Here's another philsophy: "The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy." H.L. Mencken (1880-1956) A further analysis of democracy can be read here http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/interwar/hook.htm Anyway, this leads me to think about how the way goverments limit the freedom of knowledge. For example, Communist China limits the freedom of speech and controls the media. Bipartisan U.S. limits knowledge as well, such as taking funds from stem cell research. These governments fear that if the people gain new knowledge, they may be destructive to the society. In other words, new knowledge can be good or bad to the society, but the government is conservative and choose to have no knowledge at all. If you know me, I am a progressive person and a fan of education. I believe that fear of knowledge is despitable, and simply further knowledge is needed to differeniate the good and bad use of knowledge. Along the thinking of Mr. Mencken, I can say "The cure for the fear of knowledge is more knowledge" This should be applied more often to government policy planning. |
