update only two weeks behind... not too shabby!

so the reason i was in tokyo the other week was because... i climbed mount fuji!! and it was motherf-ing hard. luckily, the weather was great and i had a fantastic climbing partner.

tradition is that you climb the mountain at night and then watch the sunrise from the top, so that's what we did. thursday night, we get to the mountain and its already pitch black dark. we didn't see anyone for the first 3 hours and we weren't even sure if we were taking the right path. i have to admit, it was pretty freaky/scary at first. [official climbing season is july & august. we came early to beat the crowds, which is good. downside is that it's pretty deserted] about 3 hours into the climb, we rested at a hut for an hour, and then continued on our way. or, as i remember it, we started a climb that felt like eternity, and then some.

the really cool part about the experience was that we basically had the mountain to ourselves. that's what it felt like anyway. the only people we ran into the entire time (total time was over 12 hrs) were the people at the hut, and a handful of other climbers. being alone on a very big mountain makes you feel really little- its a really interesting thing to experience.

the crappy part was the actual climb. my body definitely wasn't prepared for the ascention and i kindly donated an onigiri and whatever water i had in me to the mountain (over the cliff outside our hut to be exact). plus, after the first few hours, i had walked over enough volcanic leftovers and loose rocks to last me a lifetime.

anyway, the torture and neverending zigzags payed off when we saw the sun rise around 4:30. it was beautiful. there's something so serene and calming about watching the sun rise with clouds below you and clouds above you. we really couldn't have picked better weather conditions. the view from the summit was pretty great, too. the crater at the top was still enveloped in snow and it really showed what a different world the top is from the world at the bottom.

the rest of the weekend was spent onsening, exploring kamakura with our new stranger-friend, eating gobs of food, and window shopping in ginza. good times.

the experience was a test on so many levels - physically, mentally... and a very humbling experience. i'm really glad i did it (def ranks up there in my "favorite things i did in japan" folder) but there is no way that i would ever EVER do it again. anyone who has climbed mt fuji knows exactly what i'm talking about. m(^_^)m

HAPPY (BELATED) BDAY JOE! I WAS CLIMBING A BIG MTN ON YOUR BIRTHDAY TO CELEBRATE YOUR SPECIAL DAY. YAY!  <3

i'm off to tokyo again tomorrow! we've got big plans... hopefully i'll come back with some good updates. i read an article today about how tokyo is the most expensive city in the world, again. d'oh! click here to see what other cities made the list.

in other news, the girls and i picked up our mikimoto pearls on saturday. they're beyoootiful and stunning. i wasn't surprised to learn that mikimoto makes the miss universe crown. frickin bling bling! you'll also remember seeing mikimoto being featured in an episode of ANTM season 3 (the one where the girls are in tokyo and eva and ann go to the mikimoto store and get to take home a pearl necklace. damn i love that show).

lately, i've been a bit consumed by packing and getting things in order before i leave. but, i've realized that as things are coming together, there is still so much more to look forward to. there definitely is a silver lining in this cloud...
