| Camera collectingI think I want to collect antique digital cameras when I grow up. I always was confused by the appeal of "collecting" things - stamps and trading cards are useless, and what's the appeal in an old piece of technology that's completely obsolete?
But then again, there's something about digital cameras - there are just some specimens out there that seem to be masterful pieces of engineering.
To start out, my hall-of-fame list of cameras to collect:
Fujifilm F30: Was and still is the best high-ISO compact of all time (if you count it in the same family as the F31fd, which had slightly better processing). It's out of production and it doesn't look like Fujifilm is ever going to go back to this route, so this one's a keeper. Good thing I already have it!
Panasonic LX3: This looks like the camera where Panasonic finally gets everything right. The high-ISO noise is about industry average or even better now, and it sets itself apart from the other compacts on the market - 24mm wide-angle, RAW, hotshoe, and f2.0-2.8 lens. It's $500 now, and the LX2 has just dropped to $375, so if anything I'll have to pick these up on the used market (since I don't expect myself to be rich enough to throw down a half grand on a paperweight anytime in the next 1-2 years).
Canon 5D: I'll probably pick one of these up used 5 years from now when they're in the $500 range. Probably more for sentimental reasons than anything (hard to believe it, but this is the camera I've had for the longest - the Rebel XT lasted about 5 months, and the 20D about 7 - it's been about 12 months right now with the 5D). If I stick around with Canon I guess there's really no reason to have this since it'll be obsolete (well, maybe for a cheap backup body), but if I go to Nikon (highly likely within a year) I guess it'll be nice to have something to remind me of the Canon days. | | |
| Booh, everyone gets to watch the Olympics but me.
