True Colors

Why I want to be a Calvinist:
I fully submit to the idea of God’s Sovereignty and His Grace
There are strong Calvinist voices at my church who appear more certain of their doctrine and that appeals to my militant side.

Why I don’t want to be a Calvinist:
The majority of the Calvinists I have met/heard sound very arrogant. (This is ironic since they hold very dearly how God reigns supreme and we should be humbled by that.)
The Dutch Reformed Church (a bastion of Calvinism) in South Africa twisted basic doctrine about predestination into a policy that was the root of apartheid.

Why I want be an Arminianst:
The majority of Arminianists that I have met/heard, like this guy, are gracious, humble and genuine people…people I would rather mimic.
I think Arminianists place more emphasis on God’s abundant love and that’s a little more attractive to my fluffy side.

Why I don’t want to be an Arminianist:
I would probably be labeled a heretic and not allowed to teach at my church.
I hold to the perseverance of the saints dearly.

So the truth is, I would rather not frame my theology in terms of an “-ism” but if pressed, I am probably a closet Calvinist who wished he were an Arminianist. Those are my true colors.

Saturday
This Saturday, at Home of Christians on Hacienda Blvd., there will be a fundraiser called Project Poverty.  We will be raising money for various organizations and raising awareness about poverty in our world.   I'm stumping for kiva.org and Open Doors USA.

Almost being considered a "four-point" Calvinist, I agree that Calvinist can seem arrogant. I believe the view should make people exhibit much more grace than anything because Calvinism depends heavily on the basis of grace. So I am in agreement with you on that part. But one should carefully discern whether the "arrogance" might actually be the heavy conviction of the view on the person's heart. It is like me finding a fountain of youth that I want to share with you, but my excitement might seem like arrogant enthusiasm since it is hard to believe in a fountain of youth.

I cannot speak from the Arminianst point of view. I do appreciate your transparency.

i also felt pretty bad for nowitzki. he'll be blamed for the loss even though he wasn't the only one not sinking shots. i don't feel bad for mark cuban, though. that guy is a big baby.

bschool is an option. it's either that or a masters in public health. i've heard good things about both.

i think calvinism (and christianity, too) are easily perceived as arrogant because they hold up narrow and mutually exclusive ideas. i agree with jon about the heavy conviction thing.

As the Token Five Point Calvinist freak among us on staff, haha, i have to agree you with Lix. Calvinism can easily lead to pride, when our theology overshadows the root of Reformed Theology, which is the Sovereign Grace that demands our humility. The Arminian dude you refer to on your post, pastors a church that my dear friend attends up north. I too upon talking with this man, and reading about his ministry see that he is truly Christ-like. I have mentioned so many times to my friend that I love her pastor and that I would love to work under him. I even joked that if Michelle needs a material engineering job in silicon valley, I wouldn't mind going up to sit under this man and his teaching, simply because He Loves Jesus and He loves leading people to Jesus so much more than He loves himself. I don't see him as an "ism" or a non "ism" I see him as a Christ-like brother, just like you. I love you, and I appreciate your post, you closet 5 pointer! haha.

Interesting!
but perhaps we cannot found our understanding of God on the basis of the the character of people that believe certain doctrines, but rather on the objective truth of scripture.  I hope all is well with you.
