  • Drew Laird

I found out this morning that a college friend went home to be with the Lord.

He was swimming laps at a pool in the gym and the employees found him floating.  They were unable to revive him.

    Here are a few articles:

Drew was the younger brother of a good friend of mine--Bret Laird.  Both of these men and their wives were incredible examples of transformed lives. We spent many Friday nights going down to 3rd Street in Santa Monica to share the gospel.  The Laird family certainly made an impact on my life as they lived out their lives for the Lord.

I know that Drew will be greatly missed, but so great to know he is in the presence of the Creator.  Please pray for his wife, Natalie, who has gone into labor after hearing the news. (She is only 6 months pregnant.)  Please pray also for Drew's older brothers, Bret and Chad and their families as they mourn the sudden, unexpected loss of Drew.

  • NO SCAR?

In the midst of preparations for our Japan Team, reading a newsletter for missions in GraceLife, ESL to the Monks, I have been reminded of the cost of following Christ.  It is not without cost that the Gospel is proclaimed--not without much sacrifice and selflessness.  Am I better than Christ?  The One who knows suffering far more than I ever will.  The one who understands sacrifice and living for the eternal Glory of God more than my mind will ever comprehend.  If my life is so easy, have I really understood what it means to live for Christ? Lord, help me to follow hard after You.

    NO SCAR?

    Hast thou no scar?
No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand?
    I hear thee sung as mighty in the land;
I hear them hail thy bright, ascendant star.
    Hast thou no scar?

    Hast thou no wound?
Yet I was wounded by the archers; spent,
Leaned Me against a tree to die; and rent
By ravening beasts that compassed Me, I swooned.
    Hast thou no wound?

    No wound? No scar?
Yet, as the Master shall the servant be,
And piercèd are the feet that follow Me.
But thine are whole; can he have followed far
Who hast no wound or scar?

  • When It's All Been Said and Done

    Today I remembered my grandpa.

He was a constant encouragement to me...always encouraging me to think upon the Lord and on what is true.

    Sometimes life is hard.

Here are the lyrics to a song he sent to me while I lived in India:

When it's all been said and done

There is just one thing that matters

Did I do my best to live for truth

Did I live my life for You

When it's all been said and done

All my treasures will mean nothing

Only what I've done for love's Reward

Will stand the test of time

Lord Your mercy is so great

That You look beyond our Weakness

And find purest gold in miry clay

    Making sinners into saints

I will always sing Your praise

Here on earth and ever after

For You've shown me Heaven's my True home

When it's all been said and done

You're my life when life is gone

Lord I'll live my life for You

And then I remember what life is about.

Thanks, Grandpa!  I know you are enjoying singing with the angels!

  • Where is your treasure?

So many things here on earth compete for my attention.  I read this this morning and was reminded of what is true.

    Where is your treasure?

(Matthew Mead, "A Name in Heaven, the Truest
     Ground of Joy")

This is the counsel of the blessed Jesus—"Lay up
for yourselves treasures in heaven!" Matthew 6:20

The treasures of most men are perishing, earthly
    treasures; cankered and moth-eaten treasures;
    treasures of vanity!

    Where is your treasure?

Is it in this world—or in the eternal world?

Is it in present vanities—or in future glory?

Is it in present contentments—or in an
    everlasting inheritance?

Is it in food and feasting—or is it in the
    light of God's countenance?

Is it in profits, pleasures, and honors
—or is it in grace and glory?

    "Where your treasure is—there your
heart will be also." Luke 12:34
