TOM Fest 08

Last weekend I went to TOM Fest, a multi-day Christian music festival north of Portland, Oregon. I was only able to make the last day of it, but was not dissapointed with the range and depth of musical talent on display. Admitedly, there was some talent on display which I would prefer to not have seen, but that's how music festivals go. At any rate, here's a rundown of some of my faves from the day.

The Martyrs

The Martyrs I had never heard of them before, but was real impressed with their brand of punk. It wasn't so much that their music was extra special, but the vocalist has a voice that's nice and gravelly and shouty and sounds real good.

Brian Hanover

Brian Hanover Had I recognized the name, I would have been there for his entire set. This is the lead singer and guitarist for the Hanover Saints. I wandered by and heard him playing Masquerade, and then realized who it was that was playing it. I caught his last 2 songs, and my greatest dissapointment on the day was in not being able to hear his entire set. Ah well. I chatted with him briefly after the set and bought 2 cds that I didn't even know existed. Yeehaw!

Behold

Behold Another band I had never heard of. The guitarist on the far right is the guitarist/vocalist for Thee Letting Forth of Fire, itself a heavy band. But Behold...WOW! They brought it! Very very heavy sonically. A treat for the uninitiated!

Thee Letting Forth of Fire

Thee Letting Forth of Fire I've seen them three times at TOM Fest, and I like them better each time I see them. This time they played one song. That lasted for 25 minutes. It was with irony that fans called out "one more song!" after they finished.

Thee Letting Forth of Fire - vocalist

Thee Letting Forth of Fire - Guitarist and Vocalist He looks suspiciously like YourOuterCritic. I'm onto your secret, YOC!

Underneath the Gun

Underneath the Gun I had heard the name, but for some reason thought they were a wuss-rock band. Was I ever surprised! The Gun definitely riled the crowd with their brand of crushing metal. And I love the Jesus Saves tee the bass player is wearing.

Mychildren Mybride

MyChildren, MyBride If I was in front of the stage, maybe I could have got spat on too.

I was actually dissapointed with this band. Based on their music that I've heard I was expecting great things. Maybe my expectations were too high, but they were mediocre on stage. Good, but not great. Of course it probably didn't help that I had already heard several great metal bands that day that were hard to top.

MxPx - Mike

MxPx - Mike The headliner for the day, there was huge anticipation from the crowds and the other bands there at TOM Fest for the one and only Magnified Plaid. Now, I will admit that my history with MaxPax is somewhat rocky, because for the first 5 years after I first heard them, I was definitely not a fan. It's only been within the last 5 years that I've begun to enjoy their music, and really only the last couple that I can honestly say I like their music. Call it music snobbery, but I've had a hard time getting past their formulaic pop-punk. Of course, what punk isn't formulaic...

That said, I was super impressed with MxPx. Not only did they play with energy and 'conviction', but Mike is the real-deal frontman: totally at ease on stage, and knows how to play to the crowd. The band played tight and never got sloppy. Their show was a fitting highlight to a day filled with quality hard Christian music.

So what did I miss the other two days? It pains me to have missed these: Joy Electric, Ohm's Law, Isopod, and a Tragedy Ann reuinion concert. I undoubtedly missed a bunch of other unknown-to-me bands as well. Ah well, maybe next year.

The Oregon Coast: The Coast with the Most

I took a trip this past week. It was only a few days, but it was nice and relaxing. Here are some pictures I took to share with all y'all. Actually, I took them for myself, but I thought I'd share anyway. Cuz I'm that kind of guy. Don't believe me? Check out my profile pic.

bridge2  Bridge Over the... Yaquina Bay.

jetty2 Return of the Jetty

anenome2 Anemones of the State

sunset rays2 Catching Some Rays. Note how I was too lazy to walk to the edge of the parking lot to take the picture.

Speculation may abound: is it a giant owl with laser eyes? The sun burning through the last of the ozone layer? Space creatures earth-probing? The return of Jesus? Skeptics theorize, but who really knows???

I'm pretty sure it isn't the return of Christ though.

The Anti Tryst Advises: Credit Problems

DEAR THE ANTI TRYST: I'm a 21-year-old college student. My problem is, I have no credit. My family was always adamant about my not getting a credit card because they were afraid I'd go overboard. However, I'm always careful with my money. My worry now is that I won't be able to buy a home in the future because I won't be able to get a loan due to lack of credit. Signed, Penniless Pauper

THE ANTI TRYST ADVISES: Your problem is that you don't pay attention to the news. Look around you! Houses aren't selling anymore, and many a folk's credit is shot. Thank your parents for not letting you have a credit card. Now you get a fresh start, while everyone elses credit is much lower than your SAT score obviously was. Your parents were right for not letting you get a credit card -- you can't handle it!

Mad-Sense

Just for kicks I was checking out this blog on the public view -- the view that all y'all see, and the one that I never do. On the left hand side there is a Google Ad box, with ads relating at least somewhat to the contents of my blog. I'm not sure if these five ads are the same every time you view my blog, or if they change with every page refresh. Of the five ads that were there when I checked the public view, four were very appropriate in that they related to music and Christianity.

But the fifth? The fifth advertised "sexy pictures of Br***ey Sp***s."

What in the world? What did I do to deserve that??? I'm pretty sure that none of my blog entries should have attracted that kind of ad. Ah well, such is life among us non-Primo people.

The Anti Tryst Reviews: Seventh Star - The Undisputed Truth

Wow!

In a metal world that thumbs its finicky nose at modern hardcore, Seventh Star unleashes a pure, unapologetic hardcore album. Not only does Seventh Star 'bring it', but they one-up themselves over their last stellar album, Brood of Vipers. The Star experiments with some new styles a bit (most notably with vocals - guests and backup vox), and their riffs are of a new ilk, but they stay true to their hardcore roots. And how!

I can't quite decide which is more impressive: the music, or the lyrics, both of which are in-your-face, smashmouth, I-dare-you-to-pretend-you-like-us.

Instant classic: Track # 5: Isaiah Six  (With Dan Quiggle of xDisciplex AD/Jesus Wept fame guesting for an awesome one-two vocal punch)

Check out their merch link to pick up some inexpensive music and their DVD, and support a straight-up Christian hardcore band and label. Yeehaw!
