Dust!

The room is still.  We sit quietly, mustering our dignity, hands folded, the occasional leg crossed, a head perched on crooked elbow.  One time Katelyn gave Kyle head at the back of a movie theater when they were in love just before the part where Tom Hanks loses Wilson but then they broke up so now they sit on opposites sides of the aisle.  We're waiting for a prayer to start or stop, I can't quite tell.  The new girl Catrina, I think she's after James but doesn't realize that he used to be with her Bible study leader Kate until the night he got drunk with Lauren and put some fingers in her.  She's with Kyle now, Lauren is, which is awkward because the three of them play on the worship team together every second Sunday and James is a terrible bass player.  The room is stagnate, flakes of dead skin floating indolent through the air.  The filth coats our lungs, chokes our breath; the ways we've tried each other on, lewd fantasies of marriage and depraved sex, the times we were caught, the times we weren't, apologies and alter calls, dozens of stories our children will never suspect.  Heads bowed, hands up:  We surrender!  Ashes and ashes and dust.

Ahhh, the outcome of the dream of the free-love movement. A nightmare. Something that is a gift turns into playing against and using each other, something we have to earn with competition, wit, or steal with roofies, lies, or whatever is handy, or it becomes a place of shame or a power struggle, or a casual, distant, calloused physical act, instead of a vulnerable moment of bodily, emotional, and spiritual act of acceptance.

Sometimes I forget that church has little to do with music and messages and a lot to do with confession, sanctification, forgiveness, repentance and fellowship.
