SPECIAL ENTRY - The 2006 Summer Jam Competition!

Okay, kids... here's the score.  I find new music almost exclusively by what I see my friends listening to, what they tell me is good, etc.  Now that summer is here, it's time for me to make a new Mix CD to play as I drive.  Instead of just putting a bunch of stuff I already know in there, I've decided to open it up to everyone that reads this blog.  Therefore, may I announce:

THE 2006 SUMMER JAM COMPETITION!

The rules are simple: just post a response to this entry with TWO SONGS that you think should go on the summer jam album.  After the contest period is over, I'll assemble a mix CD with all of the suggestions in a random order, and after listening for a while, I'll announce what song will be the official 2006 Summer Jam (in my estimation, at least).

Criteria for entries:

-         Songs can be from any era, past or present.

-         Songs can be in any style – from J-Pop to Classical, it’s your choice.

-         Please include the artist who performs the song.  Covers are fine, but make sure you include which person is performing the version you wish to enter.

-         The song must be available for download online, either through iTunes Music Store, the artist’s website, or less than legal means.  If you know where the song can be found, please include that in your entry.

-         Show your taste!  Include the songs you like, not just ones you think I would like or “joke songs” just so I’ll have to listen to them.  Throw in a song from your favorite band.  You have two entries, so use them to spread the music you love.

The contest will run until June 20th, so you have plenty of time to add your entries.  Let the competition begin!

-Adam

This is not in order of preference:
"Better than Wine" by Derek Webb on the Album: I See Things Upside Down.
This is a great love song, one of the best I've heard. Great for a warm summer's night.

"On A Night That Felt Outdated" by Waterdeep on the Album: To Chase Away the Birds.
This is a longer (i.e. about 7 or 8 min) song of reflection. Acoustic driven and quite profound when you listen to the lyrics, chronicalling the lives of a couple people in broken situations.

There you go, take a listen and let me know what you think. If you can't find them on i-tunes I could just give them to you.

Track one: Transatlanticism by Death Cab For Cutie.  Off of the aptly named album....Transatlanticism.   Look it up.

Track two: Army From the Ben Folds LIVE cd.  Explicit lyrics.  Don't think it matters in this one, but don't bother with the watered-down crap.
Army is a great song, but the audience participation is what makes this version rad.

Yes, rad.

"How to Save a Life" by The Fray...pretty much anything by The Fray..... Honestly, I find most of my new music lately compliments of Scrubs; part of why I love that show so much is the music is generally from unheard-of artists, and becomes another character on the show. Thisis a music guide for the show.

Miss you, and hope you're doing well.

Props to Dehmer for the Death Cab for Cutie shout out.

Oh, and my second song would probably be Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".

2 songs?  Just two songs?

Unfair.  I think my brain might explode trying to give you just two summer jams...

1.  "Summertime" - a cover of the Gershwin classic done by Me First and the Gimme-Gimmes

2.  "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"  -  most preferable version is from the tribute album called "Burning For Buddy" (Vol. 1).  It is track two.  If you cannot find this version.  Please get back to me, and I will suggest an alternate song...

Yeah, so you drove me a little nutty with this whole thing as I pulled 14 brain muscles trying to discover what my two favorite songs are.  Yeah, I know, I know,I was supposed to get my two favorite summer songs, but I can't decipher songs seasonly (if a song works in January, it doesn't work any better in July, for me anyway).  I eventually decided that I should only use songs off my record collection because you were less likely to know something from there than off of my rapidly approaching 300 plus CD collection that you were priveledged enough (that's not arrogance, that's sophistication...by the way) to hear in one of our many car expeditions.  So I'm left with around 80 or so circular pieces of vinyl and that's when I went really nuts..."Okay, got to have a Specials song...holy crap, what's my favorite Specials song? can't decide...Clash...need the Clash, but how can I have the Clash without my favorite punk band, the Buzzcocks...and Madness...got to have Madness...and...and...The Skatalites!  and "Waitin for the end of the World" by Elvis Costello and the Waitresses, and the B-52s and the Beat and The Selector and OP IVY and Common Rider!!!!!!...?????!"  I then died, but fortunately it was an alternate universe MattNash that died and I'm (mattnash) okay.  From now on you'll be able to differintiate from this reality's mattnash and the alternate reality MattNash because of the capitalization, also in the alternate reality, Bishop came back in time and killed Derek Jeter to prevent this (our) reality.  Our reality is actually the screwed up one.  DO I GET A NO-PRIZE!  I deserve a no-prize for that.  Please...signed Chris Bachalo art featuring Psylocke...please...please...make mine Marvel...please...

Okay, so this past week was difficult for a number of reasons, but I have given up and am just giving you the two songs I have been listening to the most lately.  Sorry, your mission was too great and I can't take this anymore.  So, without further ado, I give you the ANTI-SUMMER JAMS!

1.  The Slackers "Rider" off the album "Peculiar".  The Slackers should need no explanation.  I listened to this song for 46 hours straight a few months back.

2. Be Your Own Pet "Fire Department" off the E.P. "Summer Sensation" (I think the E.P. title's sarcastic)  Yes, this is off an E.P., not an album, but you should still be able to find it.  Their debut album comes out soon, but I don't think this song is on the album.  You can try buy.com if Itunes doesn't have it.  I hate iTunes by the way.  I had to wait forever to download the thing and then they don't have any imports or hard to find stuff on there.  It's just all stuff you can get at Best Buy.  I got really excited one day because I had the thought of buying some import stuff (Lady Sovereign [ENG], Goldenhorse [AUS] and Ketchup Mania [JAP] ) off of iTunes, rather than spending $30-40 each to import them and iTunes apparently has no imports and they suck and apple sucks and I'm bitter and I don't understand the point or need of itunes.  At least it doesn't help me any, so...yeah, useless.

self-proclaimed Anti-Summer Jam winner,

mattnash

Well, I've given it a lot of thought over the past few days...I must whole heartedly recommend:

Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny by Lemon Demon

They haven't released it on CD, but you can see the "video" here if you haven't already. http://www.ultimateshowdown.org/
