Are You The Same In Person As You Are On Xanga

This wasn't the next thing I was going to post about, but I've had things happen on here that have gotten me to thinking about it.My last xanga I had that I shut down about a year ago, some people that know me personally said my writing and commenting didn't really sound like me. I wonder how many people really act totally different on xanga than they do in person.I for one really am shy and not that talkative, unless it's someone I know really well and even then it usually has to be a topic I'm passionate about. Weither it's posting and commenting on xanga or chatting on AIM, I guess I feel like I can be the person I WANT to act like but too shy to be in person with people I don't know. Also I'm a slow thinker myself, so writing on xanga and commenting or even chatting on AIM make it easier to say what I want to say because I have more time to think instead of one on one in person where when talking and the moment to say something slips away before you can say what you wanted to say. Is anyone else that way or am I the only one. Then there are these people that are rude, crude, mean and just plain obnoxious on here. Is that how they are in person or is that just how they want to be but hide it in person? I guess some are just like that PERIOD.

I heard a country song a while back I hadn't ever heard and haven't heard it since, but I think it was Brad Paisley it was something like "I'm Cool On The Internet" Don't know if thats the name of the song, but it made me laugh and made me think how true that is in a lot of folks minds when they are on here. Anyway, a lot of you may think I'm an outgoing guy and maybe even funny to be around, but really you would find me pretty boring (ask my wife)  Well, this was just something I wondered about and if anybody else ever thought "Is this how I act in person" and is this how I want people to think I act like? Just some thoughts, what do you all think? Do you act the same way on xanga as you do in person?  Have a great weekend friends! God bless you all!

I think that I am pretty much the same. I bet if you polled my readers who have met me, they'd say that I was.

people are rude on the internet because the internet gives the illusion of intimacy when, really, there is none....they are comfortable being ugly and mean because there is no cost and they can get away with it...i believe it is how they are deep down inside, but don't show in person because people would call them on it in person (and rightly so)...i act the same (ask okiepugs) and i assure you, so does she...as for others, i don't know them well enough to say....

Hi Gene,

These are some good thoughts. I know often people are more comfortable with the written word and the freedom that comes with it. They feel the protection of time and space. This is not me...

I think if you spoke to those who have met me or knew me before xanga they will tell you that I am about the same here or in person. My writing might come across a bit more correct and with a much less southern twang than I have, but as for the person, I am the same. I am easy to talk to and outgoing. I would hug you when I saw you or when we left, and I do smile and laugh easy. I also am a Christian in whatever I do. Not always perfect, far from that but I do try to live a life pleasing to God. My home is just that a home. Its nothing of show, very lived in and you would find kids and dogs laying on the floor (along with a few pair of shoes and possibly laundry sorted and waiting its turn in the washing machine) I love my family and if you find me you will also find them, We are together most of the time.

So I do know what you are saying here, but I think I live pretty true to the person I am on xanga.

I honestly have no clue!  I like to think I'm pretty much the same, but you'll have to ask my friends that know me in person.  Haha!

Well, you've already got my take from Tia, and yes, she is exactly the same in person as well as me.  We are the "what you see is what you get" variety and that's that.  I'm not an extrovert by any means, but really not an introvert either.  I can be rather quiet in groups, except when my work is involved and I have to be the voice.  I don't like to admit it, but in the line of work I do, I am sometimes "they heavy" and usually do manage to get my way......... but my way is usually because of some statute or Board rule, not something I made up just to be a ruler, my job is to make people follow the law.  That has taught me, in some ways, how to deal with others in my private life as well, and Tia know's, and I know about her, I don't shove around easily and do stand my ground.  I think I am a likable person, I'm honest, I love the Lord with all my heart, and I'm faithful, but also pretty set in my ways.

that song is called "I'm so much cooler online"

I think I pretty much act the same.  I am outgoing in person, but I get my energy from being alone.  I am not quick with the mouth, and I do better expressing my thoughts online or in letters because I can edit everything before I submit it.  there's no submit button on my mouth, and I can't see what I say before I say it.

Like the song!

Everything you said about yourself is basically everything I am.
I think too much when I talk in person, and it's really difficult to find the right thing to say.
Being online, things are so much easier, thanks to that wonderful backspace button. (I even hate talking on the phone!)
I've been trying to work on talking in person though, it just takes a lot effort on my part.

I've discovered MOST people's personalities vary depending in where they are--though it may not be a huge variation. Am, I? Nope-(ask my family, friends, etc) What you see/read is what you get.  I occasionally hold a 'mask' up to protect my heart (feelings) but that is rare.  As Popeye said, "I yam, who I yam". LOL But, as I said, I am in a very small minority.

Over the years I've met in person quite a number of people I've met online. It always surprises me when they say "Hey, you're just like you are when we chat"....DUH!...I can't imagine being anyone other than who I am. The pretense woyuld be too difficult to keep straight I think....

Having said that I will also say that a percentage of people I've met fell into this portion of the song you mentioned:

When you've got my kind of stats
It's hard to get a date
Let alone a real girlfriend
But I grow another foot and lose a bunch of weight
Every time I log in.

I've often wondered if people really think you won't notice they look nothing like the pictures you've seen of them!

@cowboy_christian - I shoulda known you would know the name of that song Cowboy! I knew it was something like that. Can't believe I only heard it the one time and I think it was on a TV special. I really don't listen to much radio, mostly my CD's in the car while I'm working.

@TeacherPerson - I'm pretty much the same too really, just in person the shyness takes over sometimes, I don't think the shyness bothers me here in the least!

@tialoca13 - A lot of truth to what you say there Lisa!

@firefighterswife - Never doubted for a minute that your are like that, very easy to see that in you Candy. You have such a sweet spirit!

@My_Protected_Blog - Shorty, you are a hoot, I just KNOW you are. Who wouldn't enjoy your company!

@okiepugs - Talking to you on AIM I can tell you are exactly who your are Sharron, an extremely caring person who wants the best for everyone.

@Longtalks_and_tearyeyes - Katy, it is heard to talk one on one for me most of the time. My biggest fear with my shyness is that some might look at it as snobish. Not the case at all. From what I read on your posts and the one time we've chatted on AIM, I can tell you have a heart of gold and God is going to use you in an incredible way, just wait and see.

@roughstring414 - Oh boy, you started something now POPEYE!!!!!!! Ha! I love it. Don't be surprised if I don't start calling you Popeye sometimes I'll bet you ARE exactly the same in person as you are online. I'll bet shy isn't in your vocabulary E. And what an incredible heart you have for other's too. There are trully some people on here with wonderful gifts that God uses for His Glory. Just AWESOME!

@Willowlost - I would pretty much bet (if I was a betting man) that pretty much everyone I'm subscribed to are just like they are in person as how they are on Xanga. If I subscribe to someone it's because I feel they are genuine! I usually wait for someone to subscribe to me first though. I'll bet you are a joy to be around Sarah! I can just tell!

@UnworthyofHisgrace - Shy? Stephen laughed at that--he can look the word up for me. LOL. I'm reallly glad I'm getting to know you better though.  You really are such a sweet guy with a gentle spirit and kind heart.  I KNOW you are the same in person.

I am pretty much the same person.  I try hard to be me because I don't want to appear false.  After all, no matter what we put out there in cyberspace, Jesus knows who we are.

I have a article I want you to read.  Go to espn.com and type in Chris Lofton.  He is such an awesome young man.  The kids here love him and now they have something else to look up to him for.  His parents are great people too.

@MRCDM - Yup Mr C, you and me both are the COOLEST old men on the net...RIGHT!!!!!

@jrfriend - I saw in the paper about him have a heart problem or something or some treatment he went thru that probably affected his playing this past season. I'll check it out. He does seem like an awesome young man. And you are soooo right, Jesus knows who we are WHEREVER we are.

@roughstring414 - Hey Popeye! I'm glad we're getting to know each other better to, after all, that first comment I made to you was rather embarassing on my part   I had just started going to Cowboys site and gotten into a discussion with he and Stephen about predestination and you introduced yourself as wolftrax's wife  and I for some BRAINDEAD reason called you Cowboys wife in my comment...REMEMBER!!! ****face turns red****  What a first impression!

Random props:  The whole "why some people are mean online" thing asside, I agree often writing allows us the time to sort through our thoughts and convey more accurately what we want to say than a verbal conversation, so it obviously could alow you to see another side to people because of that.  But vise versa is true I believe as well.  There are some aspects of a personality, you just simply can not convey through the written word.  Both foms of communication could help reaveal things about a person the other can not.

@UnworthyofHisgrace -LOL.  It was an honest mistake anyway...at least I LIKE cowboys, cowgirl hats, boots, horses, etc.  It obvisously wasn't too bad of a first impression as we became friends pretty quickly.  Hope you are feeling better and getting some rest.

Hope you are well, Gene. I'll give you a call one of these days. Blessings to you for a great week.

Yeah, the song is called, "Online".  I think it's hillarious.  And a good illustration of your point.   Can we sinful creatures ever be TOTALLY ourselves???

Thank you for your comment, Grampy and for thinking about our concert!  It went really well!!!  Thank you for your prayers!  This trip to NC is teaching me so much, I'm looking forward to writing a post about it!   Blessings!
