Best of 2007!

At the beginning of every year, I poke my head out of the cave I live in and give you my opinion on the best things of the year. I quite honestly had no idea some of you were looking forward to this! Thanks to everyone who believed in me this year, and a special no-thanks to all the people who gave up on our dreams. Of course, life is good, and so was last year! Here’s why:

2007 was the year of big changes:
1. Dewoh.com, my new online multimedia company, replaced Brilliant Studios to great success. To this day we are growing in numbers and fans! Much thanks to Colby, Colton, Lukas, Matthew, Whitney, Kathleen and especially Sarah for your support in this extremely stressful and tedious endeavor! Maybe this one will catch on!
2. I moved out on my own, which is a big but much loved change.
3. Sarah and I are no longer just dating! I proposed and we are getting married May 23rd!
4. Some changes are bittersweet though: I stopped going to GroundZero church, disowned a good friend for their disloyalty, laziness, and general lack of respect for my future wife, and grew up a little more than I thought I would.

Things that I am looking forward to in 2008:
1. Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince
2. Getting married and living with Sarah forever
3. The Rise of Dewoh
4. Sarah finishing her book

2006 The Year in Review

Direct from my blog: sethnieman.com (where you can catch all of my daily updates)

I know that it was long awaited, but I’ve been busy, so that’s my excuse! But this is going to be a good post because not only is it the new year, it’s also going to show (in my opinion) the best things of the year.  Enjoy!

2006 was a good year for my blog:
  • I posted over 300 items
  • I had over 20,000 visits
  • It got me kicked out of a church
  • It got picked up on Technorati
  • It got its own domain name
  • It got a custom redesign
2006 was a good year for my personal growth:
  • I learned how to write correctly
  • I got much better at my job, hobbies, and lifestyles
  • I became good friends with Brian Foster
  • I learned to read more often
  • I became more diligent
  • I learned more patience in dealings with my girlfriend Sarah
2006 was a good year for music (my personal top 5):

1. mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister
Way back in my "Best of 2004" mewithoutYou topped the list for best album of the year. As you can tell if you've known me very long, my musical styles have changed an awful lot over time but mewithoutYou continues to be the best band out there. They span genres (proved by the fact that I still love them when I'm not even into that kind of music anymore) like very few other bands have before, and unlike any other band they write music for each member of the band - meaning that rarely are any of the band members playing the same harmony, adding a beautiful layer of music that is missing from most albums. Notable Songs: A Glass Can Only Spill What It Contains, The Sun and the Moon, C-Minor, In a Market Dimly Lit, In a Sweater Poorly Knit
2. Beck - The Information
I actually only discovered Beck this year but loved his music right away. Beck fits my every mood - up or down - making him a constant addition to my playlist. This album features everything great about Beck music with his pop songs (Think I'm In Love), hip-hop songs (Cellphone's Dead), folk songs (No Complaints), and his acoustic masterpieces (New Round), everything screams Beck. Notable Songs: Think I'm In Love, Cellphone's Dead, New Round, Dark Star, We Dance Alone, No Complaints
3. Keane - Under the Iron Sea
Writing a 13 song album follow-up to an award winning previous album must be difficult - it's probably more so when it's all done on tour. Keane does not disappoint with their new album all while changing the tempo and style a bit from their first release. Those expecting piano need not worry though, there is still plenty of that around (Hamburg Song),  just not nearly as much. This album is instead full with strings, synthesizers and Tom Chaplin's signature voice. Notable Songs: Nothing In My Way, Hamburg Song, Put it Behind You, Crystal Ball, Let It Slide
4. Fair - The Best Worst-Case Scenario
When I heard that one of the people I look up to the most was joining a band I was ecstatic. Aaron Sprinkle has always delighted me with his solo albums, but in Poor Old Lu (his old band) he was in the background as the guitarist. You can imagine that when I heard he was going to be the lead in this new band it quickly became one of my most anticipated albums of the year. Luckily, their debut album did not disappoint. Catchy indie-rock that everyone can enjoy. Notable Songs: Monday, Carelessness, The Attic, Pause, Confidently Dreaming, Unglued
5. Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
Regina Spektor is a one woman band, adored by girls and secretly loved by men. Her new album brings her signature voice and quirkiness to the front lines with all new pop music (Hotel Song) and beautiful piano ballads (Samson). Notable Songs: Fidelity, Samson, On The Radio, Hotel Song, Summer in The City
Runner-Up: Lakes - The Photographs EP

2006 was a good year for movies (my personal top 5):

1. Borat!
This was easily the hardest list I've ever compiled, but this movie was very easy to make number 1. It was hilarious, immersing, and it shows our culture in a light we very rarely see. This was a great doc(just just mock)umentary.
2. A New World
Beautifully shot with very little dialogue means the movie only progresses through the characters actions. This make the movie beautiful and involving, making the audience think about what is going on.
3. Marie Antoinette
I love when people take artistic liberties with history and make it entertaining, all while keeping it surprisingly accurate. Everything about this film was great- from the art direction to the music to the costumes to the dialogue to the story. Superb.
4. Little Miss Sunshine
An original story comes along very rarely and when a original films comes along I make a point to see it. Some movies disappoint, others soar. This film flies with the best of them.
5. Déjà Vu
Movies about time travel are great. Action movies about time travel are greater. Time travel movies with a great story and a twist are greatest. This movie was not a movie that I expected to be in my top 5.
Runners-Up: Goodnight and Good Luck, Tristan and Isolde, The Lady in the Water, Monster House, Stranger Than Fiction

2006 was a good year for television (my personal top 5):

1. The Office
The show is the best, it's funny and entertaining, and it's got great characters and character development. Jim and Pam - just get together already! Man!
2. 30 Rock
A newcomer that finally got approval for a season of shows. So glad! It's hillarious.
3. House
Great story, great characters, great suspense, great humor. What more could you want?
4. South Park
The kings of Satire just had their best year ever.
5. Futurama
Yeah, it's old and there aren't going to be any new episodes until 2008, but it still stands as one of todays best TV shows.
Runners-Up: Mock, Psych

I would usually do a top books list, but because I didn't read much last year, you are just going to have to wait until the best of 2007 for my top 5 books. Come on! It's less than a year away!

Best Songs of 2006:

1.
"When You Were Young" by The Killers
2. "How to Save a Life" by The Fray
3.
"Crazy" by Gnals Barkley
4.
"Boston" by Augustana
5."Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol

Other "Bests" of 2006:

Best Video Game: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
                 Runner-Up: Wii Sports (Wii)
Best Podcast: Martin Sargent: Web Drifter
                 Runner-Up: MacBreak Weekly
Favorite Drink: Tazo Awake Tea
                 Runner-Up: Fiji brand Water

Things I'm looking foward to in 2007:

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
2. Apple Macintosh OSX 10.5 Leopard
3. Moving Out
4. The Seth and Brian Show hitting it big
5. Getting a new iPod

Things I said I was looking forward to in 2006:
Apple Intel Macs
Nintendo Revolution
The Rise of Brilliant

Two out of three ain't bad!

Well, I hope you guys enjoyed that! I'll see you on Monday when I will resume my posting of 3 or 4 things a day! Happy New Year!

Live from SethNieman.com

Because I was sick practically the entirety of this week, I decided to make this post a blogging HOOTENANNY!!!! (Just for you Brian – "It's not a hootenanny! It's an extravaganza!!") This is one of those very rare times where I post both on my blog at sethnieman.com and on my Xanga, so enjoy this killer post.

First item on the agenda: Brian. That's right, the very same Brian that comments here all the time. As you may know if you read my blog everyday, I have been looking for a replacement host for "the Seth and Matt show" just in case Matthew doesn't work out because of his life choices, so on Tuesday Brian and I did a mock podcast that none of you will ever hear, just to see how he'd do if I chose him to be my co-host. Here are some of the audio highlights. These are exclusives for you, just because I love you guys.

Clip One: Brian and I talking to Whitney

Clip Two: Brian and I having a one sided conversation with Amber

Clip Three: I discuss why the Brilliant Podcast never got popular and we sing a little  bit

Clip Four: Last commercial break and close of podcast

Did you guys enjoy those? Good!

Next order of business: a look into the future. Next year will be one of the best years ever for movies. For example, here are the some of the movies coming out next year (the linked ones go directly to their trailers).

The Bourne Ultimatum – Yes, the end of the Bourne trilogy…these movies have always been good and suspenseful

Evan Almighty – this is the sequel to Bruce Almighty and stars Steve Carrell. God contacts Congressman Evan Baxter and tells him to build an ark in preparation for a great flood. I can't wait.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – Need I say more? This is easily the best movie series of my generation and I have no reason to not think this one won't be as magnificent as the earlier movies.

Ocean's 13 – I love movies about thievery, and there aren't enough of them. Plus, Brad Pitt and George Clooney are freaking hot.Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End – We need closure! Please God, give us closure with this movie!

Ratatouille – Pixar gives us two movies in two years. This one is about a rat that lives in Paris and enjoys eating human food; in a city in which many would agree has some of the best eats in the world. Plus, Patton Oswalt voices the main character.

Reno 911! Miami – Probably the funniest live action TV show ever, now as a movie – and in Miami.

Rush Hour 3 - They're back! Jackie and Chris (Lee and Carter) are in Paris this time and are still getting mixed up in the Chinese triads.

Shrek 3 - When Fiona's dad dies Shrek is supposed to take the crown but Shrek doesn't want the responsibility. So Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Puss look for a new King. And so far King Arthur is the best they have. The fairy tale hilarity continues.

Sin City 2 – Clive Owen avenges the death of his lover, and so does Jessica Alba. Awesome.

Spider-Man 3 – chrisTopher Grace is the newest member of the Spider-Man crew and he stars as Spider-Man's nemesis, Venom. Plus Spidey gets a black suit, which is just cool.

TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) - Yes, it's CGI watch the trailer.

Blades of Glory - Sounds generic but it's got Will Ferrell in it, and Jon Header, or maybe you'd recognize those names as Ron Burgundy and Napoleon Dynamite. In 2002, two rival Olympic ice skaters were stripped of their gold medals and permanently banned from men's single competition. Presently, however, they've found a loophole that will allow them to qualify as a pairs team. Comedic Gold.

Yes, next year will be great for movies, and I cannot wait. Although I also cannot wait until tonight. Ricky-Freaking-Bobby. Of course this year I'm also looking forward to Marie Antoinette, The Fountain, Happy Feet, Barnyard (which also opened today), Accepted, Monster House (which is now playing), My Super-Ex Girlfriend (which is also now playing), and The Grudge 2 comes out in October. Of course, The new James Bond movie Casino Royale comes out in November. But in a couple weeks from now "We need to get these MF-in' snakes off of this MF-in' plane". The king of all movies. Snakes on a Plane.

Oh, and I almost forgot – Monday is the Apple WWDC, so at 12 noon, check out macrumorslive.com to see what Steve Jobs in announcing. I better save money, I have a feeling I'll be buying lots of stuff.
