My heart is sad to see your children go but I take great joy in seeing your children ready for first grade and kindergarten!

Today is Paulina and Kristin's Birthday Party! I hope that all your children can go! It should be a great time to hang out together as a class. Happy (early) Birthday Paulina and Kristin! We had a small party in our class for them today.
As you know very well next Monday June 9th, 2008 is our Kindergarten Graduation! We have been practicing so hard and we have quite the show for you! First grade has also been so kind as to perform for us! We have a half day of school on Monday so that we can prepare for the graduation. Please return to school at about 4:45 and drop your child off in the Kindergarten room so that we can get your children ready for the performance. Please give yourself lots of time to come to the graduation. Last year some students were late because of the traffic. Next week Tuesday, June 10, 2008, we have no school.

God Bless,

Miss Wunderink

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Dear Parents,

This week is our last full week of school! Next week Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday we have half days of school. So we are in the process of finishing up our units! We are finishing up our unit on Water in Science this week and our unit on People and Places in Social Studies. It feels good to finish some of our workbooks!

In phonics this week we are reviewing the ch, sh sounds and learning th and wh digraphs. Our words of the week this week are our Calendar words! They are:

Saturday

Sunday

Today

Tomorrow

Yesterday

This Friday we will be celebrating some Summer Birthdays! Sarah Hong and William Park's birthdays are in the summer (June and July) so we will have a small party at snack time for them. Next week Thursday, June 5th, we will be celebrating Kristin and Paulina's summer birthdays. They have invited the whole class to a celebration after school! I hope everyone can come!

This week Justin's family is in charge of snack. Thank you!

God Bless,

Miss Wunderink

Monday, May 19, 2008

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for your support in coming to the Field Trip on Friday! It was such a beautiful day for a picnic, a clear view of Seoul and we certainly got our exercise! It is great to enjoy Namsan as it is so close to us! I also just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your lovely Teachers Day gifts. It was such a surprise! You parents are too good to me!

We have finished our long vowel sounds so we are moving on to consonant digraphs. We will be learning about sh, and ch this week. Our words of the week are:

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

In Social Studies we have begun our unit on people around the world. Today we talked about how families are different and how families are the same from all sorts of different countries. While in Science we are continuing to learn about hte properties of water. This week we will explore surface tension. In math we are focusing on time and how to read a clock to the hour, and half hour. Try practicing this at home with your child.

Thank you all for filling out the survey about Kindergarten graduation. I appreciate your comments and feedback. I will certainly try to implement some of the things you suggested. Your answers varied so I think that graduation shall remain at 5:00pm this year according to the school calendar, so that everyone will for sure be able to come. We shall take your comments to heart for next year. I hope that this graduation will be even better than last year!

This week Friday is Justin's Birthday! So we will have a little party for him at snack time. Next week Friday we shall celebrate all the Summer birthdays! Eunice's family is in charge of snack this week. Thank you for all your help~

God Bless,

Miss Wunderink

Monday, May 12, 2008

Dear Parents,

We have a full week ahead of us! We have our Elementary Field Trip on Friday. We will be going to Namsan tower to view the cityscape of Seoul. This will tie in nicely with what we have learned in social studies about neighborhoods and communities. We will be able to see all the neighborhoods in Seoul, and there is a nice view of our school from up there. Please fill out the permission slip and send it in with your child.

This week we are finishing up our long vowel sounds by studying long-E. Our words are:

down

fall

good

laugh

run

I am starting to prepare and think about kindergarten graduation and I would appreciate some feedback. I will be sending home a small survey about kindergarten graduation. Please take a minute to fill it out and send it back to school with your child. That would be greatly appreciated!

This week Tigger's family is in charge of snack. It is already turning May this week! This year is just flying by! Since we have finished studying all of our alphabet letters we are now working on long vowel sounds. Previously, we covered long-a and long-o, so this week we are focusing on long-u (ue~blue, u_e~cute, and ew~dew). Our words of the week this week are:

every
from
giving
may
then

Please remember to practice these words at home with your children.

In science we continue our unit on plants. We learned about seeds today, and we will be discussing and sorting leaves later this week. In Social Studies we continue our unit on economics. We are focusing on how we meet our basic needs (food, clothing, shelter) and what we can do with our money (spend it, save it).

We have also started practicing for kindergarten graduation already! We are learning a special poem. I will send your child's part home sometime this week so that they can practice saying it.

Remember that this weekend will be a long weekend for us. On Friday we have a half day because of Teacher development, and Monday is Children's day! Because we have the day off on Monday we will be celebrating children's day on Tuesday next week. We will also have our Nursery Rhyme Party on Friday May 9. Please think about what costume your child will wear. I'm thinking hard about which Nursery Rhyme character I will be!

I hope your child's report cards were satisfactory. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me at 010-3043-4271 or arrange a meeting with me through Mrs. Juhn in the office.

This week Kelly's family is in charge of snack. Thank you!

God Bless,
Miss Wunderink

Monday, April 21, 2008

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a nice little break with your family. It certainly sounds like the kids had a great time. The students enjoyed sharing thier stories this morning! The Spiritual Retreat was a blessed time. It was great to get out of Seoul into the mountains, sing praises to our God, discuss the bible, and learn more about Him.

This week we are finally back to a normal schedule! We have our words of the week this week to practice with your child:

eat

please

pretty

what

where

This week's words were tricky to alphabetize because we have 2 words with 3 letters that are the same (what and where)! The words are gradually getting to be more difficult sight words.

This week in math we are learning about some new shapes! These are not just our regular triangles, and squares! We are focusing on 3D shapes. We already covered cylinders, cubes, and rectangular solids, so today we added cones, sphere's and pyramids to the list. If you have the opportunity look for these shapes while you are driving, or in the house. It is great practice to find these shapes in the everyday objects we use! We are also discussing probability, and fractions (1/2's and 1/4's).

On May 9 we shall have a Nursery Rhyme Party. We have learned a new rhyme each week in kindergarten so it is time to celebrate all the rhymes we know! The most exciting thing about this party is that we will all get to dress up like a nursery rhyme character!

Report cards should be going home very soon. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or concerns about your child's report card. My number is 010-3043-4271.

This week Paulina's family is in charge of snack. We are taking the SAT, Stanford Achievement Tests, this week. This is a comprehensive evaluation of how the students are doing in kindergarten and this will also help me to evaluate my teaching practices. We will be hopefully be receiving the results of this test in May before the end of the school year so that you can see how your child performed in comparison with students in North America. This may be a difficult week for your child because the test requires sitting quietly for long periods of time. Because of this, we have spread each test throughout the week (not in the allotted 3 1/2 day time period), so that the students will be able to perform better on their tests. Please encourage your child to try their best on these tests so that we will have an accurate reflection of their knowledge.

Just a reminder, the schedule has changed for this week as well. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be half days to accommodate the testing process.

This week William's Family is in charge of snacks. Thanks for all your help!

God Bless,

Miss Wunderink

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Dear Parents,
I hope you all had a blessed holiday with your children this week! I heard many exciting stories including two families who surprisingly shared a flight to Chicago! It is so good to take a week off and come back refreshed and ready to get back to work! The Mission Trip went very well in Malaysia. We worked with YWAM (Youth with a Mission) to spread God's love to the poor and sick. It was an eye-opening experience for many and it was amazing how much God blessed us through this trip!

Now we are off to the start of a busy week! We are studying our last letter of the alphabet this week: the letter Qu. This is very exciting because now we will be able to focus on some other elements of phonics like consonant blends, vowel blends and digraphs. This will give the students a head start for first grade! We will also continue practicing reading and writing as I see your children growing and improving every day. To celebrate the fact that we have completed the alphabet we will be having a party Friday afternoon! We will just play some games and celebrate our great achievement!

This week's Words of the Week are:
Funny
In
Is
Little
Sat
Practice these words at home with your children. Make sentences, spell them, chant, them or cheer them (you can ask your child how we do this in class :)

This week Kristin's family is in charge of snack. I hope you all have a great week!
God Bless,

Miss Wunderink

Monday, March 17, 2008

Dear Parents,

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It has certainly been a busy few weeks! Your monetary support through the Read-A-Thon has astounded me, and all your prayers have blessed me. I thank you so much! They have become so much more mature and we have grown from letter learners to sentence writers! We have been working a lot on forming sentences and making up stories and I’m so happy to say that EVERYONE is now writing sentences! We are also continuing to learn new sight words each week. This week’s words are:

For

Help

Not

Red

Yellow

We also have some exciting news as we have a new student! His name is Andrew Cho and he is working hard to learn English in our classroom. We now have 11 amazing students in our class! I sent home a snack list yesterday with some additional changes to include Andrew. This week Monica’s family is in charge of snack duty.

I hope you all have a blessed week~ and an amazing Spring Break!

God Bless,

Miss Wunderink
