Love and age disparity—what's your limit?

Almost two years ago, one of my boyfriend's friends sat him down for a serious conversation. Out of the kindness of her heart, she had decided to give him warning. Apparently, there was a beast who was coming after him—a wily and wicked woman who wanted him only for his cash and c@ck money and virility. "She's a cougar," she urged.

That was before I moved to Houston from New York City. And, up until he told me the story, I had never heard of the word cougar's colloquial use. The plethora of definitions online make me gasp and giggle. Needless to say, the allegation was false to a fault. (Pssshaw! like I needed to move across the continental United States for sex and cash—helllooooo!)

Her only basis for the biased and bludgeoning opinion was our age difference. Little did she know, the person inside the (then) 19-year-old boy's body was really a 50-something-year-old man. (In manner, mind and many other factors, he is much older than me... sometimes, but not always.) No wonder she couldn't relate to him. I snicker when I think about it now.

Celebrity couples with significant age gaps

    OLDER MAN, YOUNGER WOMAN:
  • Elvis Presley & Priscilla Presley - 10 years
  • Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie - 11 years
  • Luc Besson & Milla Jovovich - 16 years
  • Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes - 16 years
  • Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta Jones - 25 years

  • OLDER WOMAN, YOUNGER MAN:
  • Madonna & Guy Ritchie - 10 years
  • Daryl Hannah & David Blaine - 12 years
  • Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher - 15 years
  • Janice Dickinson & Tommy Fry - 19 years
  • Joan Collins & Robin Hurlstone - 25 years

How about you?

Anyway, I wanted to ask you something, and I hope you'll indulge me. You can post your answers as comments, or a message.

What was the most age difference between you and someone you've been with? How much older/younger would you go?

20 Years... I married him and had two beautiful children with him. While the marriage ended, 2 and a half years ago... it had NOTHING to do with age. It ended because of domestic violence. Follow your heart!

Most of the men I date are either a year or two younger than me, or much older, like five or six years older than me. I think that's really because I don't find many guys at my age level who I feel are mature enough. Ironically, the most mature relationships I've had are with younger men.

I think my limit would be +/- about six years.

10 years, either way. But I've had much closer and more lively relationships with younger men.

So if you're a cougar, I'm a kitten. (Apparently, that's the terminology for a younger woman who dates an older man.)

My fiance is 21 years my senior. I'd dated older men in the past, but this is by far the largest gap of all. It's all good. I'm ridiculously in love.

When I was a young lad in Germany I had a girlfriend that was twelve years older than me. We seemed to keep running into each other out on the town. She was very noteworthy and instructed me in many things that would be extremely valuable. As a young man this was the best and luckiest arrangement. I think all young men should have at least one older woman take him under her tutelage.
The youngest I have dated was a difference of sixteen years. I think I would go twenty now. In fact someone that I love very much right now and would consider partner material is twenty years younger than I. Forty is the new thirty isn't it???

Given my "young-at-heart" attitude, I was recently cautioned by a colleague not to date anyone more than five years OLDER than me -- especially if he was still young at heart. You know, men never really grow up regardless of their age.

Whatever.

So, I tend to attract guys/men that are younger. Usually by about five years. I've never dated anyone my age or older (even by a couple of years). I can't decide if this is because of who I associate with (my friends are generally younger than me in this city) or because I don't look my age.

Babbling right along... I think that age is irrelevant. If you click, you click. I do, however, have my own restrictions. I refuse to date anyone that more than 10 years older than me because he's part of my older siblings' peer group and that's just weird. (Forget that my sister married a man 22 years her senior. I just can't go there.)

Well cougar age is truly in the mind not the body. Age can be looked upon just as the same as a zodiac sign if the person can handle the relationship in the mind. You're doing just fine as you guys are. It's what works that matters...

I think about five years would be fine for me, ten maybe the maximum. But I don't think you can really tell until you fall in love. So who knows?

I seriously dated someone 10 years older, eight years younger, and the hubby is eight years older.
If he ditched me I'd be looking for someone about ten years younger than I am.
(Old men are yucky.) :D

The older I get the less relevant age seems, though, obviously (I hope) I would not date anyone below the age of consent. Personality, verve, humor, all vastly more important than age. Personal responsibility, intelligence, ethics and integrity, again significantly much more important than age. Regardless of age, anyone I date must be a genuinely extraordinary individual. I hate the term "courgar" and it galls me that someone would call you that.

Ahahahaha.... no no I would not consider myself that at all. I was just saying that I was a coarse young man and was taught some manners and taste. I also got practical lessons that only a confident older woman can deploy effectively... Just saying.
This Twentysomething girl doesn't live near me and I don't think knows how much I think of her. It is a more imagined relationship than a real one. Besides old men are yucky.

I'm one of those people who couldn't tell you your age.  Not even my closest gf.
It's all about attitude and how you conduct yourself, no?

AND ... I'm with punky on the cougar thing.  I HATE that term.  Blech.

8 years - with my husband who's older.  Despite our rough bit a few years back, it's been wonderful.

I either go bit younger or much older.

Guys my own age annoy me for some reason. It mostly has to do with maturity, and where they're at in their lives.

There was only once where I dated something older. I was 17, he was 22. But I have no idea why, I've always fallen for the younger ones... just a few years younger, the msot difference being 5 years (or I would get arrested!)

Only recently did I start dating someone 4 months older. Woah (perhaps I'm destined to cradle snatch later in life)

Huh... let's see. Eleven years, I think. I've never really thought about age factors, to be honest. So I'm not sure I really have a limit. Not that it would be relevant anymore.

Thanks for the congrats. I'm sure your writing would be quite successful. I understand what it is to be busy, though. Hope all is still groovy for you and the P factor. Much love, sweetie!

I've dated 15 years older, and my boy is 14 years younger. I find as I get more into my 30's, that upper end (used to be +20) is sliding closer to my age. To wwwCarey's point .... old men are yucky.

All that being said ... it so depends on the person I'm dating!
