During the Elizabethan Era, The Renaissance of new thinking and ideas was in it's early ages. It was also the age of Nostradamus, Marsilio Ficino and Trithemius and the Renaissance fusion of Christianity, Hermetic Philosophy and its associated 'sciences' of magic, astrology and alchemy, but were not going to get into that much details. The Renaissance Era, was also known as the re-birth, this was the time of very strong curiousity, magics, and mystical things. Men started to use the stars to date special events, they began using it to predict birth dates (calendars), and stories. This started what we call today a "Horoscope". Queen Elizabeth, a well educated women, believed in The Horoscope, when in January 15 1559, was chosen as the day of her coronation.

Today, Horoscopes are simular, with very minor changes. We have made horoscopes into fortuntelling, without the teller. We often seek to use to Horoscope to see our forcast of the next couple of weeks. Our horoscopes may tell us of our love, the way we are going to handle our money, or even our bestfriends. Back then, more than 4,000 years ago, literature, paintings, and sculptures all came together and reached a new height in astrology.

The saying "Star-Crossed Lovers" in the book, Romeo and Juliet, has various meanings among various people. One particular meaning, is often said to be the meaning of Shakespeare. Some scholars have maintained that this line is significant, since it suggests that these two were "fated to die." In other words, their "stars were crossed" from the beginning, and there was nothing they could do to avoid their outcome. Fate has brought Romeo and Juliet together ..on purpose. For an example, Romeo had came to the party of the Capulet's to be able to see his one true love Rosaline. When Romeo gets to the party he goe's to the bathroom, where he meets young Juliet. If Romeo's cousin and friend, Mercutio and Benvolio had'nt brought his to the party, he would have not been able to meet, the one's the star's paired his up with. This is a sign of Renaissance Astrology.

So in conclusion, the Renaissance people viewed and used astrology differnent then we did. They used it because history was more a of a blurr to them, and they didnt know as much as we did today. Today, we use astrology for our entertainment, but not all of us, some of us still use it for story telling and a lot more. Star-crossed lovers mean they were joined together by fate at the start and their love story was told by fate.

In the book/play, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo encounters some foils. Foils are characters whom personality or actions are on striking contrastto those of another charater. In this Creative Writing Assignment, I will be comparing and contrasting Romeo's four foils; Tybalt, Mecutio, Paris, and Benvolio.

Tybalt is one of the four foils to Romeo. Romeo is deeply in love with Juliet, but he can't tell Tybalt, because he is afraid of what Tybalt's reactions would be. Tybalt is constantly picking fights with the house of Montague's, mainly Romeo. Tybalt thinks Romeo came to the Capulet's mask party to tease and make fun of the Capulet's. Romeo tries to avoid the fight with Tybalt, but then Tybalt kills Mercutio, a friend of Romeo's. Romeo goes for revenge and kills Tybalt. Resulting that Romeo is now sent to banishment in Mantua, and he can no longer see Juliet neither.

Mercutio is Romeo's good friend, but also one of the foils of Romeo. Mercutio looks out for Romeo, he doesnt want Romeo to a coward. He teases Romeo about being in love with Rosaline, then during the fight when Romeo backs down to Tybalt, Mercutio tell's him not to be a coward and not to step down to a ratcatcher, and then fights Tybalt himself; which leads to his death, and the killing of Tybalt, which causes Romeo to be banned from Verona forever.

Paris wants to marry Juliet, which we all know that Romeo and Juliet are planning to get married. Juliet does'nt know how to tell her mom that she doe not want to marry Paris. So Juliet asked Friar Laurence for a poison to fake her death, so she can run away with Romeo. This turns into a distaster.

Benvolio, Cousin of Romeo, is very rightous. He tell's Romeo right from wrong, and looks out for him. Although, there are times when he should say things to Romeo. Such as, during the fight with Tybalt and Mercutio, he should have stopped Romeo from coming in. He should have also said something about Romeo's obsession with Rosaline. But, he is a loyal person, and that helped Romeo a lot.

So, in conclusion, these are the four foils in the book/play, Romeo and Juliet. They all have good sides, and bad sides, Some, they could'nt help being a foil, and others were just meant to be foils in the play.
