Watching Federer dominate Roddick 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 today made me think about tennis last summer. I played a lot, improved a lot (esp. my backhand), and went with a day pass with a fellow tennis fanatic to the US Open in Flushing, NY, and saw for the first time live tennis. I saw some incredible matches. Among the players I witnessed were Fernando Verdasco, Fernando Gonzalez, Andy Murray, Tatiana Golovin, Davenport, and Serena (on her comeback tour). The speed and power of the game live was out of this world. Murray and Gonzalez were especially impressive. Of course, one person I would have liked to see was Andre Agassi. And of course, it was impossible to see him. After watching those few weeks of hard court tennis live and on TV, I had a sense that a generation of tennis greats was coming to an end. It's hard to imagine tennis without the likes of Agassi, Sampras, Chang, and others, much like it was hard for me to imagine the NBA without Jordan, Malone, Stockton, Barkley when they retired. I became fans of these sports because of these players, and now that Agassi had retired, I felt a sense of melancholy similar to what you'd feel at the end of summer when camp was coming to an end. When Andre cried, we cried with him.

If you want to understand Andre better, here is a link to the best sports article written by the best sports writer of our generation, on one of the greatest athletes and personalities, ever. And before the main course by Gary Smith, enjoy the appetizer by a lesser-known writer, Kurt Streeter. Read these two articles in sequence so you get the full effect. And if you still crave more Andre, check out the third piece from SI as dessert. Trust me, you will not regret spending an hour reading him, savoring him, and remembering him.

Ninja wins

Another latenight battle session between myself and Dub. He loses.

Xygon Star (2:04:19 AM): there is no need for names that are longer than 1 syllable
Xygon Star (2:05:06 AM)
Xygon Star (2:05:13 AM): that's the future of nanotechnology
redfender01 (2:06:23 AM): the name adam is the first name ever
redfender01 (2:06:28 AM): so it's the best
redfender01 (2:06:31 AM): it created you
Xygon Star (2:06:40 AM):
first name ever in lore
Xygon Star (2:06:47 AM): chinese don't even believe in adam and eve
redfender01 (2:07:17 AM): what do they believe in, general tsao and zhang ziyi
Xygon Star (2:09:33 AM):
way of the sword
Xygon Star (2:09:42 AM): that's what they believed in
redfender01 (2:09:58 AM): the beginning of the world was just a sword?
redfender01 (2:10:39 AM): so in the beginning
redfender01 (2:10:41 AM): there was a sword
redfender01 (2:10:44 AM): and samurai and ninja
redfender01 (2:10:48 AM): and since they couldnt procreate
redfender01 (2:10:52 AM): samurai sliced ninja
Xygon Star (2:10:55 AM):
the beginning of the world is due to the start of the first being that can conceive that he's living and can think
redfender01 (2:10:56 AM): into two parts, man and woman
redfender01 (2:11:01 AM): and then the world began
redfender01 (2:11:16 AM): you're wrong
redfender01 (2:11:19 AM): samurai sliced ninja
redfender01 (2:11:22 AM): that's the beginning
Xygon Star (2:11:55 AM):
samurai did slice ninja
Xygon Star (2:12:04 AM): but only a shadow clone of the ninja
Xygon Star (2:12:19 AM): the real ninja summoned a dragon, and stepped on samurai
redfender01 (2:12:30 AM): they didnt have shadow clones or dragons
redfender01 (2:12:38 AM): it was the beginning of the world for pete's sake
redfender01 (2:12:50 AM): all there was was samurai sword and ninja
redfender01 (2:12:52 AM): who got sliced
Xygon Star (2:13:49 AM):
well the beginning of the world there was only samurai and ninja, stupid, but as soon as they appeared, it's not the beginning of the world anymore, so anything else can happen, such as ninja's summoning abilities, and samurai's weakness in all aspects of combat
redfender01 (2:13:50 AM): maybe, since samurai sliced so hard, the wind dragged behind the sword sliced off a really thin 3rd layer of ninja, which looked like a shadow clone
redfender01 (2:13:57 AM): but it was really just a ninja thin film
redfender01 (2:14:23 AM): no the world began after samurai and ninja
redfender01 (2:14:29 AM): there was nothing but them
redfender01 (2:14:31 AM): until the slice
redfender01 (2:14:47 AM): i cant believe you know your ninja cant beat samurai so you just give him magic powers
redfender01 (2:14:49 AM): what the hell is that
redfender01 (2:14:51 AM): you are such bullshit
Xygon Star (2:15:05 AM):
no, the slice happens after the world is created, an arena with two combatants dueling for glory
redfender01 (2:15:45 AM): the arena is just that
redfender01 (2:15:47 AM): but not the world
redfender01 (2:15:51 AM): there is more to the world than combat
Xygon Star (2:16:04 AM):
i have no abilities to bestow upon ninja, he is himself, without a need for any embellishments from me
Xygon Star (2:16:15 AM): that's why samurai lose
redfender01 (2:16:17 AM): yeah ok
redfender01 (2:16:21 AM): his summoning abilities
Xygon Star (2:16:23 AM):
because he thinks there is more to the world than combat
redfender01 (2:16:26 AM): right that was in all the stories
redfender01 (2:16:57 AM): ninja can summon whatever he wants
redfender01 (2:16:59 AM): but at the end of the world
redfender01 (2:17:01 AM): all that will be lieft
redfender01 (2:17:08 AM): is samurai and a bunch of ninja slices
redfender01 (2:17:30 AM): and then samurai will commit seppukku and ninja will disintegrate
redfender01 (2:17:31 AM): the end
Xygon Star (2:19:00 AM):
aha, but that's where the stupid samurai gets tricked
Xygon Star (2:19:10 AM): the ninja has retoration skills
Xygon Star (2:19:31 AM): besides, samurai only sliced ninja clones to pieces
Xygon Star (2:20:13 AM): the real ninja is meanwhile in a remote beach drinking margaritas
redfender01 (2:20:24 AM): well when the world ends he'll be pretty sad
redfender01 (2:20:30 AM): when he's floating in nothingness
redfender01 (2:20:37 AM): while samura has 80 virgins in heaven
Xygon Star (2:20:51 AM):
that's true, but at least he has established himself as the greatest champion of combat in all eternity
redfender01 (2:21:09 AM): ninja can be champion, samurai has 80 virgins
redfender01 (2:21:19 AM): and smash
redfender01 (2:21:27 AM): and all the virgins play smash
Xygon Star (2:21:28 AM):
plus he has babes all over the beach trying to frolic with him, except he likes to keep in the shadows and chill
redfender01 (2:21:46 AM): but the world is over so all that dissappears
Xygon Star (2:22:22 AM):
i said remote
redfender01 (2:22:26 AM): and samurai has smash playing virgins
Xygon Star (2:22:31 AM):
that means it could be a different dimension
Xygon Star (2:22:47 AM): because ninjas can travel both temporally, spatially, and dimensionally
redfender01 (2:22:58 AM): world, in this context is the universe
redfender01 (2:23:04 AM): which encompasses all continnua
Xygon Star (2:23:11 AM):
no, world is how each of us percieves our surroundings
Xygon Star (2:23:19 AM): other dimensions who knows what is going on
Xygon Star (2:24:06 AM): if you don't agree, read Leibnez's theory on World Creating
redfender01 (2:24:28 AM): Leibnez can say whatever he wants
redfender01 (2:24:30 AM): doesn't mean he's right
redfender01 (2:24:40 AM): it's a theory
Xygon Star (2:24:40 AM):
he mentions Ninja's supreme powers in one of his proofs
redfender01 (2:25:03 AM): samurai doesnt care about ninja's bullshit made up powers and dimensions, he's going to go play smash with virgins
Xygon Star (2:25:09 AM):
where he equated the powers of the ninja to the dimensionless quantity of infinite
redfender01 (2:26:11 AM): i want to pay to get my likeness in a smash game
redfender01 (2:26:22 AM): i wish i knew someone who programmed
Xygon Star (2:26:55 AM):
wow
Xygon Star (2:27:12 AM): you'd look like luigi
redfender01 (2:27:15 AM): how fun would that be
redfender01 (2:27:19 AM): yeah with a moustache
Xygon Star (2:27:25 AM):
wait enis would loook more like luigi
redfender01 (2:27:33 AM): he really does look exactly like him
redfender01 (2:27:41 AM): and jyri like link
redfender01 (2:27:47 AM): anil like the puffs
Xygon Star (2:27:58 AM):
josh like mario
Xygon Star (2:28:01 AM): me like marth
Xygon Star (2:28:12 AM): you like meowtwo
Xygon Star (2:28:51 AM): yeah they should create a mode
Xygon Star (2:28:56 AM): well
Xygon Star (2:29:13 AM): if they added a camera feature to the new Wii system
Xygon Star (2:29:19 AM): you can take pictures of yourself
Xygon Star (2:29:26 AM): and add your mugshot to any game you play
Xygon Star (2:29:31 AM): to the characters
redfender01 (2:29:59 AM): well that would be stupid
redfender01 (2:30:02 AM): you'd never see the face
redfender01 (2:30:09 AM): i mean it would be mildly funny
redfender01 (2:30:14 AM): actually yeahr that would be so easy for them to do
Xygon Star (2:30:15 AM):
it'd depend on the pixels of the tv
redfender01 (2:30:29 AM): well no cuz the smash characters are so small when you're fighting
redfender01 (2:30:33 AM): i think the body shape and clothes
Xygon Star (2:30:42 AM):
for game cube they already have a camera that you can buy i think
redfender01 (2:30:42 AM): that wouldnt be that hard to do
redfender01 (2:30:48 AM): i mean just like in tony hawk
Xygon Star (2:30:49 AM):
wait or is that gameboy advanced
redfender01 (2:30:51 AM): you make up the character
redfender01 (2:30:58 AM): and then if you could just add the mug shot
redfender01 (2:31:01 AM): that would be really cool
Xygon Star (2:31:11 AM):
yeah
redfender01 (2:31:22 AM): it's been done before too
redfender01 (2:31:27 AM): just you dont get to take your own photo
redfender01 (2:31:32 AM): well let's cross our fingers
redfender01 (2:31:45 AM): before samurai slices them off
Xygon Star (2:31:55 AM):
or if they had a camera, and software that can translate a digital photo of you into a cartoonish characters based on the RGB values of the photo, that'd be really sweet
Xygon Star (2:32:02 AM): so you can dress yourself up for the game
Xygon Star (2:33:22 AM): yo, i gotta hit the sack
redfender01 (2:33:28 AM): ok man

Brown's annual Spring Weekend is coming up, and I'm voicing my complaints right here on Xanga. The best we can do is Common and Wilco? How about Jay-Z and Weezer? People would actually pay a hefty amount to see that, and be HAPPY about it. Now, people are just paying for cheap tickets to see lesser bands, and will leave empty. My last Spring Weekend at Brown will be without the concert experiences of the past. I'm shaking my head in dismay.

The following are concerts I've been to outside of Brown, in chronological order. The first one was when I was still in middle school:

Metallica (first concert of my life) - We had boxed seats, because my friend Fred Rollins's dad worked for a corporation that dished out free concert tickets at the Knickerbocker Arena (now the Pepsi Arena in Albany). We didn't get the full experience. But it was hell of a way to kick start my live music experiences. I'm almost glad i wasn't down in the mosh pit. I probably would have died. At the time I didn't know enough about Metallica to truly appreciate them. I had known the songs Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Hero of the Day, Sad but True, Fade to Black, Nothing Else Matters, and One. That was it. Now that I look back on it, I couldn't appreciate the concert, and Metallica in all their glory. 'Twas a pity.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, and Foo Fighters - I saw them at SPAC in Saratoga. Flea danced around on stage just about butt naked, with his bass strapped low-style almost to his knees, John Frusciante looked drunk, high, and really confused. His body contorted in different directions against the rhythm of the songs, while his guitar playing was right on beat and wailed soulfully. Scott Weiland of STP literally just got out of rehab, and i think had fallen off the wagon already. I wasn't a huge fan of the Foo Fighters, and Dave Grohl is kind of a pansy. I'm glad they started the show, and not ended it.

Weezer - At the time, I was in a Weezer cover band. "Wrestle With Jimmy" formed when I was a junior in HS. We played songs from the Blue album to the Green album. Some of our favorites were from Pinkerton though, like "Tired of Sex" and "The Good Life". We performed at school functions and graduation parties and even tried playing a gig at a tavern next to the highway where bikers and hoodlums brooded and lurked. Needless to say, my first Weezer concert was something sublime. The band wouldn't come on stage for the longest time. But when Rivers finally walked out and slung his guitar strap over his shoulder, I could feel the crowd look up in awe. We were about to explode, and we did when Rivers started singing "My name is Jonas, and I'm carrying the wheel...". The quality of Rivers's voice sounded studio-like. And when "Across the Sea" came on, I think a couple of people fainted near me.

Blink 182, Greenday - This one was special. Nothing beats Mike Dirnt squirting a Super Soaker at you when you are in the 3rd row center, and catching a pick thrown by Billy Joe himself. Travis from Blink played the drums in a cage upside down 20 feet in the air during "Going away to college." Following that summer I was coming to Brown. I left that concert deaf, and with a huge grin on my face.

Dispatch - It was first semester freshman year college, and this band was hot. Dispatch was another band that I didn't know a whole lot about before I went to the concert. But after the concert at Lupo's, I went out and bought 2 of their albums. Now they are one of my favorite bands. Too bad they broke up.

Red Hot Chili Peppers (2nd time), Saves the Day, Fishbone - This time I got to know RHCP a lot better before the concert, and my voice was shot from singing along. I'm lucky I've seen them twice already. Oh yeah my friends and I ended up in a mosh pit during "Cant's Stop" and everyone left with bruises. My watch strap broke, and we spent 15 minutes after the concert looking for a segment of it, to no avail. It was one of the best concerts to date.

Incubus - When you talk about good bands, you often talk about their showmanship onstage, their gimmicks, the fireworks, the drama. Incubus just played every beat, every note, every pause, pitch, and power chord PERFECTLY. Their musicality was ridiculous, almost to the point where it's boring. "Are you in" was the most bad ass kick ass song played.

Jimmy Eat World - This concert was at a small venue (Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY). It rocked. All I got to say. Afterwards we went out the back door and met the band. The 2 girls who Dan and I were with went on to the band bus. They didn't invite Dan and I. =(

Guster - This one was at Indian Point Park in Providence. The stage was set right next to the river. Adam Gardner's voice was amazing, pristine. "Demons" was played as the wind along the river picked up. It gave me chills. They ended with "Keep it together".

John Mayer, Maroon 5, Alanis Morissette, 5 for Fighting, The Calling, Los Lonely Boys, Lenny Kravitz - Mixfest 2004 was held in Fleet Center, Boston, Mass. The concert lasted like over 4 hours. Luckily there were seats. I enjoyed Alanis and Lenny the most. John Mayer is just too good at the guitar. It's really not fair at all. I'd like to see him collaborate with Eric Clapton. Adam Levine's voice sounded weak. Maybe he had one too many Sex On the Beach's.

There are 2 more months left in my college career. I will sleep less and savor the waking moment more.
