Silas Marner (Bantam Classics)

"Well, to be sure, you can read 'em off," said Dolly. "Ben's read 'em to me many and many a time, but they slip out o' my mind again; the more's the pity, for they're good letters, else they wouldn't be in the church; and so I prick 'em on all the loaves and all the cakes, though sometimes they won't hold, because o' the rising--for, as I said, if there's any good to be got we've need of it i' this world--that we have; and I hope they'll bring good to you, Master Marner, for it's wi' that will I brought you the cakes; and you see the letters have held better nor common."
-----

"Ah, if there's good anywhere, we've need of it," repeated Dolly, who did not lightly forsake a serviceable phrase.
----

"Well, yes, Master Marner," said Dolly, who sat with a placid listening face, now bordered by grey hairs; "I doubt it may. It's the will o' Them above as a many things should be dark to us; but there's some things as I've never felt i' the dark about, and they're mostly what comes i' the day's work. You were hard done by that once, Master Marner, and it seems as you'll never know the rights of it; but that doesn't hinder there being a rights, Master Marner, for all it's dark to you and me."

"No," said Silas, "no; that doesn't hinder. Since the time the child was sent to me and I've come to love her as myself, I've had light enough to trusten by; and now she says she'll never leave me, I think I shall trusten till I die."

I've had a lot of headaches since I got back to school. I'm not sure if it's stress or what. I'll be working at the Opportunities Fair tomorrow afternoon. Come by and see me!!!   It's pretty great living with my awesome quad peoples and having Jess and Vee across the hall!

ok, headache is too bad to continue. More later.

Micah and I went to the mall today, to celebrate his birthday by sitting on mall benches and writing haiku. Hopefully he will also want to share his with you. Here are mine.

the GAP

between what and what?
elegance for skinny legs
not a woman there.

sisters, same short skirts
pudgy legs, affected style
no, not flattering

she’s only five (outside Abercrombie & Fitch)

mommy, I can see
your daughter’s panties as she
twists to a porn beat

mall fountain ripples
pennies, nickels, quarters, dimes
very small fortune

Spencers

do they really have
pretty, dirty things inside?
i see lava lamps…

Epigram for the Body Shop

how will I butter
my body without your store?
no more pink loofahs.

so many sparkles
a store on every corner
diamond opulence

hustle bustle food
gulp down sodas and French fries
smothered in ketchup

Reluctant Saint: The Life of Francis of Assisi
By Donald Spoto

I go back to school in 8 days, I guess. Next Saturday. When the dorms open. I'm looking forward to it a lot, but I'm also realizing how much I'm going to miss the peace and irresponsiblity of these last few weeks. While I was working, there was more stress, etc, but now it's quite nice...I could do it forever. Or at least for a while longer.

I just finished a great bio of St. Francis. I'd realized that he was score, but I didn't know HOW score! It's like he was a breath of fresh air all around in the Middle Ages. The author also does a really good job of making Francis alive, without neglecting the facts. I'd definitely recommend it.
