1508 Zulu

So....the past few weeks have been treating me pretty well I figure.

SERCAAL was very interesting, hearing lots of things being tossed around in the air. Spoken word workshop rocked, definitely giving me some impetus. Definitely gonna go again next year. Jin and Vudoo Soul were pretty damn good too.

DTJ was just plain fucking fun as hell. Props to UCF for taking 1st, even if it is a little belated. Jin's performance was sick, god I was so tired the next day.

Fast forward, some classes and minor things here and there and shit. Thanksgiving break was boring as hell, just chilled out with Brian, Josh, Sung, Sam, Victor, and sowithforth in no particular order in Olrando. Then the familia a little bit. And thanksgiving dinner with some old fogeys, which was boring as hell as usual. Black Friday was so-so, didn't camp out. But went the next day and picked up a couple pairs of shoes and some t-shirts.

So starting to pick up some music, Brian started teaching me a little bit about the piano the other day. A whole lot more fun than classes.

But speaking of classes, I need to fucking study my ass off for accounting, blech. It's all good though, the semester's almost over. Then working for a few days and then down home, then Miami for a few days, heading back to Orlando for Christmas and then NYC for New Year's! Can't wait to go to NYC.

Hm....can't really think of much else to say right now, and it's almost time to go to class. So adios for now.

2009 Zulu

Ate at Steamer's on Monday, the curry there is sooo freaking good. So damn hot though, burned the whole time as I ate it. But it felt so damn good. Reminds me of how a good meal can really lift up one's day.

Good tunes as well. Got Common Market and the Native Guns flowing through my headphones from time to time now, check out the "Every Last One" remix with "Corner Stone" by Common Market and the Blue Scholars at http://youtube.com/watch?v=d12HyGiePig good stuff. Wanna go check out Seattle...

SERCAAL's on Friday, looking forward to that. Day's gonna be so packed, SERCAAL all day and then DTJ at night, should be fun.

But yeah, speaking of issues that SERCAAL's all about, as some old fogey was leaving the restaurant yesterday after his meal (he had already dropped off a slightly singed carrot right onto the counter-top, saying "You shouldn't be using this carrot" like a bitch) he remarked to another group of customers "The Chinese are a race without imagination." That comment has just been burning me like freaking crazy. I'm not stupid, I know people like that are pretty common place. But still, meeting up with it face to face doesn't make me feel any more at home with it. I'm not Chinese, but given the guy's viewpoint, I doubt he'd know the damn difference, and if he did, I doubt he'd change his opinion just because I eat nưốc mắm. I dunno what else to say, whatta motherfucker.

Hm, back to studying for my Viet quiz. Gotta give all of these uncompleted thoughts an ending eventually.

1810 Zulu

www.i-am-asian.com

So McDonald's has a site geared towards Asian-Americans... I guess it's a good thing that we're getting some publicity? Been waiting all these years to get validation as an American by the big arches.

Oh wow, they even have stuff in Vietnamese.

Geez, make an 'Asian' chicken salad and suddenly people start wondering if Ronald McDonald has some Asian ancestry in the closet, oooo, exotic.

They're even promoting Asian-American Heritage Month, interesting.

Time to go drop by Mickey D's to see what's up. And see what gibberish characters people're putting up to look cool.

In the words of spoken word artist Jennii Le, I am not Vietnamese.

Stubmled across her performance a couple of days ago when I was looking up Magnetic North stuff (the video for Drift Away is up, check that shit out, it's freaking awesome, and Jennii Le also makes an appearance in it, but that's an unrelated note) and she blew me away. She puts down in words some of the things that come across my mind when I think about a Vietnamese-American identity and runs with it. She's definitely someone to watch in the future.

I got a couple of other things on my mind to elaborate on that line of thought but in this time constraint that I have before I head off to work I don't think I can really get it down. Finding artists like her, Bao Phi, Magnetic North, Blue Scholars, etc. make me appreciate having my hearing to listen to them, an understanding of the words that come outta their thoughts, and fucking make me wanna just grab a pen and beat the shit outta this fucking writer's block of mine and get some words scribbled down to call my own.

But yeah, more on that dead horse writer's block of mine later. Gotta head off to work, I'll try to elaborate later.

On a final note though, a translation of the Vietnamese at the end of Jennii Le's poem:
"I'm sorry mother, I won't say anymore
I don't understand why you never told me, explained this story to me
Because I never knew.
I am Le Thi Huong, and I'm Vietnamese"

Later.
