Do you believe in god?

Do you believe in God? For most of you in Myanmar, the answer is 'No'. But for most in Australia (which is where I'm right now) the answer may be 'Yes'. I used to be Anti-god for the last year few years. Or I like to think of myself as my own god i.e. extreme confidence and self-esteem, which might seem crazy a bit.  But now my believes have been evolved again. So, I want to discuss about God from a different point of view, how I think about life.

In our philosophy about this world, everything happen for a reason, cause and effect. So you all agree, there must be something that causes our existance. That is when I feel Buddhism is incomplete. It doesn't explain about the origin. So I feel the need to explore more about other concepts. Everything in the world we live look so intentional, i.e. things and events don't really happen in random.

I don't really know much about The Big Bang, neither do I know anything about Genesis. But I know you can't get something out of nothing. So I believe there must be something that causes our existance, and I call that as "God". God may be a life form or a lifeless form. God may have intentionality or not. And God may have self-conciousness or not. There might even be more than one god. I simply believe in a reason or reasons for our existance and I call that "God".

Note that I'm not following any existing religion in this world. I'm just thinking for a logical point of view. Whether one worships God or not is also a different story. So I'm gonna be asking your opinions about God. Do you also believe in God? And why?

Discussing about religions can be offensive. So I'm sorry if my discussion offends you and your believes, and I suggest you don't read further posts. Religion is some ground we lived since we were born, and very important for us.

Time has no beginning nor end...because it is made up of series of events which are happening again and again. We're juz a part of that small impermanent events...that's what i believe. I am not denying the existence of higher beings ( that u may call it God ) though.

I know you’ve been having issues with God. For me, I’m confused enough with my own self. I can’t care about other existences or nonexistences.

So, my answer is just I don’t wanna think about anything anymore.

If you ask me, all religious entities are a figment of our imagination. Imaginary friends, something we made up to have something to do and not feel as lonely as we really are. My opinion, choose to hear or not.

Wow.. what an entry. That is intense. I saw that you visited my sight and just wanted to see who you were. I beleive there is One God and I beleive in creation, according to Genesis. Here's my word to you =) :

There is no solid proof that the God of the Bible exists. There is no crystal clear evidence to gives us proof beyond a shadow of a doubt that He exists, yet just as you said, just by LOOKING at the world around us, we know there MUST be a higher power.  How else would photosynthisis be able to work? How else could an eye be so intricate, so small, and yet we can see the stars millions of miles away? How else could life come into existance by only starting with the tiniets of egg and sperm? Those kinds of quesitons tell me that there IS a higher power.  For me, there is only ONE higher Power... Jesus Christ, my Savior.

But since I have no solid, concrete evidence that there IS a God, I have to have faith. I have faith that what I beleive is true. I can't speak for anyone else, but my heart is at peace becuase I have hope in God. I have seen him work in my life, answer my prayers and the prayers of those around me. I have felt his comfort when no one else could help me. And most of all... I feel completed where no one else and nothing else could fill the gap in my soul.

I know that sounds really poetic and fluffy, but please know that I am speaking form my heart! If you want to talk more, i love to listen to people's opinions on religion and such. I wont argue with you or try to convince you of something. I just like to listen.  =)

My advice for you would be, read Genesis. You said you don't know much about it, so try it on for size! :D It might give you peace about somethings and answer your questions.

well well well...here i am again, ko aung   (yeahh i'm bugging you all the time).  I'm glad that you brought this topic up.  i think we had a discussion about this before and i advised you to go check out that web site www.billygraham.org  well, you'll find it VERY helpful if you just give a try.  anyway, like "sarachelle24" has said, you know God's existence in many ways.  but that, you're just hearing or reading what someone has experienced God's existence in his or her life.  but why don't you experience it in your OWN life?  let me give you an example by telling a little story.

"There were two little boys named Tom and Sam who have never touched water before.  They don't know if  water is cold, hot or warm...they don't know what water feels like.  and on one hot summer day, they were sitting by a beach and just looking at the water wondering "what is it?  how does it feel like?  is it cold? hot? warm? what does it do to you?"

all of a sudden, a girl came to them asked "what are you guys doing?"  and they said "well, we're just wondering how water feels like 'cause we've never touched it before."  and the girl said "it's cold".  and those boys said "how do you know it's cold?"  and the girl said "well, because i touched it myself.  that's how i know."  and Tom said "get outta here! it can not be cold, because it's very hot out here and very sunny.  so it can NOT be cold.  also, how come all those fish and plants survive in that water if it's cold?"  and the girl said, "well, i don't know how those fish and plants survive.  i don't know why it's cold if it's very hot out here.  but i know it's cold because I TOUCHED IT! so why don't you get up and touch it?"  and Tom said "NO!"

Sam, who was listening to the whole thing, said to the girl "well, if you really touched it, then i'll give a try to see if you're right."  Then, Sam got up and touched the water.  as the little girl has said, Sam came to experience the coldness of water.  Tom, who doesn't believe in that, was left by the beach, still wondering and questioning.  until he grew old and died, he never experienced the coldness of water because he never gave a try."

ko aung, i think by now, you know what i am talking about.  I don't know all those philosophy about God and all those questions that you asked. But, i KNOW that there's God becasue I have experienced God's miracles in my own life.  that why i wanna tell you this.  Experience God's existence in your own life!  i'm sure you don't wanna end up like Tom.  You can ask God to show you a miracle in your life.  any troubles that no human beings in your life can solve, ask God to solve it for you.  and i'm sure God will show you not only a miracle, but miracles.

"I believe in one supreme God because He has revealed Himself to us! He has not left us to guess what He is like; He has shown Himself to us. He did this supremely by coming down to earth in the person of His only Son, Jesus Christ. I invite you to give your life to Christ, for in Him alone 'are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge'(Colossians 2:3)."

remember ko aung, I'm always praying for you

I believe in existence of God. I just don't agree with other people on what God is.

Some philosophers even do believe that God existed once, but he/she is dead now.

haha, no I dont hate you =) Thanks for sharing. Just to reply to your comment, I think God DOES want us to love him, not because He needs it, you're right He's God...but He has done, is doing, and WILL do so much for us, that its the least we can do to show love and appreciate to Him, giving Him glory for all things.  I beleive it IS important to have a realization of Jesus in order to understand the magnitude of what He did for us on the Cross and what He taught us during His breif time on earth.  My job as a Christian is to 1)acknowledge the Lord in everthing 2)build the body of Christ.  I must have a realization of Jesus Christ in order to help build His body of beleivers.  If I dont have a realization of Him, what good am I as a beleiver? I think what OC was trying to say in that statement, is that if all Christians do is sit around and work on their spiritual life only, they are dead weight.  We have to grow, but we must also help other grow in the body of Christ...we do that through our recognition of Him.

I dont know if any of that made sense, it was kinda a whim thought haha. Thanks again for you comment, I like hearing responses.  Have a great one...let me know what you think of this (up there) if you want.

Later days...

We human beings believe that we can understand and discover anything. But everything has its limitation. What is our limitation? Do we have the capacity to know the reason of our own existence.

i know what u mean by we are slaves to something and there is no complete freedom in this Universe. Maybe that's the reason why Buddha told us that this is a plane of suffering.

I believe that  there is an unmoved mover(which is similar to ur idea )and I consider that as a god. I believe in it because if god has a conscious mind of it's own, he or she won't let such terrible things happen to this world. Well, at least that's what i believe.

Most people believe in a god. I'd go so far as to say all people do. It just might not be your god, the way you've been taught to believe and acts in the specific way that you you believe. I wonder why some people take offense to that.

I mean if you're talking about a god as in some universal force that created everything, sure I can relate to that.

Good points. I do not believe in God or hold the belief that we are here for a reason. That's quite ego-centric point of view, according to me - sorry if I offend anyone. We are here, along with other life forms, as a result of chains of biochemical reactions that went on for years, and are still going on till this world no longer exists. We are here due to "accidents" that happened long ago - the right compounds came together under the right conditions and the first sustainable life form was born.

We are born, we live and we will die - that's the end of it. The only form of us that continue to live will be our DNA through our descendants. It's a grim picture and not a very comforting one. Obviously, the concept of supreme being or God - purposely creating life forms and watching us, judging us, looking after us (those who pray that is; obviously not me)- is more comforting. I believe that human believes in religion as a form of self defense mechanism or self preservation (because without hope, we don't function well); not so much because it is the truth.
