My favorite holiday is almost here!

Looks like I'm going to have a big group for Thanksgiving this year...so I'm already working on my menu.

So far, it looks like we're going to need a giant turkey, maybe 16-20 pounds.  Now the question is: to brine or not to brine...

What else...Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Bacon, some modified Green Bean Casserole (probably with more bacon), some sort of potatoes, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing...

Anybody have any ideas?

I ride bikes now

So ever since my big trip this summer, I have become a big fan of bike riding!  We rented bikes in Amsterdam and Paris and found them to be the best way to see those cities.  Anyone whose known me since high school can probably remember the Great Bike Crash of Senior Trip 97, when I not only managed to crash my bike and slide with it for about 100 yards through the mud but also called out someone's names just before so that everyone could see my most graceful act.  Well, needless to say, I stayed off bikes for years but this trip has changed all that.  Well, the trip and my new life in Philly.  See my job is about 30 blocks away and public transportation closes down at midnight.  Being a cook can sometimes involve late hours and not a large enough salary to afford frequent cabs so I have been borrowing a friend's bike for my daily commute.  It takes only about 10 minutes for me to get to work (as opposed to the 45 smelly minutes I'd have to spend on the subway) so it's an ideal situation.

So on Sunday, Amy and I went over to Target to buy our own bikes.  She found this cool blue and silver Schwinn with a beach cruiser look.  I found the cheapest simple 15 speed bike they had and was done with it.  It worked well and would get me where I need to go until I could one day invest in something I really liked.  So this morning on my day off, Amy and I decided that we were going to go for a ride...run some errands...go to Trader Joe's....maybe take a peaceful ride along the river...and get some exercise.  Well, we got downstairs and see nothing.  Nothing but a broken chain where our bikes were safely locked up the night before.  Yup, my brand new effin bike has been stolen.

Getting settled in Philly life

So I've been a resident of Philadelphia for about a month now.  A few days after moving into our place I started sending out my resume to cool restaurants that posted jobs on craigslist.  The first resume I sent was to a restaurant called Ansill Food + Wine.  About 15 minutes after I hit send, I got a call from David Ansill to come in and interview.  Turns out David is a huge fan of Prune (the resto I externed at).  The interview was cool and then I went in the next day to trail.  I got the job and I've been there ever since!  So far I love it.  I work the saute station and make a killer pasta with snails and truffle butter!   Other cool dishes, pan fried sweetbreads with saute mushrooms and truffle coulis, pan fried bronzino with escarole and mussels, a shirred duck egg, roasted brussel sprouts with apple smoked bacon...and that's just some stuff from my station.  I'm also a huge fan of the osso bucco sandwich that the grill station does.  So...if you find yourself in Philly anytime soon, stop in!  We are open every night and located on 3rd & Bainbridge (one street south of South Street).  The website: www.ansillfoodandwine.com  Check it out!

Hey Prague Czech me out!

So today we leave Prague for Florence.  We are heading first to Munich to change to the night train to Florence.  We have made some fun friends along the way.  Our roommate here is from Chile...but she lives in Buenos Aires...now I have a place to crash when I visit!  Yay!  So far the trip has been pretty crazy...we are constantly on the go though so I'm quite tired...I'm hoping that this 16 hour train trip set me right...but most likely it will just make me more tired.  hahah...Czech beer is awesome!!  My favorite so far is the Budvar 11....dark and delish.  We also had some great vegetarian Indian food here for about $2.  Gotta love the cheap food and beer!!  Hopefully, I'll get more internet time soon so that I can actually upload pictures.  More later...

We are no longer New Yorkers

We moved out of our apartment on Saturday.  Currently, we are without home.   I already miss my LES apartment!  Waaahhhhh!  For the next two weeks, I'm a Brooklynite!  hahaha!  Crashing at R's place until we leave for Europe on the 18th...for now, I'm still counting down the days till I can quit the crappy job.  8 more working days!!!! I'm almost free!
