Ohamani ~

I have arrived in Japan safe and sound.  Aside from the missing the bus from the airport, driving the taxi driver crazy, getting lost for 2 hours looking for my new school, while randomly stopping about 10 Japanese asking for direction, I think I am doing okay.  Anyway I got into Tokyo at 2:30 yesterday, was going to ride the 3:30 bus from Narita Airport to Miyuki hotel but then I miss the bus because I had to pee... and had to drag all my stuff in to the bathroom with me... and I came back 3 minutes late.  So I went to the ticket counter and ask them for another ticket... so I end up leaving the airport at 4:30... I arrived at Miyuki Hotel at 6:15 and got a Taxi but the taxi driver didn't know where I am going (it turned out that I gave him the wrong address)... well... so the Taxi driver, the hotel attendant, and I tried for half an hour to figure out where I am going... then I finally realised I had the address of the rental office and not the property itself and I gave him the right address... Anyway, so I arrived at WM Shirokane (the place I am staying for now) around 7:30... of course the office was closed.. and I was at the front door with all my stuff... on the door there is a sign that says for emergency press "call" then dial "119"... I was stuck there for a while and didn't know what to do, certainly I didn't want to call the police (119 is the number for police in Taiwan, and 911 is the number for police in the US... so I just assumed that 119 is for police in Japan as well)... finally a Japanese person came into the building and I asked her if she knows how to contact the person in charge and she said dail 119... so I did... and he came out and I finally checked into my place.  Anyway, the place is super small... how small... I think my bedroom in Buffalo is bigger than the entire apartment... also... if you don't beleive me... my bathroom is 3 feet by 4 feet... I can trip and not fall in the bathroom because I am bound to hit something before I fall.  Anyway, at least I have a place to stay... Oh well... I went to eat at this tiny sushi restaurant last night there is like 5 seats in the house around the sushi bar... the food was okay, it was pretty good compare to the value of sushi we get in the US.  Anyway... after dinner I went to buy a map of Tokyo and spent the night watching TV and trying to figure out the map.

This morning I got up at 9:00 took a shower and went exploring the area... I have not enter the Tokyo I have been expecting... rather I end up getting lost in the little streets of Tokyo... I spent about 2 hours getting lost before I finally found Temple University Japan center (my school for the next 4 months)... it was only 20 minutes from the place I am staying... I guess my lack of sense of direction do apply internationally.  The good thing about me getting lost is that I found the German embassy, and the Korean embassy in Tokyo... Anyway... so yeah that:s pretty much what I did today... getting lost... finding embassys... oh well... at least I know where my school is.

Tomorrow I am planing to expand my search... I am going to Akasaka to the Bank of America and see if I can avoid the exchange rate if I use my US account if not I am going to open an account in Japan.  Further, I am going to look for housing agencies to find a place I can stay for the rest of my stay... Finally I have to go to Temple University Tokyo to pick up my books.... Anyway... that's all for now... will write more later.

Due to the complaint from the law student body (mostly Sarah) I've decided to incorporate my life in the law school into a part of my posting.  So here it goes... today... Sarah, Kate, Victor, Cindy, Niki, and I got our asses kicked in Immigration Law... you'd think immigration law is not difficult but let me tell you whoever wrote that statute is crazy... it's everywhere... anyway... almost fell asleep during tax law... the only amusing part of that class was seeing Ricky and Asma doing the investment game thing (Ricky who picked all his stocks through throwing darts made over $2000 and Asma who did her research and made her charts lost over 100) anyway... After class talked to Karen, Jason, and Jess for a little bit... then was Jenny standing in the lobby in her bright red new winter coat... it's a very cute coat and Jenny wears it well... she's like the little red riding hood... but the ironic part is Jenny might look very sweet on the outside she is very sarcastic in the inside... (the combination of her appearance and her words very often gives people... well gives me... the refreshing feeling of getting kick in the face)... can't help but wonder if Jenny had beaten up so sweet little kid on the street and take away her coat... just kidding... anyway.... it's time to go to my next class where I will see Jen and Christine... where we'll enjoy an hour and half of criminal procedure.

I am inside the law library... in my little room... room 352 on the third floor of the library.  I have my books stacked... and paper all over my desk.  I am currently drinking a large cup of dunkin donust iced coffee (with cream and sugar!).  Next to my coffee is a box of 25 munchkins...(actually I got 29.. I counted... 29... it's a prime number! I love prime numbers)... Next to the the munchkins is my laptop... and in front of it is a piece of US patent... the first patent I am going to review.  It took me a while to figure out what I want to review as my first patent... I've considered the dog hat... the tooth cleaning chew toy for cats... the winchester refle... and a baseball bat which you can replace the batting part if you ever break it during the game.  Well... what I end up with is "System and Process for the Recovery of Propylene and Ethylene from Refinery Offgases"!  I know I am laughing at myself and asking... WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU MAN... but the truth is when I saw the design diagram... I just couldn't resist it... the distillation column (that's something I haven't spelled for a long long time... distillation)... the reboiler... the bottom stream... the condenser... and of course the charts and equations... as I was reading it... I thought about the old days at CMU and the old Chem E friends that I haven't talked to for a while... how we used sit in the Chem E cluster for hours cursing at a diagram very much like the one in front of me... I thought about John (whom I saw just a few weeks back)... thought about Wai and how she used to try to kill me in lab classes... thought about Libby and how she drank me under the table after 1 long island ice tea (I am a lot stronger now than I used to... just wait Libby next time I see you... I'd cream your Irish/German drinking skill with my Australian drinking skill... you just wait)... and Eva who is too strange for me to describe at the moment... Earl and Diana... can't thought of one without the other... for a moment I have the urge to take my chair down to the hall way and roll around like we used to in the Chem E chair race... but then who can I race against?  I took another sip at my coffee and ate anothe munchkin and thought about how perfect this moment is... my past and my present come together in this tiny cubicle... Engineering and law exist together in harmony... maybe this is what I should do for a living... maybe..

2 hours later...

Coffee almost gone... 14 munchkins remaining... still reading the patent... thinking about how the process is pretty cool...but can you really claim all that?  24 claims!...  it's going to be a long day (and I think this is a short patent)... thinking maybe patent isn't for me...

2 more hours later...

Coffee is 80% gone... 8 munchkins remaining (I think I am just eatting them mindlessly now)... still looking at the claims... my conclusion... This Chem E patent is annoying... it doesn't patent the process units (coz well... they can't because it is all part of the prior art that people know about)... instead they patent the setup of the process... like pressure...temperature... the composition of the feed stream... and the feeding location in a distillation column... (I think all of the Chem E patents might all be like that)... anyway... I need a break from the claims now... )... One thing though... the definition requirement of the patent is that the disclosure must be written in a way that a person who is skilled in the art should be able to understand it... and yes I understand the process!  I guess I am skilled in the art of chemical engineering ... and those who disagree with it... well I am not going to go there.

....2 days later... Coffee is long gone... 7 munchkins gone stale... back home... in front of my computer... still looking at the patent... feels like the Boston Red Sox having problem closing the day... gone to extra 50 innings... oh well... it's been a long and fun weekend...

On my way back from my vacation that blows (I was so sick for that I stayed in the hotel except during meal time) I took a texi to the airport.  The driver asked me where I was from... and I told him I am from Boston, but I go to school in Buffalo.  Then he asked me "what do you think of bush?"... and I said... "I was sick so I didn't get to go to the bush walk."... and he said "no... I mean your president"... and I was like "uh... I don't like him much"... then he asked me "what the hell is wrong with Americans and why didn't John Kerry got elected... and how did Bush win his first term?"... I didn't know where to start answering the question... and i don't really know how to tell him that the decision of a few justices at the supreme court could decide the fate of one election... by the time I get around to thinking how I should explain the whole thing... I was at the airport already... so I told him... "I don't know mate... really I don't really know what's wrong with my country... but I'll keep on fighting... because I am part of the process... and I feel responsible... but I don't know what's wrong America mate... I just don't know."
