me me me - Hello everybody!  This has been an update a long time coming eh?  Sooooo, for the past few months I have been living in the majestic state of California.  I just wanna put it out there, but I’m pretty sure this is the promise land of the US J  If you’ve kept up with the pictures I’ve posted on facebook you’ll know.  Anyways… I’ve been working for a sweet division of HP called Voodoo, where we make cutting-edge laptops and desktops designed for the most hardcore (and rich) of gamers.  Like our Omen unit just came out and goes for $6k-$20k!  (No, sorry, I cant get free stuff for you guys nor can I really get them for myself…well…maybe for myself… )  You can check out some of the products I’m working on at www.voodoopc.com , I’m the designer for the laptops that the company releases.  I found an awesome church called LSCC up in Milpitas and I’m hanging out with Vincent and Bonnie a ton.  The only thing that could make it perfect is if Joyce was with me in SF L, but that might not happen anytime soon.  A lot has happened these past four months!  So much that I don’t know quite where to start.  I’ve gone hangliding, been biking on mountain trails (50 miles with Vincent!), rode my motorcycle with the church group, and I’ve been learning how to take better photos.  Definitely a packed 4 months since Dallas.

And that now leads me to my current situation.  I’ve obviously been really happy here in California but my job is leading me elsewhere… Those who know me well know that I’ve always wanted to work in Taiwan.  I have a chance to do a 6-month renewable tour in Taiwan with Voodoo, where I can work as an Industrial Designer in a really sweet office next to the 101.  I’m pretty much set on it, but it’s quite a scary transition.  I thought moving to Cali was already a big step, but moving to TAIWAN!  Crazy huh?  I think it’s gonna be an awesome experience though, learning how design works in Asia and learning the language a bit better.  When I have kids I definitely want them to learn Chinese from me so it’s important that I know it pretty well myself.  I think I’ll be able to save a good bit of money as well, since the company would be paying for basically all my expenses.  I’ll just have to find a storage space to dump my stuff and rent a furnished place in Taipei.  It’s still quite scary though.  I keep forgetting that I’m a very specialized person (and so are most my friends) in the states.  We’re Asian-americans that fit well in asian-american groups, but move us into a society where those people don’t really exist and we’re kinda lost.  Like when I was in Sweden, I tried hanging out with chinese people, but they were all either fobs or chinese-swedish!  Totally different than the type of people we’re used to.  So I really felt out of place, and I kinda feel that way here in Taipei too (I’m writing this in Taipei right now).  I think this is a good opportunity for me to reach way out of my comfort zone and at the same time learn my first language more intimately.  Sooooo, next time you’re in Taiwan, give me a ring and I’ll show you where to eat some awesome tsiao long boaw

turkey trot 2007 - me, lucy, alex, and angela went downtown this morning to run the 8-mile turkey trot.  fun stuff, tired as hell though.  i think 8 miles was a good distance to go for the little training we've had, so in a couple of months i think a half marathon is possible.  hopefully.  anyways, i hope i get my chip time from them soon, it should have been around 10 min/mile or maybe slightly above that.  ok time to pass out.

bye bye ignition - so today was a not-so-good-day at ignition.  turns out the company is shutting down, which means everybody is off looking for jobs now.  yup, gone, kaput.  so here's the story:  three years ago (during my first internship with ignition) the company was in trouble, there wasn't much design work to be done in dallas and the company was losing money.  the principles scrambled to find some way to get us out of the red, and they found radioshack.  so the best option was to let radioshack buy the company so we can be their internal design staff, working on all of their redesigns but also doing our own client work as well.  so in theory this was great, radioshack was struggling in terms of the design of their products and their store, and we were a firm that could provide a nice refresh to their cramped and dated style.  this was much harder than we thought.  their company was so stuffy and old that they just would not accept change, with every concept we threw at them being rejected before it got close to becoming reality.  so lately radioshack hasnt been doing very well, and decided that ignition is too expensive to keep on as a permanent design firm.  doug, the president of ignition, decides that the best thing to do is buy back the company so things could go on the way it did before the shack came along.  but radioshack didnt let that happen.  after four months of trying to negotiate terms with the purchase, the contract fell through, and they decided to shut everything down and liquidate the assets.  so that's it, the end of ignition.  i think i might have a few weeks left at the company before they'll have to let me go, so i'm scrambling to get my portfolio ready for interviews.  it's a sad day, but it feels really refreshing for some reason.  i really dunno what's going to happen from here on out, but i know everything's gonna work out for the best.  i'm one of the luckier ones that have already been preparing to leave the company, so i'm in a good place.  i live with preston's family, so i dont have a lease contract that's sucking away my savings.  things'll turn out well, but it'd be nice if you guys could pray about it for me.  sooooo...i'm probably gonna sleep in tomorrow and show up late for work :)  maybe play some ping pong and then work on my portfolio. g'night.

gettin' fit - ok so me alex and lucy have been on a hardcore (for some not so hardcore) exercise regime for the past month or so.  monday wednesday fridays we go out right after work and run our butts off on various trails around plano.  it's been really awesome, i'm pretty sure i won't see a difference in my physique anytime soon but it feels really good just to do something with my body.  tuesdays thursdays and saturdays i've been going to the local rec center to do weights.  i have a new goal now.  since i might be interviewing soon, i need to start looking as good as possible because good looking people get hired more easily, no?  i doubt there's any statistics on that but i'm sure beautiful people have at least a tiny advantage over unbeautiful people with the same qualifications.  SO, there is some rationale behind my fervent exercising.  i'm also training to do a half marathon by december...which may or may not be ambitious...i don't really know cuz i've never done anything near that long before.  hopefully by thanksgiving's 8-mile turkey trot i'll know if i'm capable of something like a half.  i'm slowly catching up (you know who you are)!  well, maybe not catching up but more following in your footsteps.  so until we start doing runs that are impressive i'll refrain from posting how far we've been running lately.  that's it! bye.

dont forget to protect those nips
