A Harsh Reality

In preparation for my ministry at U of M, one of the things I am doing is letting people know the overwhelming need for Christ at The University of Michigan. As I've explored what students at U of M believe, it's been both depressing and encouraging (if that makes any sense).

Here's a snip-bit of an article published in our campus newspaper, The Michigan Daily.

"Sex, God, and Terrorism" - Toby Mitchell 3/28/2007
"Every year thousands of new students at the University face a terrible choice. They can either keep the childhood faith that has given them consolation and meaning in the past or they can abandon it and join the world of mature, rational thinkers to whom religious belief is naive at best."

In reading Toby's article, it became increasingly obvious that Toby is not a Christian and equates Christianity (or any faith for that matter) to immaturity and irrationality. It appears that Tody believes that faith in Christ only has purpose to give comfort and a sense of identity to those naive enough to endulge in it.

...Of all the remarks I've heard towards Christianity, this is one of the kindest. That's how hostile some seem to be towards God.

Also, food for thought: Who's teaching my child?

According to studies by the University of California at Los Angeles and Harvard Divinity School, a full 36 percent of professors at elite universities are atheists.

What an exciting time of life!

Hello! I just want to update you all really quickly on where my life is at right now. I'm currently in Winter Park (Orlando), Florida at my New Staff Training. I've been here for 2 weeks now, and have 4+ to go. I'm really loving it! Right now I'm smack dab in the middle of 2 weeks of intensive seminary courses, so I'm realllly busy.

I'm taking "Intro to Christian Theology" and "Bible Study Methods" right now, (getting credit from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago, so that's sweeet), and I'll start "New Testament Survey" when I leave here (I'll be doing it from home for the next couple of months). Other than that, the Training has been packed with Vision planting and information about what Crusade is, and how it functions. We had a really fun day learning about Financial Policy and Recordkeeping!!! This week is more classes, next week exams and more information, the week after is MPD (Ministry Partner Development), then I am commissioned and sent off! Phew!

Oh yea, just one other thing: I'M ENGAGED!!!

Yep! Kyle proposed just four days before I left for New Staff Training. It was an amazingly romantic proposal and we had a lot of fun running around looking for a place and date before I left! We'll be getting married May 16, 2009!

Whoops, I gotta jet, I'm running late for my 8am class!!!

Encouraging one another

Hello all!

My prayer for this web-log is that it would further enable us to be partners in ministry. I pray that it would enhance communication between us, and therefore really make you feel like you are on campus with me.

Your faith has already been such an encouragement to me. I can't begin to express my excitement and gratitude to the Lord, for He has called each one of you to be a part of what he is doing at U of M. And each one of you has faithfully responded to His challenge. I feel so blessed to be the vessel for your faith and His work.

So with all that said, this web-log will hopefully be a place of encouragement.

Romans 1:12
that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith.

Once I come back from my New Staff Training (July 22), I will start monthly mailed prayer letters (this website will not replace that). What prayer letters are limited to do, hopefully this blog will be able to do. (Pictures, expanded stories, etc.) I don't anticipate ever sending you mass emails at any time. So please keep this URL in a safe place or saved in your bookmarks. It is yours to enjoy! And feel free to comment!

If you ever need to contact me: ashley.wynne@uscm.org (uscm stands for US Campus Ministries - it is the division of Crusade I work for)

Take care & God bless!

Pictures!

A lot of you have expressed interest in seeing pictures of me doing things on campus with Crusade. So, here are a couple that should definitely help you get an idea of some things I do!

DSC00157

^ This is a picture of Michigan's GreekCru (The Bible Study I led for students in the Greek system) at our annual Crusade Greek Conference last year. The conference is every year in Indianapolis, and all Greek students from all schools in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois are invited. It's a lot of fun and we have a blast every year! God always does awesome things in the hearts of the Greeks.

greek cru girls

^ These are the GreekCru girls at our Christmas Party last year. We made ice cream sundaes for the guys and played our favorite game "4 on a couch." May I add that the girls always win??

group spring retreat

This year, the students in the Cru movement at Michigan planned a Spring Retreat. We went to Hillsdale county and did all sorts of maintenance work for a youth ministry there. The county really battles teenage pregnancy and drug use, and the youth ministry has done a great service to the county by giving the students things to do (concerts, alcohol-free parties, scavenger hunts), tutors on how to apply to college, and shares the gospel with everyone. We helped them clean up their buildings and encouraged them in their ministry a lot. It was a great experience for us to share together! This is us on the front steps of their transformed church/youth center.

These are most of the graduating seniors of 2008. We were honored at the last Cru weekly meeting of the year. (That's me on the left hand side, holding the microphone). The cool thing was to hear where God is calling everyone after graduation!

painting spring retreat

This is me painting a corner of the youth center's basement. It was so much cleaner looking when we got done! And it helped the youth ministers focus more on reaching students instead of maintaining the building.

mopping steps

That's me and a friend, Kathryn, cleaning the front steps of the youth center after a can of stain spilled all over them, OPPS!

talking espanol

This is a good example of one of Crusade's methods of evangelism. (This is me in Miami during spring break my sophomore year. We helped Miami college campuses start Crusade movements by meeting Christians and non-Christians on campus, getting to know them, inviting them into Crusade, and shared the gospel when we got the chance.) This is me talking in spanish to a spanish-speaking student on campus. (She spoke english too, but when she heard I spoke spanish, she was eager to help me learn ) This is one of Crusade's methods of evangelism: one-on-one relationship building and discipleship. As a student, I got to do this about 3-4 times a week. As a staff member, it will be a huge part of what I do on campus.
