A few weeks ago the University of Southern California played their
first football game of the season against Idaho, and not too long after
the game started USC had already scored their first touchdown. As the
players got in formation to set up for the extra-point, no kicker was
present. As fans took notice of the missing man formation, some people
began to point it out as if USC was making a huge mistake. As the
seconds passed, many in the crowd who were confused found themselves
silent and choked-up. USC players remained positioned in formation
until the referee threw a flag to call a delay of game penalty. 5 yards
was pushed back in honor of Mario Danelo, USC's kicker who during the
off-season tragically fell to his death off a cliff in California. The
missing man formation was an unexpected tribute/symbol (if you will) to honor him.
