on the learning process

time and time again i am reminded that learning just takes time.

the process is key in uncovering new things - some times they are actually the stuff we already know but filtered through newer experiences.

did some satriani and vai left hand exercises that were really cool. i kinda dig vai's practice routine article in some old issues of guitar world. very cool to read! i am also reminded of how much harder some of these were when i first started playing years ago. some are still very challenging. i like how he incorporates jamming/writing and ear training as part of his practice routine. sure makes it very creative!

till the next blog post...

cheers,
az

on travels and music

went to boston last week for a few shows and it was pretty fun to visit the city after moving to the bay area. i managed to meet up with a few friends and some of my teachers. it was pretty cool to check out the library as well. i'm currently exploring gipsy swing and found some good resources there. am thinking about taking some gypsy jazz lessons - might do that at some point. found out about a few cool teacher/performers who specialize in the style who stay in SF.

in other news, went for a short day trip today to santa cruz which is about two hours south from berkeley. went to the beach and have a day out in the sun. it was a beautiful day.

music wise have been working on a lot right hand technique - particularly on scale work, inspired by some flamenco i've been listening to. i also recently received a copy of my TV interview in san francisco which was really awesome - had a great time talking about music. i'll post some clips on youtube at some point.

haven't blogged in ages i realized but that really means that i've been working on a lot of guitar.

other interesting discoveries:

- read chuck palahniuk's book rant is uber amazing. to me, it's his best work since fight club.
- read one philip roth book - exit ghost, i liked it a lot but it took a while to get used to his style and references. very good stuff.
- listened to a lot of tomatito, all the albums i've heard are very good. great time feel and playing.
- took two flamenco guitar private lessons with david mclean, am looking forward to more when he gets back from spain in a few weeks. it's really challenging but i love the sound of it.
- found out that joe satriani stays in the bay area. i don't know where, but he's touring now anyhow. also, a friend of mine teaches at the same school joe's drummer teaches/designed the drum program. i thought that was kinda cool. now if only i could bump into joe at a street corner or something.. haha.

in good news, i received a scholarship letter from san jose state university for the fall semester. am finalizing details but i'll be going there in a few months to do my masters degree in jazz performance. will be studying with rick vandivier who is an awesome guitar player.

have tons of photos - uploading them in the next post.

cheers!
