Chapter Two: Escaped Royalty
Another day in Ecihgo. The Seaside port was filled with the smell of the salty ocean. Murasaki and Akina were traveling around the port looking for a place to stay.
“God damn, this place has like no inns!” I complained. Akina and I looked around the port for an inn. We finally found one, but it was crappy. Oh well.
“You’re gonna make me sleep there!” Akina yelled pointing at the old inn.
“Hey girl, I saved you, the least you could do it Shut Up!”
*SLAP. She gave me a right hand. I stood there with a handprint on my face. I was dumbfounded.
“Is this how you treat a girl! Probably that’s why you don’t have a girlfriend,” She said with mockery. So I took her by the arm and said.
“You probably don’t remember me, but I used to know you.” I explained. I looked her in the eyes and she stared back.
“Well you do look kinda familiar.” She said responding to my daze. She looked away and walked into the inn.
“Wow, my charm really does work,” I said with a quick laugh. The innkeeper stepped out to greet us.
“Welcome to our Inn, we hope you enjoy your stay here,”
“Why is it so cheap here?” I asked. He looked at the ground for a second and spoke. “Well, it hasn’t been real good around these parts. Pirates come to collect taxes and customers never sow up because of that problem. They would kill any rebels that stood up to them; even the magistrate ignores this problem.”
“They come to get taxes for what?” Akina questioned.
“Well they told us they would protect us and that they would come and collect fees every month. And it’s almost the end of June, and I don’t even have half of what they collect from me,”
“That’s why this place is so empty, they are afraid of the pirates, so they left.” Akina said.
“Yes, some tried to run, but were hunted down by the pirates of died of starvation.” He answered. We sat at the wooden table and talked for an hour about the pirates. It was getting late and Akina looked tired, so I helped her to her room.
“She looks tired, you should get some rest also,” The old innkeeper said. He took his lantern and went back to his room. I left Akina’s room after five minutes or so. Since I had a lot of cash with me I decided to help out the old man. I when to his room and opened the door. He wasn’t there.
I looked around and just thought that he went outside for some fresh air. So I left enough for him to pay the pirates for another 4 months. Then I went back to Akina’s room and laid on the ground. I couldn’t sleep. I was thinking about who gave my classmates the potion. It’s been real strange.
The next morning I was still awake thinking. Akina began to awake.
“Your up already?” She asked still half asleep. She rubbed her eyes and stood up to stretch.
“I couldn’t sleep,” I told her. “I was up all night thinking.”
“About what?” She asked.
“Nothing.” I got up and opened the screen door. I walked down the stairs and Akina dragged behind.
“Oh, your up already?” the Innkeeper asked. “ I’ve made some rice balls, dumplings and sake for you.
“Rice Balls! Yay!” Akina cheered. She rushed over to sit down.
“Wait, go wash your face first,” I nagged to Akina. She put on a long face and when to the back where the well was. I followed behind to wash my face. The water was refreshing. It was cold because of the morning air. We went back into the main room and the Innkeeper brought out the food. He poured Akina a cup of sake.
“No thanks,” I told him as he began to fill my cup. “ I prefer jasmine tea.”
“Alright then, I’ll go and fetch some tea.” He hurried to the kitchen. I picked up a rice ball and examined it. Then I took a bite. It was quite good. I had three rice balls and 2 dumpling sticks. After a short while after we ate, we heard loud shouting outside. I went outside to see what was going on.
“Burn this place to the ground! Leave no one alive!” Someone shouted. Pirates were raiding the port. They rushed of their ships and docked. Some had pikes others had swords. They ran towards the mainland.
“This is our territory now!” The head pirate shouted. They ran all over the port. People were running about and screaming. I went in to grab my armor and swords. I went in to the stable to get Mitsuko. I saddled him and rode out into the port. Akina followed behind on Keiko.
The pirates were attacking the naval guard officers. They hurt the first one and the other one had lost his left arm. I raced over and stopped the pirate’s spear from striking the officer.
“Who the hell are you?!” The pirate asked. He called over more men and surrounded me.
“Kill him!” Another pirate yelled. They charged at me from different sides. Mitsuko stomped the one in front and I cut down two from the sides. Another came from behind and Mitsuko kicked him in the stomach and he flew across the ground. 3 other pirates tried to attack Akina. I took my tanto out and flung it at one pirate. Mitsuko stomped over another one.
“You alright there?” I asked Akina with concern. She nodded and I dismounted and tied my reigns with her reigns I told Mitsuko to take her back to the Inn. He raced off with Keiko and Akina. I took my tanto from the pirates back and tucked it in my case. I fought off the pirates trying to chase Akina. I killed about 33 of them before I saw a mysterious man leading a young woman. I thought he was a pirate and had captured her so I attacked him. He picked up a pike and we fought.
His stance was confusing, it was a new one I had not seen before. Then I figured out he used Chinese fighting styles. He stabbed at me and I dodged and cut the end of his pike off. Just then I saw a familiar face, it was my old friend Monica! She was the young woman that he was leading. I kicked him and he slide backwards.
“Stop!” I yelled to him. He looked at me confused. He had a long ponytail that was braided.
“Why do you attack me and Princess Xiao Chi?” He questioned. He stood in front of Monica. She looked at me. Pirates ran around us and circled us.
“You dare escape from my ship!” The head pirate yelled. It seemed he was talking to Monica and the man she was with. The pirates stood there waving their weapons. I charged at 3 and took them down.
“What the hell!” Another pirate yelled. One tried to get behind and slash me but I elbowed him in the nose and he fell to the ground.
“Come on this way!” I told Monica and the man. They followed me back to the Inn. I had the old man make some dumplings and rice balls for them. They enjoyed them.
“So, why did you save us?” The man asked me.
“Because I attacked you on accident.” I said laughing. “ And I’m sorry for that, so I had to do something.” I lied. Yup, it was Monica alright.
“Well, it’s hard to get help from anyone around here since we don’t know anyone.” Monica started. “You see, we come from China, of the Shu Province. We were escaping the Mongols that invaded our province. Leu Bei, the master of Shu is still fighting against the Mongols. He had a ship built so we could escape. Then one day, pirates attacked us. We lost most of our men. Lei Bei’s general that escorted us, Zhou Yun was captured by another ship. These pirates took us to this port. That’s how we got here.” She explained.
“I thought you were a pirate,” I explained to Sheng, Monica’s bodyguard.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I haven’t told you my name. It’s Xiao Chi Shen,” She said.
“Princess Xiao Chi Shen,” Sheng corrected.
“Oh yes, this is Sheng Luang. One of the imperial guards in the Shu province. He is my bodyguard or as I say, my friend.” She explained.
“Oh I see,” Akina said, still staring at Sheng. I think she was crushing on Sheng. I grabbed her ear and took her to the room.
“Excuse us,” I said. We walked back into the room.
“Looks like someone is crushing,” I said, mocking Akina.
“Huh?! what are you talking about?” She exclaimed. Her eyes were wide open.
“HAHAHHAH!” I laughed. “Oh I see.” We went back outside and sat down at the table.
There was more shouting outside. Sheng and I went out to see what was going on. There were a group of pirates raiding the other pirates ship. They look like they were rivals or enemies. I picked up my Musashi and tanto and rushed towards the docks. Sheng came with me.
“What the hell are you doing to our ship!” I pirate demanded to know.
“You don’t deserve to sail these seas, you are weak.” The rival pirates responded.
“Just because we are low rank pirates doesn’t mean you first class bastards can raid our ships and kill our men,” The pirate said rushing towards his ship. The other pirates followed him waving their weapons.
BOOM!, the pirate on the ship stood with a musket that had smoke flaring from the end. He had shot the pirates down.
“Ah…where, did you get muskets?” the pirate that was shot asked. He was wounded badly and was holding on his wound.
“Muskets?” Sheng exclaimed. “But those are the same ones from our ship.”
“You brought muskets?” I asked him.
“We were gonna get rid of them until the pirates captured us. They must have taken the muskets.” Sheng explained. “Hey you!”
“What?! Ahh, it’s the Chinaman from the ship we raided a few days ago. So you escaped from the weakling’s ship?” He said staring at Sheng. “ You killed many of my good pirates. So in return I’m going to take the girl you were with.”
“Don’t even think of touching her!” I yelled at the pirate. He looked at me.
“And who’s this? A samurai? No matter you all shall die today,” He said. “Alright, first crew mates attack!” He commanded. About twenty pirates came from the ship with spears and broad swords. Three had muskets aimed. I jumped out of the way and kick Sheng away from the shot. He ran towards the musketeers and kicked their muskets into the bay. He had picked up a wooden pole on the way and wacked all three at the same time.
The other pirates came at me with their weapons ready. I swiftly stepped aside and cut down 6 of them. Both Sheng and I beat down the other 11.
“What? They managed to take down 20 of my best men? And throw away my three muskets without being harmed? Looks like I have to take you down myself.” He said with confidence. “ Muskets weren’t the only things we took from your ship, we have captured Zhou Yun, Lei Bei’s trusted general.” He said. “ Bring the young general out!” He commanded. Three pirates came out tugging a rope that was tied around a man that looked twenty out. They made him kneel. He looked like he was beaten badly and the wounds weren’t treated.
“Hand me his spear,” the pirate demanded. “Ah, so this is the Dragon Spear.”
He held the spear out and spun it. “ Come and get it.”
Sheng rushed towards the ship. He fought every pirate that stood in his way. I followed behind and took out the leftovers. We boarded the ship and knocked the other pirates overboard. The lead pirate fought with us. He swung the spear and jabbed at Sheng. He dodged it and wacked the pirate on the head. The pirate stepped back and attacked again. He took all the blows we gave him.
“This is not working,” I said. “I’ll finish him and you get Zhou Yun,” I told Sheng. He worked his way around the lead pirate. The pirates that were guarding Zhou Yun jumped over board because Sheng terrified them.
“So it’s just you?” The lead pirate asked. “Well, my name is Captain Sazare, leader of the Sado Pirates and a general to the great Daimyo Edoyama.” He proclaimed.
“Well I am Murasaki Kenshin, Lone samurai and one of Mitsurugi Kenshin’s Students.” I said proudly.
“Then a fight we shall have to death.” He said.
“One question, who’s this Edoyama you talk of?” I asked. He charged at me with the spear.
“You must defeat me then I’ll shall tell you!” he jabbed the spear my way and I dodged it. I blocked his second blow with my sword and kicked his third blow away. He spun the spear above his head and with all his strength, he stuck downwards and I had to roll to the side to avoid it. He slashed the end of the spear to the side and I jumped up and did I spin kick to his face. He regained his strength and charged me. I wasn’t quick enough.
He had dug his spear into my right arm. It wasn’t bad, but it still hurt. I grabbed his spear and yanked it out of his hand. I took out my tanto and stabbed him in the stomach. I dug the blade into his flesh. The blood spilled on the deck and from his mouth. He fell to the ground. I pulled the spear out of my arm and wrapped it with a piece of cloth. I picked up the spear and walked over to Sheng and Zhou Yun.
“I think this belongs to you,” I said, handing the spear to Zhou Yun. We went back to the Inn to find that the place had been raided. I searched the rooms for Akina and Princess Xiao Chi. They were nowhere to be found, either was the innkeeper.
“The damn innkeeper tricked us!” I yelled. I slammed my fist on the table. There was a note on the table.
“You say bring all your weapons and cash to Sado in exchange for the two women that we have captured”
“Sado? That’s an island not so far from here.” I said.
“But we’ll need a ship to get there.” Sheng said. We went out to search the port. A ship had just sailed in and docked. I strange man came fro the ship. He wore shiny armor, a knight, I thought. Then I say his face more clearly, it was another one of my classmates, Jimmy.
Next time: Jimmy helps them to get to Sado and rescue Akina and Xiao Chi. Tune in next time and read.
