Mike's First VideoBlog: Pacific Coast Highway

Mike's First VideoBlog:

Saturday, February 18th, 2006

Click the Play Button.

The impetus for the MikeVideo WhenWordsCollide VideoBlog series, of which this is the first "episode", came when I discovered YouTube last month, and I mentioned in a previous blog article which included one of the Internet Movies featured on YouTube that I would eventually do a video blog for this site. Here it is. I recorded this all earlier today on Pacific Coast Highway in Lomita, Wilmington, and Torrance. Seen in order are the Torrance airport, PCH shot from a parking lot next to Crenshaw Blvd in Torrance, Lake Marchado in Harbor City, The Banning House in Wilmington, and a short drive down PCH through Harbor City and Lomita. I accomplished the driving shot at the end by balancing the camera on the visor of the convertible. I set all the controls before making the right turn on to PCH, so there was no chance of me rear ending another motorist because I was looking at the view finder instead of the road. This was test footage for the good stuff, when I mount the camera on the front of the car and take a drive up the coast. Enjoy!  This took about three hours to assemble, and is much more than just another video blog, based on some of the ones I've seen. I use music by Jethro Tull and The Mamas and the Papas.

Dear Mike,
That was so much fun! It made me laugh, and I was super impressed w/ the editing. I especially liked the ending driving shot because I always enjoy scoping out places on the side like that and imagining the many lives that are going on there...and from what I remember about L.A., it's miles upon miles of lots of daydreaming that way. You would appreciate this story: Once when I was a kid my parents had a theatre company in Colorado. While my parents and I were driving on the freeway in L.A. we came upon a split in the freeway (forgive me for not knowing the technical term...)and as I looked out the window from the back seat of our chevette I saw a woman who had been in the theatre company in Colorado with us six months before veering off into the other lane...she was right next to us for a split second and had to look at our car too, to make sure she didn't wreck...and she recognized us too, and waved frantically. It was a very odd moment... I mean what are the chances??? Miriam

Hi Mike.  I enjoyed the video blog.  The resolution was quite good.  My YouTube movies are always a little fuzzy.  Anyways, it was great that you added California Dreaming to the mix.  It was such a cool irony for those gray clouds.  I was experiencing the same thing in Rosemead.  In the morning, I too was impressed by those nice clouds and then the weather gave way to rain.

Loved your vedioblog!!!!! Love PCH!
The sign on PCH "Typewriter Center" was funny to see! Do they still have typwriters? I remember pounding one portable royale for school reports and papers.

Great vedioblaog!

Hi Mike!!!

I loved that; it was so much fun to watch!!!!!  What a great job you did putting it all together, with the music, etc.  I assume that the camera DID fall just after you said it would likely in the one part?  I didn't know about Ca.'s alligator! I like how the parks seem to have regular trees AND palm trees! :)  Nice green grass....ahhhh!  Ours of course is all dead at present in this cold.  I can't wait to see when you do your next video.  I believe you said it would be driving up to the coast?  It is bitter cold here today--- Brrrrr!  2 degrees with the wind chill.  Oh how I dislike NY winters.

Happy Sunday to you!

Wow if that was your first attempt then you are even more talented than I had first thought.  Thanks for sharing with us.  I needed a laugh tonight.  Thanks for the critique of the poems.  I value your comments so much and I mean that.  You are very right about the first one.  I actually wrote it when I was sixteen and would like to think that I have grown a bit as a poet.  Sometimes I wonder though.

Hope you have a great week.

Hey Mike! Thanks for stopping by, havent seen you in a while. How have you been? Looks like you've been buisy video taping! Great fun This is a cool idea, I am going to tell my husband about that place, he likes to video tape stuff. Get that parade you showed us pics of next year, that would make a great video! I love the ones on roller coasters lol. Although if the 'drive up the coast' has some hills, that would be good too!
Check ya later,
~Mia

Neat video! You must've put in a lot of time and effort into that. Were you driving and videotaping at the same time? That takes talent! :giggle:

hey Mr. Mike,

I want to appologize for not visiting as much. I barely have time to get on the computer to do anything else, but school work. However, I truly enjoyed your video this morning. It made my day. I hope you have a wonderful day. Enjoy your week and if I don't make it back over here; have a great weekend.

Peace out and take care.

Hi Mike,

What a great idea these video blogs are! :coolman: a while ago someone else in Xanga videoed his young son running to meet him at the airport. It was just wonderful. He also included their day out on a boat, watching whales. You've done a good job with yours. I'd love to do this too, but will have to learn a lot more before I can do it properly.

Yes, "Big Wednesday" was a fantastic movie in so many ways. We mosty go to the threatre if we can find cheap deals in the newspaper for tickets. It's mainly $15 each to visit the movies here now! The ads do annoy me there too, but I suppose they are paying "big bucks" for having their business up on the screen. I spoke to a person a while ago at work, who said he'd paid something like $30,000 to have theatre advertising for his business!! Having a home theatre would be wonderful, but very costly as you've said.

Thanks for taking me along for the ride. :sunny: The mood was perfect for a laid back cruise with California Dreamin'. I haven't been out of my house for 6 months so I would go completely nutso  without the internet and phone.  It was nice to hear your voice too.:)

My goodness, Mike, you just crack me up!  You're such a trip.  I have to know (if you don't mind telling me) what video editing software do you use?  (I work with Adobe Premiere..whether that is a good choice or not I'm still unsure...).  Loved the part when the camera fell off the dashboard.
