| welp. here i am with two of my favorite sisters. sitting outside my house. it's such a pleasant evening. the stars are out. the moon is high. the air is calm. the mosquitoes are not so very bad. the bench is comfy..(sorta) ... the house is locked. BUT! the garage was open. as was the pineapple, the juice, the cookies, and ... well.... the cake. briefly. *sniff* oh the cake. we shall mourn its passing. and no, we did not eat it. alas. it died a tragic death .. with a stake through the heart! ... ok not really. but it did get squish-ed on the garage floor. there may or may not have been a slight mishap with a certain ten-year-old who was trying to transport it. we will never know. what we *do* know is that it is a huge mess to clean up cake and broken cake dish on a garage floor with your fingers. but it's all good. but you can't lick your fingers, due to glass.
so far we have learned: The turkey didn't eat Mr. Bean Juice is good out of a bottle Pineapple is best fresh out of the can You can eat Italian Ice with your fingers and lips only Always get the macaroni that have free snacks attached to the box. like oreos. then leave the macaroni in the garage pantry. Always carry your computer and plug for quick and easy entertainment Never eat "freezerburnt" ice cream sandwiches. even though they look good, they taste nasty When mom says she wants to run down the battery on the camera, stop her. you never know when it would be really fun to have a fully-charged video camera on hand. Never let Grace steal your food. you'll never see it again. All spit is created equal when you're drinking from the same juice bottle Its ok to sit out late at night and pass around the bottle of the ...uh.. "fruit of the vine" Even Nancy Drew is a little scary while sitting ouside in the dark (but we learned from Nancy that bad guys get hungry too) When we have a party on the front porch Jackson will go to great lengths to join in "Chocolate Dog" is not a nice smell at all A mosquito in the throat and nose is not pleasant
ok we want to get back to our movie now. more updates later perhaps. :) tata!
| Well.... it has come to my attention that i have gotten woefully behind in keeping up with this thing. Alas for school and such getting in the way of posting. But i have no such excuse now, and with Christmas break now wonderfully here, i suppose i can take a few minutes and catch up on everything i *should* have been posting about the last few months.
First off... somehow i missed the birthdays of two of my favorite siblings. (ok so i didn't "miss" them, per se, but i didn't post anything about them! ) also.. i know i shouldn't pick favorites, but, well... sorry. i did. first up: my favorite brother. Joel turned 17 back in september and got to experience for the first time the joys of going to school on one's birthday. He just last week finished his first semester in college and represented the Ascol name well, as i hear. i got to talk to one of his professors a couple weeks ago (she was also one of my favorite professors way back in the day...) and to quote her, he "is very different from you girls...." LOL no kidding!! But we love him anyway. Seriously though, he is one of the kindest and most thoughtful guys i know. he's always looking out for ways to help others and doesn't think he's too "cool" to carry his sisters' bags or hold a screaming baby. i love him to death and i'm so glad God gave him to this overloaded-with-females family.
Next up: my favorite older sister. We've been going through a lot of old videos recently, working on a family video project, and i am constantly amused to see my relationship with Sarah "back then" as compared to now. Some things have changed a lot ... i'm much bigger than her now, and she no longer offers me a helping shove when it's time to take a bow at the end of one of her productions, or tricks me into giving up the microphone. (hmmm... are those things related? ) ... some things have not changed, however ... i'm still IN those productions of hers, (but i ma nage to take my own bows ) and we still sing together (though i now eagerly give up the mic to her amazing vocals), and she's still my first best friend. i'm repeatedly amazed by how much Sarah manages to take on and accomplish all the time. She's one of the busiest people i know, yet she still manages to get everything done excellently and makes time to be with her family and friends. i (re)discovered this last semester how UNfun it is to be in the same writing-intensive class with her. Actually, it was a blast. Sure, she got her papers done far before i did, with much better results, but i enjoyed being associated with her ("hey prof-- you know that 100% paper you just gave back? did i mention that was my sister?.... brownie points ... please?") i'm so excited to see what God has been doing in her life and can't wait to see what He will do next. I love her so much and quite literally have no idea what i would do without her.
ok... a Christmas break post wouldn't be complete without a word about school. and boy, do i have a few choice words. There were many days this semester when i wasn't sure i was even going to pass some of the classes i was taking. i learned several important things though:
- Vault and BBQ chips are the best fuel to get through a 3-hour physics class
- When there's no way to get out of the required freshman-level music lit class, you might as well just sit in the back and talk online during the lectures
- Seeing a friend's smiling face in the middle of a totally packed and stressful day on campus can brighten that day like nothing else
- It's not a very good idea to be in charge of the titration for your lab group when you've only had an hour of sleep and a Java Chip
- However, if you're GOING to be in charge of the above titration, it's good to be sure the tip of your buret is securely fastened to the cylinder so that the acid inside does not spill everywhere
- Some people don't care if the final IS open book/open notes ... they'll still cheat
- A 20-minute nap- in the car, in the library, or on a bench outside - can go a long way to fueling the rest of the day
- Required concerts are generally no fun ... unless you can sit with a friend and laugh through them.
- It doesn't matter if your team *does* lose by 20+ points.... if you get to sing the debut of the brand-new fight song with blue and green streaked sparkly hair, it was a good game
- Helping a bunch of younger brothers with their chemistry homework is a whole lot more fun than doing your own
- If you shake badly enough while performing in front of people, your piano teacher will try to drug you
- It's not a good idea to drive away from school with your physics book on the top of your car
- It IS a good idea to bring your calculator to your chemistry test
- If you're going to hang out and talk and be late for choir in doing so, it's probably best NOT to hang out and talk right in the lobby of the music modular
- God is just as much in control when your car breaks down and you get to
school with 15 minutes to take a test, as when you get a B+ on the test
you could've sworn you failed
- A choir full of uncoordinated clapping-challenged music majors *can* learn to clap in snych ... it just takes a while
- Although not recommended, it is possible to write a final term paper in the hour and a half before it's due
- Leading the choir is harder than it sounds. ... but not so bad when you're used to dealing with a room full of middle schoolers every wednesday night
- The way to measure how long a bow after a performance should last is this: bow. look at your shoes. ask yourself "did i tie my shoes?" answer yourself "yes i tied my shoes." then, and ONLY then, can you come up from your bow.
- While practicing your bow it is acceptable to say these things outloud. For some reason this is not acceptable in an actual performance.
- People look at you funny when you wear your rollerblades into class
- There are few things more inspirational and challenging than rooming with a nursing student who just won't quit
- In Iran, my name is pronounced "RAH-bekah"
- Physics can ruin your life. Instead of just watching the kid you're babysitting roll down the driveway in his little car, you'll wonder what angle the driveway has in respect to the ground in order to give the car such acceleration
- My bookbag really *is* waterproof!
- The green Vault tastes better than the red. But sometimes it's good to get the red kind just to mix things up a bit
- When you're tired enough, it just doesn't matter if you're wearing a "business casual" suit with sneakers and a giant hoodie
- Although doing homework during recital class is thought of as "good time management" by several music majors, it is, in fact, frowned upon by most professors
- "Welcome to Mooooooe's!" is one of the best things you can hear at the end of a school day
- It is, in fact, possible to fail a test to the glory of God
- Trying to tell a herd of nursing students that the classroom they want to get into will be open in just a few minutes is an exercise in futility
- Contrary to popular belief, being nice to the baristas does *not* always mean you'll get a good frappuccino
- Hearing your sisters talk about subjects whose names you can hardly pronounce (like "epistemology" and "pathophysiology") suddenly makes physics and chemistry seem not so bad
- Half of doing well in a piano jury is just looking good
- It's ok to step out of class to make a phone call, especially if you're calling your mom because you just need to cry
- It is very difficult to play arpeggios with a brownie in one hand
There are many many more things i've learned ... but as some of you know, this post is now three days in the making, and i think it's time to just go ahead and publish it. Let me close with the most significant thing i've learned this semester - my Heavenly Father is faithful and working out every single event in my life for His glory and my absolute best. He has been orchestrating every moment of these crazy last few months, and i know that He will continue to be with me, no matter what else happens.
OK ... Lord willing it will not be another several months before i post again. ... we'll see i guess.
| It is all mercy! 22 years of God's amazing grace .... who'da thunk it?
__________________________________________________
It is profitable to consider what I deserve,
and what I enjoy, to awaken self abasement,
and gratitude.
If the righteous Lord were to deal with me
according to my deservings, I would at this
moment be under the rack of excruciating pain;
or, under the pressure of most abject poverty;
thus feeling the foretaste of eternal woe.
If thus dealt with in strictest justice, Death
would receive his commission to hurl my
affrighted soul into the gulf of endless
misery, there to remain an everlasting
monument of the vengeance of a holy God.
All short of this is mercy!
Do I enjoy a portion of health?
It is all mercy!
Am I undergoing a sanctified affliction?
It is all mercy!
Do I partake of the bounties of Providence?
It is all mercy!
Do I possess dear, affectionate friends?
It is all mercy!
Do I experience the love of God in Christ,
pardoning my sins, and purifying my heart?
Oh! this is mercy beyond the power
of language to praise or to express!
Rejoice in such a Savior, who snatched
you as a brand out of the burning! (Thomas Reade, 'Christian Meditations')
