Sabotage or rescue??

I did my first screen test yesterday for a presenting job I probably won't get. This morning I walk into the control room to dub the reel onto a DVD for the producer and it's GONE. Deleted. Poof. All deleted items sit in the recycled bin, until further notice. That was deleted from the bin too. My first read wasn't bad, but I stumbled. When I walked back in complaining of the fact that I only had 15 minutes studio time (including learning how to use the prompter, the autocue and applying make-up and hairspray, it was my first time mind you) they sounded sympathetic.

And today, fuming about how my 'demo tape' has been lost to oblivion R* said with a twinkle in his eye "oh well, you'll have to do another one now, won't you?" (No you sick freaks he's about 60, even that's way too old for me). Is someone trying to screw with me at work or are they giving me the leg up?

This place is driving me crazy. It lifts you up and pushes you down, throws you sideways and relentlessly questions you until you think you're about to explode.

That's the news for you.

One day when I have enough energy I will explain it in full. Meanwhile you can ask me any question you like about broadcast news, and I will answer it best I can (within reason).

Sorry

sorry

I give notice that, at the next sitting, I will move:

That today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

We reflect on their past mistreatment.

We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.

The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.

We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.

We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.

For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.

To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.

And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.

We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.

For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.

We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians.

A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again.

A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.

A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed.

A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility.

A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia.

So we lost out on the first apartment, but we got this one instead. Not bad?

Beyond, yonder.

I am in a strange place right now. One that resembles a place of soft sighs and quiet resignations, of defiance and a little hope, of peace.

At this point I could be lumbering into grey limbo forever, but he will be here in two weeks and I am excited (if only mildly, it's as if the remote has put me on mute and dulled my senses). A man is moving halfway across the world, for me. Giving up a lucrative hedgefund career (and picking up a not-so-bad one in Sydney), saying goodbye to all that he holds dear and familiar (except me). And then he will be here.

People have adventures and gallivant around the world, many a terrain has been crossed on foot. But there is no greater terrain to cross, than that of the mind.

Some words that have echoed in my mind recently:

"We shall also do our part to build a world of peace where the weak are safe and the strong are just."
JFK

And so we shall.
