| Ephraim John AndersonI'm not sure anyone reads my xanga but I thought I'd post a picture of the new little guy. He was born Feb. 16, 2008. I can't wait to see him in person. I'm hoping to drive to Lawrence today and stay a week.

| My E-train journeyI know most of you just think I'm crazy but I've had the best time making friends and supporting Elliott's career on Etrainstation.com. I've been a part of that website for a year and a half at least and it's the best group of people you could meet. I'm going to post something, I hope it works. It's our gift to Elliott from the Etrain.

| Christmas times a comin'Hey guys, Time for the annual shopping guidelines post. I just really don't think I can say it any better than this so give it another scan before heading out for the Christmas shopping experience. I'm sure all the hard working service people will appreciate your consideration.
Let's help EVERYONE have a great Holiday Season!!!
Oh, I almost forgot! Everyone needs to buy Elliott Yamins' Christmas album only available at Target. It will put you in the mood! (For Christmas!)
Okay, here we go:
This season I have but one request. Please remember that the person behind the counter ringing your purchases is a person (not a robot without feelings) and has a million other things going on in the background that you (as a person without retail experience) do not have a clue about.
Let me just list a few to inform you:
Did someone decide to quit with no notice or maybe just didn't show up at all? Are they running out of change in their drawer and looking for a good pause to run get more or call someone to get them more? Remember this, everytime you just throw them a twenty because you think it is faster for you they have to give you change back. Example...your total is 10.74. You give a twenty not wanting to dig for the 75 cents. Someones got to take the time grabbing change and it's the clerk ...your change back is 9.26 which they will have to give you one 5 and four 1's plus 26 cents. Giving four ones back with every other transaction goes through their ones at a flying rate. If you had given them 20.75 you'd get a ten and a penny. AND that clerk would of be able to pull that change out of the drawer very quickly rather that pulling the other. One bill and one coin. Did the clerk just have a jerk of a customer? It's hard to tell but the odds are greatly in that favor. Someone complaining about a small dent in the box or asking to use a coupon they forgot to show you BEFORE the sale. Or even (as happened yesterday) returning everything they bought because they saw the sign that said you will receive a $10 off coupon if your sale is over 25 dollars today and they didn't get a coupon because they spent 24.99 before tax and the computer automatically spits one out for every $25. dollars before tax. Truly pissed off. That was a good one.
Don't ever forget what the clerk can control and can't. Don't ask for a discount because it's not the model you want. Don't act all pissy because they ask for your ID for your credit card. It's for your protection and they are REQUIRED to do it.
Also, when they say hello and ask to help just say thanks and smile. Don't ignore them. They are offering to help and they are again REQUIRED to do this. They get in trouble if they DON"T do it. Don't act like they are just retarded. Every customer that walks in the door could be a "secret shopper" and if they get a bad score that is carried ALL the way up to corporate and it's not pleasant to be pointed out as having failed to do job requirements. So just smile and feign kindness if you are offended by this action. Thanks. It's REALLY offensive when people just look right at you and turn their head away like saying "what an idiot slave". (the not a person thing kicks in right then, at least that's how it makes ME feel).
I like helping people find the item they need or helping educate them on what's available for that purpose but please don't act like you DESERVE to be helped before someone else that is asking for my help. I can only help one at a time and I try to make it short and quick and move on to helping someone else but some people....oh well. Just wait your turn. Thanks again.
In short, just smile and don't be in too big of a hurry. If you are in a big hurry DO NOT shop on Saturdays especially between the hours of 10:30am and 4 pm. Actually those hours ANY day are hectic at our store. You WILL probably have to stand in line for a few minutes. No more than walmart or the grocery store though so just chill. We're working as FAST as we can. Believe me.
One last thing....DO NOT even THINK about going shopping the day after Thanksgiving!!!! Stay HOME! I don't care if you have some torturous family ritual. Anybody shopping on that day is a glutton for punishment and deserves to stand in line for hours. The sales are NOT that much better than ANY other day before Christmas. If this is your idea of fun you should be FORCED to work that day in retail every other year for penance. Am I clear? OK.
I personally think that everyone should have to work a year in retail just to live in society as a decent person. Call it training. Puts a whole new spin on living with mankind.
I sound like I should be saying Bah Humbug but really I'm not. I love Christmas and I do love nice people. All I'm saying is show a little compassion EVEN for the lowly retail clerk who's just working to have the insurance. Matter of fact, the clerks usually don't even receive benefits, just the managers.
Oh, and the main reason she might be grumpy....her feet are KILLING her because she is forced to stand all day getting only 30 minutes for lunch and rarely getting to take her 15 min. breaks because they are too swamped by customers and they need her on the sales floor and corporate says they are already spending too much on payroll. Try it some day. Don't even allow yourself to sit for more than 20 minutes maybe twice for 8 to 9 hrs. I'll bet most of you can't even do it. Happy Shopping!!!
