Lynne and I celebrated 62 years of marriage yesterday - 31 for her and 31 for me. She's been married a little longer since she said "I do" before I did. Our trip to Montana was sort of an anniversary trip. The 31st is a special one in the logs of anniversary celebrations. I looked it up and it seems the longer you are married the more expensive gift you are supposed to give your spouse. It goes like this:

Anniversary                     Traditional Gift               Modern (i.e., Retail Marketers') Gift
First year                            Paper                             Clock
Second                               Cotton                            China
Third                                  Leather                           Crystal
Fourth                                Fruit                                Appliances
Fifth                                   Wood                             Silverware
Sixth                                 Candy                              Major Appliances
Seventh                             Wool                                Furniture
Eighth                                Bronze                             HD television
Ninth                                 Pottery                             Plasma screen
Tenth                                 Tin                                   Diamonds
Fifteenth                            Crystal                             Diamonds
Twentieth                          China                                Diamonds
Twenty-fifth                       Silver                                Diamonds
Thirtieth                             Pearl                                 Diamonds
Thirty-first                         Silk                                   Diamonds

I began to see a pattern developing so I stopped reading. I think if  I take Lynne to a baseball game it should fulfill the criteria.

Alex starts his classes at Ft. Lee today and completes his training in about seven weeks. April starts working at Cedarville on Friday and in two months needs to earn $25,000 to pay for her last year of grad school and her wedding. That's a lot of overtime.

Speaking of Montana, we spent five days at Burnt Fork Rance, the home of Randy and Kay Creech. It is a beautiful place in the Bitterroot Valley, south of Missoula. Here's a view of the sunset from our cabin:

Lynne and I did a lot of hiking. P5250027 P5250028

As you can see, it was gorgeous.

Southwest Ohio doesn't quite have the mountains of Southwest Montana.

We'll be at home for the next week and then we're off for a while. I'm working on some writing projects as well as preparing for next year. I'm also saving for next year's anniversary present.

Have a blessed week!

Don't you mean $24,900? You're still helping her out, right?

Happy Anniversary! My mom and dad celebrate 35 in August. It'll be 10 for me and hubby in January (20 by your calculations). Tin is cool.

Happy Anniversary! Sounds like you had a great time in Montana. My husband and I recently celebrated our 1st and we got a dog as a gift to ourselves. A dog is kind of like a clock... she wakes me up every morning (wanting to be let out).

wow.
i love mountains and, well, those really take the cake dont they?

and if april actually DOES make that much money in that short amount of time, i need to take that job. maybe then i could pay off my $16,000 worth of student loans in something LESS than 15 years
(not passing blame--its just a fact of life that stinks a little bit when you want to go to the mission field)

God bless your next 31 years

Dr. Brown I'm so excited that you got to visit my Aunt and Uncle's Ranch.  Isn't it gorgeous.  I hope that you had a very relaxing and enjoyable trip.  Looking at the mountains always reminds me of how amazing our God is to have created such a beautiful world.  Enjoy your summer!

Congratulations Dr. Brown! You and your sweet wife look fantastic in shades. That coupled with the landscape make you both look so young and vibrant, it's almost hard to believe you have been married 31 years (the congratulations were actually for the anniversary, although looking good in shades is a good thing too). I hope you both are enjoying much rest and little worry this summer. You are loved and missed much.

people in china are rather superstitious. to give a clock as a present here means wishing for that person's early death because the word for clock kind of sounds like the word for death. true, indeed.
