We're Bringin' Amish Back!

Bea and I are cleaning up and cleaning out our room. A lot of the stuff we're finding is uninteresting - old binder-fulls of school-work, miscellaneous knickknacks, and countless t-shirts and sweaters from all the clubs, organizations, and teams we've been a part of over the years. But we did find a gem buried in the back of our closet: a pair of prehistoric, Victorian-era dresses. Or would they be closer to something the Amish would wear? Actually, I'm guessing Victorian, 'cause I know that the dresses would be too ornate for real Amish people - all that lace and velvet. But "We're bringing Amish back" rolls off the tongue better!

So what do you guys think?? Personally, I think the look grows on you after awhile ...

Maybe the saddest part of it all is that, in another time and place, my mom used to actually force us to put these on for Easter and Christmas Sundays at church.

Here's Celeste and I reading Grimms Fairy Tales and Alice in Wonderland!

Here we are killing the fattened pig!

And before anyone says anything - I know that real Amish people don't look so happy in pictures and don't smile so big - but we did a few pictures where we didn't smile and I just looked awkward! And let's be realistic: real Amish people wouldn't wear these kinds of dresses anyway! Just roll with it.

P.S. A BIG THANKS goes out to my little sister Celeste - the only sister cool enough to do the Amish photo-shoot with me. Everyone else just thought I was weird. :( And in the end, I had to bribe Celeste to put on the dresses with me: $20 to put it on and let us do her hair in braids (although we later negotiated it down to Ce f'iore). Am I the only one in this house with a sense of humor???

Pros and Cons of Going Amish-style

PROS:
- I wouldn't have to worry about guys hitting on me because I would be a walking advertisement for feminine chastity and modesty in dress (especially if I pair it up with some high-ankle, lace up boots and pantyhose!). It'd be like the Western version of a burqa.
- Mom would never have grounds for saying "Your shirt is kind of low-cut" or "You can't wear that!" Ever. Again.

CONS:
- I'd only have one dress. What'll I wear when I need to do laundry??
- It's a little on the short side (I've gotten a lot taller since the fifth grade!)
- It's made of velvet so it was soooo hot! I was dying.

What do you guys think???

I think I've made a breakthrough!!

Take a good look at this!! This could very well be my first authentic gangster pose!!! Don't I look so G?? (did I use that right?) But in all seriousness - isn't it such a good gangster pose?? The scowl of pure venom, the look of hatred burning the lens with its intensity - ooo I think I SCARE MYSELF! I think the reason I love this picture so much because I don't know if it can be repeated. It might just be a fluke! Beatrice says that this photo is not proof that I can do a gangster pose at all; she thinks it's just a bad candid picture. :(

Maybe the significance of this picture could be conveyed with a little more context. Just a mere month ago - yes, just a month ago, folks! - I was still a gangster-pose newbie. I distinctly remember being at Little Spark's End of the Year Party and having Tricia try to actually coach me on how to look gangster after several failed attempts. Her advice was, "Just look at the camera and imagine the person holding it has KILLED YOUR SISTER. How would you feel??" And I tried to imagine that - I really did! But in the picture immediately following that piece of advice, I just look like I'm about to cry ...

And look here! Look at the difference that even a few seconds can make between gangster and poser! Here's our first take.

:( Look at my contorted face - stuck between a frown and a smile! I think I was realllly on the verge of laughter, but I was trying superhard to hold the pose, so my mouth got confused and my nostrils are flaring from the effort of not laughing! And even my gangster sign ... psh! It looks like a dying peace sign!

These pics are from Lacy Park; a family friend gave us tickets so my family went to go watch the 4th of July fireworks! It was fun! Except Bea was missing 'cause she was working at Coldstone's. She just started working there so I think that's why she got stuck with all the bad shifts. Plus, now I hardly ever see her 'cause she's always working! And when I do want to go bug her visit her, I have to drop $3.69 on a dinky-sized cup of ice cream just to sit there for fifteen minutes and then she's always too busy to talk anyway. :( I wish I could say that her mere presence is worth it for me to spend that much on ice cream but ... (haha j/k you're worth it Bea!)

My family went to go visit her last week but I think we got a little carried away with our desire to document the entire experience, and after we left, her boss kind of scolded her for "socializing" when there was a line. Except she wasn't socializing with us at all! I think it just seemed that way because, um, I kept taking pictures of her while she was making our ice cream (I was soo oblivious to the fact that the boss' smile was getting more strained by the second ... :( ). And it was all a total waste because I have like five pictures and she's not looking directly at the camera in any of them! Which, in my opinion, is photographic evidence that Bea was doing her job!

Here's Bea greeting us as if she doesn't know us! "Hi, welcome to Coldstone's, how can I help you? Would you like to try any samples today?"

Here's Bea scooping ice cream!

Here's Bea squeezing caramel!

Here's Bea mashing the ice cream w/ the mix-ins!

Yup - that's myyy sister! Doesn't she look so cute in her hat and apron??? (Go visit her and tip her!! She's at the Monrovia location!)

--
And after we left Coldstone's, we practiced taking paparazzi pictures of Mom and Dad! They tried to discreetly exit out the back door ... luckily I got a tip from a little birdie and we were there for the shot! And that last picture was taken while crouched behind a nondescript 1989 Chevy, disguised as a Monrovia homeless person.

Without further ado, here are some of the best ones!

Mom and Dad were caught exiting Club Coldstone together Tuesday night; an exclusive source tells us that they stayed for four hours, sharing a Strawberry Blonde ice cream and margaritas. "She seemed like she was having a great time," the source says.

Despite continuing to officially deny a relationship, the two seemed very much in love. Another exclusive source tells us that Dad was cracking jokes the entire time. That source also adds, "I didn't think the jokes were that funny, actually." It must be love!

Yesterday David came to visit me and we went to eat at Cheesecake Factory! And then we went to visit Bea at work 'cause David needs to win brownie points with my sisters ... but we got lost! Even though I've been to the Coldstone's in Monrovia before! And even though I went out of my way to look up and write down directions from GoogleMaps ... =( Yes, Yes, I hang my head in shame, I have no excuse ... except that I do! Or at least I'll try: it was so dark I couldn't read my own handwriting! :( (I didn't say it was a very good excuse ...). I think we made something like five wrong turns, starting from when I told him to go west on Huntington as we pulled out of the mall parking lot (I thought we were on Duarte for some reason!). We also went west instead of east on Foothill and north instead of south on Myrtle ... :( And then as we were making like our FOURTH U-turn, we saw flashing lights from a cop car behind us! I was so scared 'cause David's never been pulled over before so it would've totally been my fault if he got a ticket! But when the cop came up to the window to ask for license and registration, he was just like, "Are you guys lost??" and that's when I tried really hard to look lost and confused, but I'm not sure he noticed. But he didn't give us a warning or anything; he just pointed us in the direction of Myrtle and told us to drive safely. Maybe he let us off 'cause he could see from David's license that we weren't from around the area. Or at least, David isn't. I have no excuse ... !!

After we got pulled over by the cop and then made another wrong turn, I thought David would get kill me but he didn't even get mad/impatient! Except now he says he doesn't want me to drive that much 'cause otherwise he'll be worried all the time. But I'm normally a good driver! I just have a bad sense of direction!

I wasn't as scared this time even though this was the second time it's happened in like two months. Maybe God was using his last heart-attack scare to prepare me for this time, when it was actually bad enough to require a hospital stay and  surgery. Bea's best friend's dad passed away a few months ago from a heart attack and it was literally one of those things where he got up that morning to make breakfast for his kids and by the end of the day, he was lying in a morgue, so I know enough to know that Dad is very, very lucky.

I shared at Little Spark (my SD fellowship) about my issues with the word "Hosanna" (which means "God saves"!) and just letting God have his proper place as Savior of my life. It's such a human tendency to want to micromanage my life and rely on my own efforts to get the desired results. But the fact is that I can make my dad eat all the right foods and take daily walks everyday and he could still walk outside tomorrow and get hit by a car! And I think when he had those really bad chest pains a few months ago, that was really scary because it was a reminder that human control is so illusory.

This reminds me of Philip's xanga entry a few months ago, when he got into a car accident. He quoted the Allstate Auto Insurance slogan: "Are you in good hands?" And he came to the conclusion that yes, he is in good hands - but not because he's covered by Allstate. Just like my dad is in good hands, too! So it's okay that I'm so bad at controlling all the different parts of my life and making things turn out okay because I was never very good at multi-tasking anyway.

I'm trying to remember this:
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11

This is all really good news because I am not ready for my parents to die.

A little 10th week/Finals Cheer

--

Spike is dying .... :( The first thought that came to me after I finally accepted it (he's been having arms fall off for a few weeks now) was: "Why did I name him? This is why people don't name plants."

After watching him slowly die in front of me over the last two weeks, I finally got desperate enough to seek counsel from the closest thing I have to a plant doctor - Peter Yu! He has like three potted plants in his room which is three more than pretty much ... any other person I know. I was so worried that Spike was beyond saving but Peter was like "We'll see ... I can't make promises! But I will try my best." And I have real hope that Spike can get better! Peter has a real green thumb so I know Spike's in good hands - check out his room when you get a chance, he has potted plants everywhere! So Peter's going to babysit Spike for awhile ... I visited the super senior guys' house and saw him recuperating on the shelf above the kitchen sink ... Peter replanted him for me and he looks sooo much better now!! And now he has a few other potted plants to keep him company ... and REAL sunshine! Instead of the simulated sunlight I provide for him via my desklamp. So I know he's well taken care of.

My little sister is mean and compassionless!!! Right now it's a plant - how's she going to react when I accidentally kill off something bigger?? Remind me not to ever use her as my one phone call from jail - she'd probably use up my five minutes laughing.

8:35:18 PM Rachel Li: spike's dying ..
8:35:25 PM i cee you8d: hahahahahahhahaa
8:35:31 PM i cee you8d: you're a bad parent!
8:35:56 PM Rachel Li: :( it's not my fault!!!!!!
8:35:59 PM Rachel Li: i dont' know what i did wrong!!!
8:36:33 PM i cee you8d: how are you gonna have a REAL baby?
8:36:36 PM i cee you8d: if you can't even handle a plant?
8:36:37 PM i cee you8d: hmm?
8:36:38 PM i cee you8d: YOU FAIL AT BEING A PARENT!

JUST so everyone knows - I think that taking care of a plant and taking care of a baby are totally different!!! I wouldn't overwater my baby or let its feet stick up in the air for long periods of time!!! :( And taking care of cacti is a lot harder than it seems!!! Like one minute they look totally fine and the next minute they've fallen over and their roots are all upended ... and they really do give NO INDICATION that they're thirsty ... so I kept thinking ... better to be safe than sorry .. and I'd water him!!! :( But I still only watered him like once every two weeks ... I don't know what I did wrong!!! :(

Power, Annie, please let me babysit your kids still!!!
