| What games did you play as a child?
Recently I've been nannying/tutoring piano for this family in Lincoln
Park a couple times a week. The kids (2 boys, youngest is a girl) are
pretty well-behaved and don't get into too much trouble. Parents are
nice and pleasant to work with.. for the most part. Please excuse my
stereotyping, but it's pretty much your wannabeperfectAmericanfamily.
I really do enjoy working for them. What suprised me today was when I was
playing the youngest, she came up with this brilliant idea to play
"Tatoo Parlor"
(me being the tatoo artist and her being the customer.)
She's 4 years old! I couldn't believe my ears! I had her
repeat it,
and sure enough.. "let's play tatoo parlor" came out of her little
mouth. When I was her age, I played with teacups and dolls.
Anyways, so for 30 minutes I pretended to be a tatoo artist
(specializing in poodles)... I guess
there's first for everything. Does anyone else find this odd? | | |
| How was your Christmas?
While I always complain that my family has to work on Christmas day
(it's tradition), this year was the very first time that I was
thankful for the privilege to work on Christmas.
So on Christmas
evening, the restaurant's crowded and filled beyond capacity, phones
are frantically ringing off the hook, and customers are irritable
because their
reservations have been pushed back a few minutes (due to previous
diners' abnormally long xmas dinners.. it's xmas, we're one of the few
places open, deal with it.) Towards the end of the evening, a man in
his mid-thirties goes up to the bar and orders a drink. He looks
depressed, tired, and lonely. Since it's the end of the night, my
family's hanging out at the bar with a few dishes and we offer him to
eat dinner with us since there's plenty of food and no one should be
alone on Christmas. As the conversation rolls, we find out that he's
spending Christmas alone because he's in the middle of a divorce and
custody battle for his son. You could hear in his voice how badly he
wanted to be with his son on Christmas... broke my heart. When I begin
to take care of the bookkeeping he leaves and gives the most genuine
"thanks and goodbye" I have ever encountered.
Well, the reason I'm thankful is that at least this guy didn't stay at
home and drink his depression away and that my family was able to offer
him a bit of hospitality, humor, and heart. Thanks for a wonderful
Christmas, God! | | |
| I feel like somewhat of an airhead. The other day I got into a
lengthy discussion about Christianity and the topic of original sin...
now I can't even pinpoint the reason why my friend doesn't believe in
original sin. (I may be officially losing my mind.)
Anyways, the discussion was a good reminder of how much more I need to
know Scripture, my heart, the impact of grace on my life... also
reminded of how sad and hurt my heart feels when the people you love
deny the saving grace of Christ.
