| escl8there is supposed to be a theme of "escalation" in the new batman movie. chris nolan has said this in interviews, and even batman mutter-growls it in a few lines from both movies i think. so, yeah, feel free to add this to the list of things that bug the shit out of me. what the fuck is a "theme of escalation"!? to begin with, i was raised in the school of being-very-clever, where the first thing we learn on our road to being very clever people is that THEMES CAN'T BE FUCKING ONE-WORD LONG. "love" is not a fucking theme, it is an emotion. "love sucks" is probably better if i'm honest, and "love hurts" is just another cheesy incubus song. certain two-word quote unquote themes are also bullshit. "racial equality" is not a fucking theme, it is a state of affairs to aspire towards or to hold secret contempt for. i myself oscillate between the two contrasting feelings, something that would make an excellent theme: voila, "racial equality is something to be appreciated and despised in equal measure" with this handy explanation in mind, let's go back to this marvellous theme of 'escalation' in the dark knight, which is doubly-double stupid. saying that there is a theme of escalation in a show (which there isn't) just because "things get worse before they get better" in the story, is like saying there is a theme of "stupid" in your brain just because you don't know what themes are. despite your obvious stupidity, it would be wrong to say that "stupid" stands as the obvious marker of your brain's identity. in truth, your brain's theme, were it a story, would be "the inability to grasp the proper meaning of words often leads to unfortunate situations", such as my lampooning of you, my imaginary friend. capisce? cakes |
