Happy Hump Day

Setting yourself apart is of key importance in the workplace. People
notice people who take into account all the little details.

The company policy for hiring new employees is to bring someone in to
work at various hourly positions for an extended period of time. They
will give you menial tasks and assignments and whether you realize it
or not - people are taking note of how hard you work, how diligent you
are, your organizational skills, ability to work with others or by
yourself, and how much effort they put into the details of every task
they are given. Your ability to learn new tasks rapidly and perform
them rapidly is what moves you forward in your career.

I've had better

Sometimes you give advice that sounds good when you say it and then later you realize that while it may sound good....if it's put into practice it might come back to bite you in the ass later. I've learned that at work in the past week....but that's life.

I've been given a small promotion at work which is good because it puts me in place to see how several other co-workers do their jobs and allows me to evaluate their jobs, break down the tasks they do, and find ways of doing them better. My cubicle is across from my boss and his boss's offices so I get to look out their windows for a view when I feel the numbness setting in.

It's a good set up for now but I want more. In the business world there are rules that people don't tell you - but have to be learned.

Ambition in life is a beautiful thing. If you show too little you'll be doing the same job for 10 years - right up until your company finds a way of moving on without you. Some of my co-workers lacks ambition and drive. They have become satisfied with maintaining the status quo. One in particular has caught my attention in the past week. He is probly 15 years my senior and married with a kid. He's a nice guy but when you wear mostly black and your nicest pair of shoes is more of a gothic boot you're not going to attract the attention you want. He stands out like a sore thumb. He's the kind of guy who you look at and just know he lives and dies by playing star wars: stratego and dungeons & dragons. People who become satisfied with the status quo are often the same people who are most likely to be "let go" from their jobs for no other reason then the basic necessity of improved efficiency in the company business model. It's a dead end way to live and work. Never be satisfied... always push for more.

Well I know it's been a long time since I updated but I've had no complaints and I've been super busy. I've been very blessed over the past few months. In October my brother came home safe and sound after his assignment in Kyrgestan that lasted 5 months. A few weeks after that he was able to come to Nashville for a conference and stay a few extra days on leave. In November I was blessed to get a job at the Barnes and Noble in Cool Springs only to turn around and get a job downtown at NASBA. I'm definatly moving up in the world - my cubicle is just around the corner from the office of the "in-famous" Jeremy "Skip" Miller. I'm living the High Life now! This weekend will forever mark the loss of John Peek to Holy Matrimony. I've been honored to be an Usher at the wedding! With any luck I'll get to make out with a really beautiful girl this weekend! My fingers are crossed! ......Seriously though - first Michael now John......who's next? There's only so many of us left.....most are betting that Lee and Wes will fight it to the very end which leaves me, Pax, and David. Ok readers it's time for some audience participation. If you're really bored take the time to comment on who you think is most likely to get hooked!
