I started a new job today. Praise the Lord! It's a wonderful opportunity and I'm very thankful for it. Even still, I couldn't help but continue to wonder why God had chosen for me to have to find a new job.
At church last Sunday, some old friends were visiting, and several of us began to talk about families that over the years have had to leave the church due to relocating. I began to think about how often God seems to move us around; moving some from job to job, others from church to church. From our perspective, it would be nice if friends and family could always stay together, and no one we cared about ever had to leave. But, as I tried to think about it in terms of God's kingdom, I realized that there were certainly benefits from the greater perspective.
From early childhood (if you were raised attending church), you probably sang the song, "This little light of mine". It comes from such Bible verses as Matthew 5:16, where we are instructed to let our lights shine. From our study of the Bible, we know that we are not capable of being lights to the world without God. We also know that we would not desire to be lights to the world without the work of the Holy Spirit on our hearts. But I realized this week, that we would also have no
opportunity to be lights to the world, without God providing it. He not only calls us to be lights, and enables us to be lights, but he sends us out into the world, in the right place at the right time according to His plan.
So, when someone moves on to a new location or a new job, it may simply be a matter of God redistributing His lights, into locations that need it more at that moment. If, as we move on, we keep in mind our central and most basic task in life, to serve God and be His lights to the world, then perhaps we can better deal with the changes and losses.
