2 ordinary disciples...

last week i had a chance to attend a Bible conference at a nearby church with some of my brothers and sisters.  The worship time was really traditional, with one pianist playing all the hymns in the traditional ways... however, I can feel the Holy Spirit working, and there was a  strong sense of fear of the Lord in the room... hard to describe, but certainly not something that can be manufactured by simply great music or instruments.

the speaker talked about the passage in Luke 24:13-15, where two disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, after the crucifixion of Jesus.  The Bible describes them as being "downcast" because that Jesus was crucified.   and not only that,  they were "amazed" at the fact that some women told them that Jesus has risen.  Come to think of it, it's very strange.  Why?  Because those two are supposed to be disciples of Jesus, and even if they never witnessed Jesus resurrecting Lazarus (and at least a couple of others), they should have at least heard about it.  And now they were sad thinking Jesus was dead for good, and were even  "amazed" at the fact that when people told them Jesus was risen from the dead.

The speaker brought up a good point, that sometimes we don't really know Jesus as much as we think we do.  We might know things about Him intellecutally, but become "amazed" when thinking it's possible that God can make some of the things that happened in the Bible, happen to us.   We might know to suggest others to pray for their problems, but might become more reluctant to pray when we are the ones facing the problems, that we prefer to solve them by our own power.

Anyway, when we read the end of that passage, we'll notice something happened.  Not only those two disciples become truly believed, but they immediately walked 7 miles and went back to Jerusalem to preach the good news, despite the fact that it was getting dark. What happened?  What caused their hearts to suddenly burn with fire...?

They got a chance to know more about Jesus during this time.

The passage mentioned that they met the resurrected Jesus along the way.  Note that they didn't even recognize Him, until, after Jesus explained to them and taught them more about Himself, based on the scripture.  Really, sometimes it really isn't all that complicated. You don't need to be a man of great faith or have great spiritual gifts. There are really no secret or magical tips or formulas needed on how to become "on fire" for Jesus. Other than the fact that God has His timing and does the work of opening our eyes in ways that we have no control of;  the more we read, know, and understand about Jesus from the scripture,  and find out more and more about how awesome, powerful, loving, and glorious He is,  the more likely our heart would be burning for Him and would naturally allow us to love Him and serve Him with a true passion!
