Anti-trust law in China

I'm doing some research on anti-trust law in China because of my business law project. This is the Chapter 1, section 1 of the law...

Looks like China is still not willing to giving up its "socialist" idea yet....:P

Corporate social responsibility and volunteer work

I'm in writing mood today somehow, but I promised this will be the last one for today.

I remember writing in xanga about volunteer work a year ago. I believed that most volunteer work is not the most efficient use of resource, and therefore not the best way to help the people in need. Donating money instead would be a better way to help. For example, as a computer engineer, if you spend your time volunteering in building a school for the under-privileged children, you are not maximizing the society's value. You might as well work an extra hour and donate the wage of that hour to charity, where they can use the money to hire 10 people to help build the school.

I got a lot of feedback trying to convince me the value of volunteer work, but I remained unconvinced. In the CE class today, I came across a quote from Milton Friedman. As an economics major myself, I very much agree to his view.

"There is one and only one social responsibility of business--to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud." -- Milton Friedman (economist), 1970

Then the class move on to introduce the idea of strategic corporate social responsibility. When I saw this idea, I felt it is almost exactly what I wanted to say. Basically, Michael Porter believes that corporations should utilize their competitive advantage strategically to create value for the company and the society at the same time. This is in contrary to "responsive CSR", where you could simply be a good citizen in the society without utilizing your competitive advantage. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, here is a suggested reading: The Link Between Competitive Advantage and Corporate Social Responsibility -- Michael E. Porter)

I believe what applies to CSR also applies to individual level, which is volunteer work. It is important to realize and utilize your competitive advantage, so you can create value for the society and at the same time create value for yourself. Otherwise, volunteer work is not the best way to help the people in need.

China vs Taiwan

This was the topic we discussed in our international politics class last week. I am quite a firm believer that the conflict will result in a peaceful resolution, especially after the election of President Ma Ying-jeou in Taiwan. Our professor was trying to plant doubts in our beliefs, and highlighted the possibility of military conflict in the region. I didn't buy it at all, until I thought about the 1989 event today. In some way, China today is somewhat similar to the China in 1989.

Since the end of Cultural Revolution, China had opened up its economic and social ties with western powers. The economy growth during the years of 1977-1989 had been phenomenal. At the same time, social problems such as inflation, urban migration and corruption worsened. There had been more freedom of press for the few years before 1989 than China ever had. Isn't it somewhat similar to where we are today? China's GDP is growing at 8% per year, yet the social problems remained unresolved. With the emergence of Internet, information flow and freedom of press increased, as evidenced in the aftermath of the recent earthquake.

Why am I trying to draw a parallel of China in 1989 and China today? In 1989, China seemed to be heading to the right direction, but a protest coupled with political struggle almost destroyed the ten years of hard work. As an authoritarian state, the power structure of China is inherently unstable. That was true 20 years ago, and it is the same today. If an unexpected event occurs and threatens the political power of the incumbents in China, such as an economy downturn, a social crisis, a natural disaster, or a protest like 1989, the incumbents could turn to nationalism to secure their hold to power, and Taiwan could become a victim in the process.

Once again, I believe a peaceful resolution can be worked out. But maybe I might have been too optimistic in totally discounting the possibility a war in the conflict.

(After seeing a message on facebook, I just felt like I have to write something about this. I started out in English, but somehow couldn't go beyond the second line, and ended up finishing it in Chinese somehow. Language is a weird thing.)
