It's all but over

With Edwards endorsing Obama, I'm just waiting for Hillary's concession speech.  Bummed, but I'll vote for Obama.

New dream ticket: Obama and Edwards (4:1), Obama and Clinton (1:4)

Attention rice shoppers, you may be killing millions of people.

So by now, you've probably heard that the world is experiencing a "rice crisis."  Let me be clear, while the world may be dealing with a shortage of rice, the US is not experiencing the same shortage.  There is plenty of supply to meet demand but it is true that with rising energy prices, climate events, allocation of grains for biofuels and population growth in Asia that the price of rice has increased the wholesale futures price of rice to 25 cents/lb which is a record high.
  • Sam's club is limiting rice purchases to 4 bags of certain varieties of rice.  Yes, Sam's could raise it's prices but Sam's like Costco prefer to make most of their profit on membership not purchases.  Sam's is acting responsibly to prevent hoarding of commodities that may limit the access of low cost grains and cereals to families on limited budgets.  (read: poor families)  You probably aren't poor, so don't hoard rice.
  • The US is largely insulated against the wholesale futures price of rice.  The US produces 2x the quantity of rice that the US consumes and exports the rest.  There is plenty of supply here in the US, while the low value of the dollar helps other nations buy rice at a cheaper price overseas.
  • So why is rice more expensive?  The rising cost of energy (read: oil), drought, floods, speculation, as well as population growth overseas, especially in Asia which amounts to increased demand in a market with less supply.
  • But I want to save money and insulate myself from future price increases.  If you can live with your conscience of being responsible for malnourished families here and around the world,  then shame on you.
I hope additional retailers will consider rationing rice and place item limits on rice instead of choosing to increase prices and make a tidy profit.  The limit would also draw down domestic demand and allow additional exports of rice to developing nations and even those like Myanmar affected by the cyclone last week at more affordable prices to aid agencies.

A village about 90 minutes outside of Yangon, a province of Myanmar that was affected by cyclone Nargis on Saturday, May 3, originally had approximately 40 homes and families.  The residents of the village sought refuge in the temple the size of a studio apartment which provided them sufficient shelter from the storm.  Upon exiting the temple, 38 of the 40 homes had been destroyed.  Since then they have received no aid from the govt. of Myanmar and have only received (2) 20kg bags of rice from a local aid agency.  That's 2lbs of rice for each FAMILY for 10 DAYS!

Please don't be "Chinese" there are people starving to death.  That's a price our minds and hearts should not be willing to pay.

Bags of rice, provided by World Vision, are
delivered to a temporary shelter for storm-
affected communities in Myanmar.

Myanmar not allowing aid workers in

7 days after a cyclone hitting Myanmar, the military Govt. has said it will accept money and aid supplies but not allow aid workers into the country to distribute and account for the aid provided.  With little or no accountability, few aid organizations will continue to supply aid.  The govt. is overburdened and seen as unable to meet the demands of crisis relief.  France is considering going into Myanmar without govt. approval.

Hundreds of people have already come down with water-borne illness due to the lack of clean water and sanitary conditions.
