| | I dusted off the old Agnax Project. What's up there doesn't work anymore because Xanga has changed a lot since May 7th 2004 when I released the Alpha version, but after a few hours of refactoring the code I got it modified to be able to turn every post on a given Xanga site private.
I must say. when I checked the project out from the server I was horrified and embarassed how BAD the code is. I mean, I know wrote it in haste, but seriously, that's some terrible code I wrote. On the other hand I can feel how much I've learned in the past two years and it gives me added confidence.
I find the fragmentation caused by all the disparate blogging (blogger, live journal, xanga, etc) and social networkng systems (facebook, friendster, myspace, etc) to be very annoying, in the way multiple chat system annoys me. It's not to say that I hate the competition, I encourage it, but I do hate the fragmentation caused by lock in -- you and your friends are stuck having to use one system because everyone is on it when all of you really rather use is something better that's available. People should be empowered to choose the way they want to express themselves.
I think I'm going to take some time to bring the vision of Agnax to fruition. The vision of Agnax is to provide the kind of solution Gaim provides the chatting lock in, a single client that can connect to multiple systems and enable people to conveniently keep in touch regardless of which system they subscribe to. This means that Agnax will have to be able to:
- Import/Export posts/personal data from/to each blogging/SNS systems.
- Provide a convenient central place to conviniently control data from each systems.
My goal isn't to undermine the hardwork done by Xanga, Blogger, Live Journal etc. I don't want to undermine their sources of revenue (such as advertizement and subscription service) and I will make effort to ensure these are incorporated to work with Agnax (perhaps displaying the ad links from the main site). They are providing resources to host and nurture the community and I think they deserve to profit from that. What I insist on is for people to have a choice, and if a group of people want to move somewhere else because they are disatisfied with where they are, they should be empowered to do so.
