Even though the Joker (from the Batman series [more specifically, the Dark Knight Joker played by Heath Ledger]) was a very very bad person, he had very good business ideas. He had some really good lines, but the one that stuck in my head was when he said, "If you're good at something you don't do it unless you get paid for it." Or something to that effect.
Now to get to my main point I have to back up just a little bit and add one thing from a book called "The Wealth of Nations" written by Adam Smith. In "The Wealth of Nations" Smith tells us, "Labor is the real measure of exchangeable value, and the first price paid for all things." In other words one must work first and then get paid i.e. a person's services are exchanged for money or whatever the payment, not the other way around, which i believe is how most people think about their job.
So my point and a tip from the Joker; A boss is buying your services, and you should not think they have more power over you just because they write the checks. In fact it should be the other way around. An employer or client wants/need your services. Here is an example:
You are the owner of a small business, and you are seeking financial advice. You hire Donald Trump, not because you have to, but because you want his guidance. We/employees are like Donald in this example. Sure Donald Trump is one of the richest men, but he never does anything without getting what his services are worth.
This example motivates me to be the best so employers or clients demand my services. You should set the price for what you are worth. Don't let someone else have that pleasure. Don't demean or cheat yourself. It is your hard work, and you owe it to yourself to work hard and get paid accordingly.
So get out there and be the best you can so you can reap the benefits of being super awesome!
One of my goals is to start a business. Since I know graphic design I might as well start a firm. I know a few of my friends want to get one going. I should start conversations with them about it. It would be fairly inexpensive to start as opposed to opening a restaurant. I can't wait.
Since We are facing uncertain economic times I do not want to trust others to provide me with a paycheck. Advertising, Graphic design, and other creative people are one of the first people to go if a company starts laying people off. So if I can provide for myself then I will feel more confident.
Today, the company I intern for had a board of directors meeting in the office. I am sure it is the same in other companies, but the board got lunch and was treated super uber special. I am not angry they probably have the experience, credentials, and respect to have earned that right to be treated special. Some day that will be me getting all that attention. haha. Gotta keep dreaming right?
After they left there was some food left over from the meeting. The employees were allowed to eat the leftovers (they must have all been vegetarians, cause there was a lot of chicken left). It was a nice gesture, but I can't help but feel like I am on the bottom of some sort of corporate food chain. No pun intended. In the wild the strong eat first and the weak get to pick and fight over the remains like scavengers. haha. Weird huh? You would think humans are different than lions or wolves. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned here.
I am having a party this weekend. Its gonna tons o fun. The theme of the party is Greek Games. Not the Olympics, but sorority and fraternity stuff. There is going to be lots of different events. Each guest that attends is assign to a 'house', and the houses are going to compete against each other in drinking games. I am on the beer pong team, and team chug/waterfall. All that is great, but I can't chug. I can't keep down half a beer if I chug. Its gonna be a problem. I will need to find a substitute. I have been practicing, but my body just doesn't like 12 oz of anything at one time. yesterday I went a quarter of a beer before I had to stop, and tonight I did a little bit better. hmmm. I don't want to embarrass myself.
