How coincidental then I just realized, that I am going to White Rabbit again tonight for dinner, and to watch Spanish movie "Bad Habits" at the Picturehouse after!

In light of the coming National Day this Saturday, August 9th,  the patriot in me has decided to post about...

Traits that make us One People, One Nation, One Singapore

*THE CRINGEWORTHY ones*

*Lack of courtesy.

Saying thank you, holding open doors, helping others.... Basically social graces in general.

Often when I travel overseas to say, down under in Australia, the difference is felt quite glaringly.

The Sunday Times' own courtesy investigation last  year showed that many Singaporeans are still impatiently trying to board the MRT without consideration for disembarking passengers. Friends always complain about how Singaporean drivers NEVER give way. Seems like everyone is too busy being kiasu.... Which brings me to the next trait...

*Kiasu-ness

One of the first things that come to mind when I think of Singaporean traits!

Singaporeans are brought up in a damned rat-race that starts since childhood. We are brought up constantly feeling the pressure beat others in everything, be it in school, work, owning the snazziest new handphone, grabbing the best Great Singapore Sale items, or piling food as skyhigh as possible on our buffet plates. A culture as such is self-centered, and is possibly the reason why we have no time or thought to think of others. Everyone's literally "scared to lose out".

Admittedly though, every country and culture has it's own form of kiasu. It is just that Singaporeans can probably get a tad extreme, AND we actually managed to come up with the perfect term for this phenomenon.

*Queuing up..... like sheep... or animals that blindly follow the pied piper.. lalala...

Whats the deal with the donuts and Hello Kitty?? Can anyone say "nuts" and "heelloooooooo?"

*Complain kings & queens

Perhaps it's precisely because we Singaporeans have it so good, that we start to tekan the small, insignificant things, just for the sake of it.

- We're a boring city

- Our English isn't good enough

- Too many foreign talents

- Not enough creative talent

- Local women are inadequate compared to China women

- Local men not good enough

- Singapore government is too strict

.... Amongst many others.

Or, any issue you're not happy about....."COMPLAIN!"

*Overly Pragmatic

Singaporeans are encouraged, in great part by societal influences and parents' pushing, to follow their heads and wallets more than their hearts.

Doctor, lawyer, banker, Indian chief (kiddin'), are all "better" than going into film, design, music, or writing. Dreams are set aside in the name of pragmatism. No wonder we are sorely lacking in the arts scene and appreciation for it.

I also find Singaporeans are usually afraid to take risks and explore. We've been brought up to make the safe choices. I remember after the A-levels, I asked some friends why they didn't want to further their studies overseas and expand their horizons when they had the option to. Their reply? "Too comfortable here lah."

O_O Shocking.

*The way we propose

I've heard horror stories of how some Singaporeans decide to get married by asking "Want to sign up for a HDB flat?"

Very very scary.

*THE ENDEARING ones.... KINDA*

*We "chope" seats and tables with tissue paper (sometimes newspapers or office passes too.)

This is just plain funny! Whoever started this trend in the first place? A true sign of our KIASUness... for a long time I never even knew about this unspoken golden rule! Oops, and I thought I was lucky enough to get free packets of tissue all those times when I sat down at my seat....

*We love food.

Makan makan makan! I guess this is the most endearing trait to me because it's the one I identify with the most :)  I love food, especially asian food. I can't live without spice (the hotter the better!), and our local fare. Yummmmmm! Singaporeans also have a funny habit of diligently tracking the whereabouts of their favourite hawkers, i.e..you know that the famous Tiong Bahru Bao is now in Jurong, the famous Outram Char Kuay Teow is now in Hong Lim Centre and the famous Lau Hock Kien Hokkien mee from the old Lau Pa Sat is now at Beach Road. We have countless number of food shows on the telly. We'll queue up 1 hour for that delicious bowl of laksa. We'll even drive from one end of the island to the other just to eat from a "famous" stall.

What to do? Our food is THAT good.

And more about gastronomical delights...

* Singaporeans are often always looking to add chilli or ketchup to his food.

Fries, chicken, noodles, whatever. Mmmm. (someone I know is guilty of this A LOT)

*We move to where we want our child to go to school.

Another manifestation of Singaporeans' kiasu-ness? I mean wow, parents will go through all the trouble of selling their house, finding a new place, packing, moving, and all other physically tiring activities just to get their kids into a primary school of their choice. It's only PRIMARY SCHOOL?!

But in a way, I reckon it is sweet because it just goes to show how much our parents want the best for our children.

* We need campaigns to tell us how to be courteous, to flush toilets, have sex, etc.

Another thing I find hilarious but has grown to become distinctly "Singaporean". We're always being told what to do. Whether we actually do it is another story altogether though ;)

*Singlish

This one ah, needless to say lah.

Everytime I'm overseas this is the surefire sign heard from a mile away to let me know a Singaporean is nearby.

comic

So what if other people catch no ball ah? Our very own language leh! Gahmen always say we not creative but Singlish is a very creative fusion of different languages and dialects ok! Innovative use of words and quirky... i like!! Go anywhere in the world, can hear someone talk Singlish, it's like "wahh!! fellow country man!" Give warm warm feeling in da heart u know? If our Singlish is not "Uniquely Singapore" then what is ah? ;)

*The way we swear

I don't think any other foul language compares to our brand of vulgarities, for example KNNBCCB (abbreviated). Nothing quite as astonishingly offensive as well. But then, there's just something really colorful, insulting, and at the same time really funny about our local swear terms :)

♥ Singapore. my home.

Competition heats up at Novena Square

Kaohsiung, Taiwan's "Son of Pool" Ching-Shun Yang played against Filipino Antonio Gabica to win 9-3. The former is the only player that day I knew of, because he's quite a famous face in Taiwan!

DSCN8516

I enjoy playing pool myself. Although not so fanatical anymore, in secondary school my friends and I would go down to the pool halls in town nearly everyday.  Sometimes I tune in to it on the telly, so watching the action live was pretty cool. Their amazing ability to clear the table in one turn is always awe-inspiring.

Would have been fun if the pros demonstrated some wicked trick shots after for the audience ;)

Thanks Charles!

Happy weekend to all~

Special Feature

For a long time, I was quite conscious of my smile. You may have noticed that I didn't show my teeth very often in many of my photos :D First reason,is because when you grin widely your face kind of puffs out... and it just so happens that whenever I put on weight it goes to my cheeks pronto! The second reason, is because my teeth were colored a little to the.... yellow side. Yuck!

Friends told me my teeth were fine.... but I think that is only 'cos they themselves had yellow teeth so they couldn't differentiate!

Sometimes I felt as though I looked like a smoker when I smiled, even though I don't smoke at all.

I don't drink much coffee or tea either, although I recall in Secondary 2 I had a most disagreeable cola/pepsi habit.

No matter how much I brushed my teeth it didn't help! Darkened teeth casts a noticably sallow dimness over your appearance, which I didn't like at all. I wanted a whiter, brighter, beautiful smile that would light up my face. Something....

*Dazzling*!

Smile, and the whole world smiles with you.

I didn't really trust non-professional procedures and clinically unproven teeth whitening home kits that can often lead to unsatisfactory results. I didn't want to wait months for results either. There were also the horror stories from friends about gum erosion

I wanted something immediate, great, yet safe.

Whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe and effective, as indicated by extensive research and clinical studies. In fact many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available.

I did some research online, and asked around my friends for recommendations on a good dental clinic.

Finally, after hearing many good things about them, I went to Lee and Ong ( at Fareast Shopping Centre)

DSCN1092

The clinic had a very stylish yet cozy and comfortable ambience, the crew of nurses were so friendly, plus... patients can help themselves to food, drinks, cakes... & even yummy cup noodles!

DSCN1091

I felt very at ease with the warm and well-spoken Dr. Ong, who also happens to be cute and charming to boot.

He recommended me to do the whitening treatment Zoom.

Zoom whitening will set you back $1000, but I was very convinced it was worthwhile for INSTANT, safe, and excellent results compared to the other options. The rest are such a hassle, and I certainly wouldn't want to put my teeth and gums at risk.

Furthermore, this price is still comparably cheaper to other dental clinics.

So I booked my appointment to get my whiter pearlies!

On the fateful day......

Gum protectant gel is applied. And aren't those mighty cool shades.

DSCN0830
Zap zap zap! Looks like I'm in a Star Trek movie. This is fun.

There is no pain whatsover, but you would have to bear with the discomforting ache of your mouth being stretched open and keeping as still as possible.

After 4 rounds of 15 minute sessions...

Look at the incredible results!

DSCN0832A

Front 2 teeth were untouched first to show the contrast between before and after. Wow, amazing or what?

Not to worry, they didn't forget to Zoom! my two front teeth later as well.

And here is my wonderful whiter smile I've dreamed of -

Thank you!

I used to be terrified of dentists, but I feel so at home with Lee & Ong,  you can bet I will be going back there for my future dental checkups too :)

MCQ Time.

Dawn has not been blogging because she

a) turned into a koala bear
b) is eating too many Pancakes on the Rocks
c) is busy being called "goose" by random drunk strangers
d) has ran off into the sunset with her handsome new aussie surfer dude husband (who happens to be a carbon copy of Christian Bale btw) whom she got married to on a whim, at Bondi beach nonetheless.

Shaded in your answers already?

Well a) is not true, although I'm nearly as cute hehee ;)
b) is true to an extent
c) is somewhat true
d) is very very true. In my dreams.

So the more likely answer would be ... e) None of the above!  Hmm what? Did you pay your optometrist to do such a bad job?

Anway, I was on holiday in Sydney, and just got back in the morning, hence was scarce on time to post... Sorry to all of those who've been emailing asking me to hurry update!

Regarding legal matters with thou-who-shalt-be-named, I have been advised to refrain as far as possible from discussing them on my website for now. The lawyers will be handling the case :)

Some people may like slinging mud on their blogs, but I don't and never did... so onto happier things here is a photo from my holiday down under~

DSCN7978a

More to come very soon, and the World Youth Day happenings there... but I have to rush out now.....

If you haven't quite got enough to fill your yawn of a time-space equilibrium, perhaps you could try hunting down my secret blog where I've been jotting down for some time about everything under the sun as unprohibitedly as I like anonymously (no pictures!) haha and where visitors comment with no pride nor prejudice.... there I don't write about other people in case you're wondering, but more musings about life and what not, and personal things...  however it is a lost chest of golden trinkets I doubt anyone would find...  the pleasures of unadulterated privacy ;)

Blessed Friday~...*

: Pleasant Surprises :

I arrived at the airport 8am in the morning, huffing and puffing from my last minute packing and mad trolley rush, only to find out that my flight had been rescheduled to the next morning. Due to an industrial air strike supposedly.

-.-

BUT..... it might have been a blessing in disguise, because  for the inconvenience caused, I enjoyed a complimentary stay from the airline at Traders Hotel!!! (adjacent to Tanglin Mall, famous eatery Ah Hoi's Kitchen)

What a luxe opportunity!

*I love hotels ~  the spick&span room, lovely clean linens, heavenly bed, goosedown pillows you sink your head into, marble bath, room service, housekeeping, pool, food, spa, ammenities.... well you get the idea ;)

Took a cab to Traders, where the concierge paid for the fare.

The hotel lobby...

Taking a break from re-organizing my luggage, see the mess on the bed? (remember I mentioned I did some last minute frantic packing... Because I had to leave pretty much right after returning from KL!)

Getting a little trigga-happy....

The things you do in desolation. Being all alone in the room with only the TV for company, I decided to inject some entertainment into packing by documenting my items.

....and finally, being bored and bo liao + sugarhighly excited...

Now  you know which part of the globe I'm at :)  It's World Youth Day here. As part of the WYD festivities, was just at a Bondi Beach music concert with throngs of people and church groups from all over the world, and will be doing a Sydney Harbor Bridge pilgrimage walk to see Pope Benedict!

And of course, the company of my dear friends here ♥
