  • You really know you're starting to get old when the crushes you had in your younger years are aging before your eyes. For those who are older than I am (ie. New Kids fans, you know what I mean...)

I think I've been a Jude Law fan for a while, it was right before the Talented Mr. Ripley came out. If you've seen the movie he was pretty hot in it, all tanned and blonde playing an American playboy in Italy. That movie had some of the nicest Italian scenery. I think he's a good actor and I like the movie Gattaca. Then of course he fell further down the A list when his reputation got trashed by cheating on his wife with the nanny and then dating (committed homewrecker) Sienna Miller. I still think he's quite photogenic, but hey Jude, it's not good when you're in a Dior ad and people have to photoshop your receding hairline back in!

(L to R): Young Jude, Photoshopped Jude, Actually Balding Jude

Plus what is really funny is these ads he did for Dunhill. Notice the artful placing of props and hands:

Photographers are geniuses. Oh well, he's still got it (though not for long)

In high school, my friend had a huge crush on Jonathan Brandis (from the Neverending Story, Seaquest DSV) and she would buy all the teen magazines with his face on it. I always thought he looked really androgynous to me, like Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry. Now suddenly when I see all the teen girls crushing on the Jonas brothers and the girly guy from High School Musical I'm taken back to when I went through that same phase. I thought it would be fun to do a then and now comparison of some of my ancient past crushes!

    Matthew Lawrence

I loved Boy Meets World and even though everyone liked Rider Strong who played the rebel sidekick or preferred Matt's older brother Joey Lawrence, I liked Matt because he played the smart one. A few months ago the lame movie The Hot Chick was on TV and Matt was in it playing the typical jock boyfriend. Recently he broke up with Cheryl Burke from Dancing with the Stars and for some reason has started to resemble Apollo Anton Ono....has he turned Japanese?

    Christian Bale

Talent is hot. Who knew that the little boy from Empire of the Sun and Newsies would grow to be Batman?! I am sure he will be one of those George Clooney types that look better with age. Sorry about the mom bashing though.

    Keanu Reeves

It was such a 90s thing to like Keanu after Speed. He sort of revived himself with the Matrix series but he's still quite boring personality wise.

    Johnny Depp

I had a little Johnny crush after Edward Scissorhands. I LOVED when he and Winona dated. My favorite early 90s gothy couple. He's so weird looking now with this Bohemian look but I'd still go see anything he's in.

    Ricky Martin

This is so embarassing to admit, but I liked Ricky Martin in the latin craze of the 90s when Living La Vida came out and he shook his bon-bon in too-tight pants at the Grammys. Unfortunately he turned out to be sort of a one trick pony and it got annoying when he tried to incorporate all the new agey stuff about meditation, yoga, and hanging out with Buddhist monks. I always like the pretty boys who are all probably gay. I'm like Grace on Will & Grace. When I think of Ricky now I keep thinking of Chris Kattan's impersonation on SNL or William Hung. Stop with the grins and pointing already!

And even though I missed the NKOTB group here's an old pic for kicks

Hey my grandma has that hairstyle!

Man...seems like an eternity ago! Who wase your celebrity crush way back when? Are they now fat, out of the closet, or in rehab?

  • It's not that I am high maintenance...

Well maybe just a little bit.

If you are a girly-girl, it is just given that you'd also be tacked with the label 'high maintenance.' Throw in other synonymous adjectives like 'diva', 'prissy', 'inflexible', 'demanding', 'controlling', and 'self-indulgent' and instantly you have the image of:

The Royal Highnesses of High Maintenance

So maybe these women are a bit on the extreme side. They are celebrities after all, which just equals high maintenance to the second power. Still, I don't think that most girls would admit to being high maintenance. It doesn't sound very pleasant. But when you stop and think, is it really so bad to be a little maintenance and know what you want? To take a little more time to devote on your appearance? To turn down events involving extreme sports and the great outdoors over a nice aromatherapy massage and facial? Or does it mean one is being narrow minded and stubborn to stick to things we like?

I like shopping and pretty things, but I wouldn't go so far to say I spend hours primping and preening. I don't have manicures all the time, I don't wear 4 inch heels to work, wear false eyelashes and extensions, and a full face of makeup to take out the trash. But sometimes I worry that I can be a bit closed minded and unwilling to try adventurous things and take risks. So I have to take baby steps.

When it comes to food, I don't think I am very adventurous at all. I eat sushi of course, which being a Vancouverite, is a given. I also like Chinese, Greek, Mexican, Spanish, South Asian foods. Besides Japanese my favorite is Italian, quite safe. Most of all I enjoy dining out and spending money on a good meal - a glass of wine, a fabulous outdoor patio with a view, fresh seafood and friendly service. But tonight I threw all that away because I'm trying new things and stopping myself from being close minded and high maintenance so I accepted an invitation to try ETHIOPIAN food in a kitschy, run down but new-agey district in Vancouver with some friends.

Turns out I don't like Ethiopian food after all. Firstly I hate going to restaurants where you walk in and it just smells strongly of spices. It means when you leave you're going to smell like the restaurant and when you go home you'll have to shower from head to toe and throw everything you wore right into the wash immediately before it taints other clothes. I also hate eating with my hands, I can't get used to it and it feels weird - like eating with your opposite hand. I had flashbacks of the scene in Along Came Polly when the cautious and conservative Reuben (Ben Stiller) agrees to try Moroccan food with the hippish Polly (Jennifer Aniston) and had a nightmare date. I paid for my dinner but I just couldn't eat anything and felt horribly out of place as everyone around me licked their fingers and sat barefeet and cross-legged on the floor. Plus it wasn't even strange things like intestines or endangered animals that are served as delicacies in other ethnic restaurants. I'm such a wuss!

Last week I also tried hiking on Bowen Island, which is really a dot of an island from Vancouver and takes only 10 minutes by ferry and the same time to explore. I don't know what I expected but hiking was actually just walking around this tiny bog floating with green pond scum.

I hate being that stereotype of the city girly girl shrieking in the woods worried about flies and mosquitos, but I'm beginning to wonder if there is a point to forcing myself to be someone I'm not comfortable with. Maybe I will have to accept the terms and admit to being high maintenance after all. I mean, you can't expect Posh to suddenly wear cleats and Mariah to wear turtlenecks and mom jeans can you?

    How high maintenance are you?

The big news over the weekend was that boy Messiah and girl Messiah were born aka the Brangelina twins. Rumour has it that tabloids are bidding up to $11 million for the pics of Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline. That, plus pictures of the mayor from Nice holding up birth certificates and declaring their birth a holiday. Good God, what is this world coming to? Already everyone is praising their choice of names. When I think of Knox I don't know why I'm thinking of 1) Knorr 2) Knox gelatin or 3) Oxo cubes. Although I do like Vivienne Marcheline. It's quite pretty. I've always liked the name Vivienne since I'ved heard it from the fashion designer Vivienne Tam (plus my grandmother's name is Vivien). You can click on the link to read more if you have a few minutes to waste away today: http://www.celebritybabyscoop.com/?cat=5&submit=Go I thought it was interesting that everyone predicted the twins to be two girls and one was actually a boy so now there will be someone to carry on the Pitt legacy looks-wise. He'll either look like a mini Brad or Angelina's brother. I hope it's the former.

It's been such a interesting summer so far. I'm loving that I'm making the time to go out and see friends, watch movies, read good books, go shopping and doing stuff. I've found that cutting back computer addiction will yield more time. The last I saw was Wanted. I don't remember the last time I saw such a good movie even though normally I pass at these bloody action flicks, but in addition to all the special effects and stunts it is packed with eye candy as well starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie at her typecasted best.

In a few days I'm going to see Wall-E and I'm excited cause all I've heard are great things about it. Plus who's going to see the Dark Knight? Oh it looks amazing but in my heart Christian Bale will always be Laurie while my friend is reminded of the kid from Newsies, but still, for a child actor he turned out ok.

    Laurie

It's been an strange sort of day. There was a fire that caused an explosion downtown and it lead to a power outage. It was a bad thing but I was thrilled that we were all told to go home by noon on a sunny Monday. I went shopping before heading home. I'm recently so into delicate jewelry. I love the ones that are on thin gold chains, a bit antiquey looking and in matte gold finishes - so Parisan looking. I especially adore ones with semi-precious stones or birds. They look so nice with summer ensembles. The Vancouver store Blue Ruby has a lot of nice goodies and I also like browsing around on Etsy as well though I've yet to actually buy something.

Anyways that's a quick update and hello from me. Hope to be back soon. Ta-ta 4 now.
