  • Twitch!

Twitch from So You Think You Can Dance was in the movie, "Hairspray"!  Vincent & I were watching it tonight and we saw him :) We're probably slow in finding that out...but it was still exciting!

I also burned my forehead with my curling iron today :( No fun...I hope it doesn't leave a permanent scar...

  • Recent Happenings

So, today...I officially finished my first year of teaching :)  My fifth graders were a tough and rowdy bunch, but I loved every minute of the school year.  I feel really blessed to have been placed at the school I'm at, working with the people I've been working with and just to have a job that I love.  This year has definitely flown by and I can't believe it's over.  Today, I got to give my students a little speech about how much I appreciate them and I realized that through all the chaos they've put me through, that I really did enjoy this year and I had a lot of great things to say to them.  Yay to being done with my very first official year!  Hellooooo, summer break!  Yes, I will be teaching summer school, but hey...a girl can enjoy her few weeks of summer break, can't she?

My parents and brother have been visiting for the past week and it's been great having them around.  I love that they loved NewSong and I love that they're learning their way around Irvine.  I also am excited because they'll be staying with us this weekend and we have lots of cooking planned together.  We'll also be breaking in our BBQ that we have yet to use .  It's a great BBQ, but we just haven't had the chance to use it! So if it goes well, maybe we'll have a BBQ!

Tomorrow also is the first day of summer.  So, regardless of if you have summer break or not...HAPPY SUMMER!

  • today in school...

Today in the middle of class, I was reading a book to my students.  Then all of a sudden, out of no where, one of my students named Adam calls out, "A BIRD!!"  I look to my right and there inside my classroom by the window was a small bird frantically flying in place.  I shrieked.  After a few seconds, the bird stopped flapping, realizing that it could not fly through the window.  It then proceeds to fly across to the other side of my classroom towards another closed window (keep in mind, all of my windows were actually closed).  At this point, all of my students are out of their seats and running all over the place.  Good luck trying to get 25 fifth graders seated during all of this excitement.  So, then it flies back to the other side of the room again.  After a few more seconds, it flies back to the other side.  Then, finally, we decide to try and open a window so that it can fly out, but as we do that...the bird FLIPS out and flies towards the opposite window and SPLAT...flies straight into the window at FULL speed ! Then, as if in slow motion, it falls onto its side flat on the countertop.  We all *gasp* and stare at the bird which apparently looks as if it had stopped moving.  When we look at it carefully, we can see that its still breathing.  One of my students, Xavier, then walks slowly towards the bird and cups it in his hands.  He places it gently on the floor outside and my whole class gathers at the window to see what will happen next to the bird.  We see the rising and falling of its body begin to slow down...did it stop breathing? I didn't know what to do next, so I called the office to give them a report as to what happened.  Then, one of the ladies from the office comes with a box top, scoops up the bird and walks off.  All of my students freak out because they think the bird is dead.

At recess, I went to talk to the lady in the office and she reassures me that the bird was just stunned.  After a few minutes, the bird finally calmed down and was able to fly away home.  *phew*...what an exciting morning :)

  • My 1st Open House!

I can't believe it, but there are only 15 days left of the school year for me!  It's been a tough first year, but I LOVE my job.  Teaching isn't "easy", as many people say.  Also, we don't have shorter work days than most people.  Our work days just START earlier, therefore, we end earlier (I'm at work for at least 8 hours a day).  Plus, on occasion, we take work home (both physical work and emotionally). So, teaching isn't easy...but it sure is something that brings me joy :) I'm glad that I've found my niche.

Here are some pictures of my classroom from Open House :) My students did a great job in creating all these projects to display for Open House.  So, without further ado...enjoy!

    The view from my desk

The view from the entrance - suffix ladybugs!

    Our prefix flowers

Our preposition trees - Do YOU know what a preposition is?

    Our "emotions" art project

State flag windsocks.  My fifth graders all had to do a state report.  Then, they made a windsock of the state that they researched

Here's my entry from the beginning of the school year, in case you forgot :) http://www.xanga.com/cloudieskie16/620201616/classroom-update.html

  • I Sometimes Question My Abilities As a Teacher

My students have been working on their 5th grade state reports for the past few months.  Each kid got assigned a state and had to write a 5 paragraph report including all the information they learned about their specific state.  As I was reading this one specific report, I got kind of depressed.  It got me thinking...how many students actually have NO CLUE when it comes to what their teacher is saying? This paper got a  few giggles out of me and it had my husband literally almost rolling on the floor, but when I think about how it's supposed to be an actual final REPORT, I feel like somewhat like a failure.  Here...let me share..read it, it'll probably get a chuckle or two out of you.
