SDY 11 by Prisci: The Snake Bite - destination, 4 stars

The Ballad Of Seo Dong: EPISODES 11. Synopsis & Highlight Translations
***By Priscilla (Read the DIALOGUES IN GREEN!)

[Priscilla’s Title: THE SNAKE BITE]

Sunhwa starts walking back, when she sees Jang, weakly smiling at her.

Jang: I took too long, didn’t I? (Sunhwa embraces him, crying.)

Giroo sees them…

Sunhwa: (Holding her emotions) You’ve come! You’ve come!

Jang: (Weakly) Yes, I did.

Sunhwa: You came!

Chogee’s voice: My Lady! My Lady!

Sunhwa: You know the large tree below Jin’s
Temple? Wait for me there.

Jang: Yes.

Sunhwa: Don’t go anywhere else.

Jang: I won’t.

NEXT

Jang: Though you told me you’d wait for me until I come, I didn’t think you’d wait this long. After my mother passed away, I lived in turmoil. That’s when I saw My Princess for the first time. The moment I saw you, I felt myself calming down.

And ten years later, without having accomplished anything, I lost my identity and my heart was growing colder. Then I saw you again. As soon as I saw you, my heart grew warmer. In this way, I was able to find myself again. Even though I knew this was your doing, I went against your wishes, returning to this place.

And then, I tried hard to push you away, searching for my lost identity. Without any protest, you stayed right next to me. And you helped me. You encouraged me. You acknowledged me. You even spoke respectfully to me. During all those moments, wherever I was, you were with me. I won’t deny this anymore. I don’t want to deny the fact that I’m thinking of My Princess all the time.

However, My Princess… to do that… to follow my heart’s desire like that… there’s something standing in the way.

Sunhwa: What is it? Tell me…

Jang: I’ve a secret.

Sunhwa: A secret? Tell me…

Jang: It’s a secret I cannot reveal.

Sunhwa: No matter what, I’ll accept it. So speak up…

Jang: I can’t. Please don’t ask me that.

Sunhwa: There shouldn’t be any secrets in between us. So tell me…

Jang: But that one I can’t… (Silently to himself) That was the reason brother Bumsaeng died. I’d be betraying Hanuelchae again if I say this…

Sunhwa: You don’t fully trust me, do you?

Jang: …

The night became day, but the lovers continue sitting down under the tree, without saying anything… Then, Sunhwa walks away.

NEXT

Chogee: My Princess! Why did you take this long! I thought I was dying pretending you were sleeping!

Sunhwa is in her room, thinking…
Jang is standing under the tree, thinking…
Jang runs towards the princess’ courtyard, but she isn’t there.
Sunhwa’s standing outside, thinking.
Jang makes up his mind and goes to see the princess under the huge tree.

Jang: I’ll tell you what it is. I will.

Sunhwa: (Sitting down.) You don’t have to. I’m OK. If you can’t tell me, there must be a reason for it. So I’m fine.

Jang: How could you treat me this way, My Princess?
Other people tell me I’m untrustworthy. How could you trust me?
Others tell me I’m disrespectful. How could you be OK with me?
Others tell me I’m dangerous, unreliable, scandalous, and immature. But how could you, My Princess…?

Sunhwa: Because I believe… I believe that you’re a great man.
What you did during the farmer’s uprising event was really dangerous and uncalled for. But there was a deeper purpose behind your actions.
When you walked away ignoring the arrow that was threatening your way, your action was in fact shocking and immature. But the way you focused on your purpose, and the way you accomplished them was profound.

Jang: I’ll do my best to accomplish my goals!
There’re two goals in my life. I must earn the approval from the Head Master of Hanuelchae so that I can find out who I am, and where I belong. The other one is the path towards you, My Princess. Both paths are overwhelmingly difficult. And they’re so vastly different it’s hard to believe I can walk both simultaneously. But surely, I’ll try!

Watch me grow, unreliable as I am right now, into a deeper and a better man. (Giroo is watching them from the distance.) Because of My Princess, and with you by my side, I’ll grow.

Sunhwa: Me too, I’ll change. Unreliable as I am, with you by my side, I’ll mature. Because of you, and with you by my side, I’ll become like that.

NEXT

Giroo looks at the arrow target and he kicks it in wild anger. Later, he gives a letter to Goosan for his father, telling him he will massacre the Hanuelchae people: “I’ll kill them all!”

NEXT

Maekdosu and the younger crowd from Hanuelchae are trying to come up with the best recipe to cook bacon.

Jang: (Walking by.) Class is about to start. What are you all doing here?

Maekdosu tells him they always have a warm-up class before the real one. So he tells Jang to be their judge and decide which bacon tastes the best. Mojin comes by, asking them what they are doing. Everyone vanishes away.

DURING CLASS

Mojin is teaching how to make clothes dye. Jang is attentively scrabbling down notes. Maekdosu complains that he has been taking the same class for many years already, but Mojin reprimands him for never improving.

NEXT

Mokrasu had to teach Jang how to gold-plate a metal, but he’s not feeling well. So he asks Giroo to teach instead. “You know that the gold powder can be poisonous. So make sure he doesn’t go too near the fire.”

NEXT

Jang: I didn’t know that taking classes in Hanuelchae could be this fun. What’s master Mokrasu going to teach me today?

Giroo: I’ll teach you.

Jang: Really? What?

Giroo: You’ll gold-plate this bell.

Jang: Gold-plate this? Can we do that? (Yes.) How do we do this?

Giroo shows Jang the process. Then, he sees Jang holding the bell on top of the fire, and Giroo hesitates for a few seconds. But when Jang’s face was getting closer to the fire, Giroo pushes him back.

Giroo: Don’t go too near the fire. That’s poisonous!

NEXT

Jang is writing some things, while remembering...

Sunhwa’s Voice: I’ll teach you literature and you teach me what you’ve learned during your science class on that day.

NEXT

Giroo reprimands Goosan for failing to deliver his previous message to his father. Goosan tells him his father wasn’t available, and he also feels the message is too rash. But Giroo orders him to send that message anyways.

NEXT

Jang: Why are you outside?

Sunhwa: I’m afraid you’d get caught in my room.

Jang: Then?

Sunhwa: Before, when I hurt my legs, I rested in a little cabin nearby. It looked like it was abandoned. Let’s go there.

NEXT

Sunhwa: That’s it. Over there.

Jang: I see a cabin up there.

Sunhwa: Ouch!! (She kneels down in pain.)

Jang: Stop it. I won’t be fooled anymore.

Sunhwa falls down. Jang sees a snake. So he ties the princess’ leg and he starts sucking in her wound, spitting out the poison.

Sunhwa: I heard... that’s dangerous… (Jang continues sucking her wound.) If you have a small cut inside your mouth, it could be fatal…

She loses consciousness. Jang continues sucking and spitting, until he too faints. Giroo runs towards them. He takes Sunhwa to her room.

NEXT

Giroo tells Chogee that Sunhwa was bitten by a snake, and he gives her  instructions on what to do.

NEXT

Bomyung is worried that the herb they fed the princess might not help. Giroo tells them they should still continue feeding her that, until they find ‘woomdang,’ a better remedy.

Giroo is going around the different ‘drug-stores’ to buy ‘woomdang,’ but the store-owner tells him that won't be easy to find.

Jang hurriedly asks Maekdosu how to treat a snake bite, and the old man tells him that ‘woomdang’ is good, but that the best remedy is “wang-jinae.” Jang runs away, but Maekdosu murmurs: “You won’t be able to find Jinae right now…”

NEXT

From outside of Sunhwa’s room, Giroo sees Jang feeding some medicine to the unconscious princess. Jang spreads the medicine over her wound. When Jang walks outside, Giroo hides away.

Jang: (To himself.) I need more Jinae! (He leaves.)

The maids are worried the princess is not responding to treatment. Sochoong tells Giroo he couldn’t find ‘woomdang’ anywhere.

Giroo: I found it. (To the ladies.) Prepare this.

NEXT

The princess wakes up.

Sunhwa: Who brought me here?

Chogee: Who do you think? (Pointing at Giroo.) It’s this gentleman. Who knows what would have happened if it wasn’t for him.

Bomyung: Yes, this gentleman saved you.

Sunhwa: (Worried.) Then… what happened to him who sucked the poison from my wound?

Chogee: I’m telling you it’s this gentleman. He gave us instructions on what to do and he even brought the medicine. That’s why you’ve recovered so fast.

Sunhwa looks fearful.

Chogee: Why are you looking like that? Are you in pain?

Giroo: You’re still very weak. (To Bomyung.) From now, just give her the common sprouts. Please, prepare them. (The ladies leave.)

Sunwha: What happened to the gentleman that was there?

Giroo: Gentleman?

Sunhwa: He was sucking my poison and he fainted… He must still be there. Please save him! Since you saved me, please save that gentleman also! Please, I beg you! If he dies, I won’t be able to live. He risked his life for me. So please… save him!

NEXT

Giroo asks Maekdosu for Jang. Maekdosu tells Giroo that yesterday, Jang was looking for Jinae like crazy. Giroo finds Jang unconscious in the forest, near the insect trap.

Giroo’s voice: If you leave now, our enmity will end right here. So just go!

He turns around to leave, but he remembers Sunhwa’s pleading voice: "Please save him! Please, I beg you! ! If he dies, I won’t be able to live. He risked his life for me. So please… save him!"

Giroo was walking away, but he stops. He turns back.

NEXT

Jang: (Waking up.) How did you find me? How did you know I was there? How did you know I was poisoned by a snake bite? (Sitting up.) You saved my life. Thank you for saving me. I really thank you.

Giroo: Don’t ever do that again.

Jang: Do what?

Giroo’s voice: Don't sacrifice yourself for my princess.

Giroo: (Before he leaves.) Thank you for being alive.

NEXT

Sunhwa: You’re alive!

Jang: Yes, a friend from Hanuelchae saved me.

Sunwha: I was so worried!

Jang: Me too.

Sunhwa: I told you that was dangerous. Why did you do it? I was afraid you’d be harmed because of me.

Jang: So from now on, don’t pretend you’re bitten by a snake anymore! Look at what happened!

Sunhwa: …

Jang: I’m leaving now.

Sunhwa: So soon?

Jang: (Playfully.) I don’t want to see you. I’m going to study.

Sunhwa smiles.

NEXT

Giroo: You’re not strong enough to be walking around yet.

Sunhwa: I’m fine now. And I thank you. You helped me twice already when I was in need.

Giroo: It’s nothing. By the way… the gentleman you wanted me to save…

Sunhwa: Yes, he’s OK.

Giroo: But that gentleman… when I saw him the other day, he looked like a man of low birth. How could you speak respectfully towards him?

Sunhwa: He may be of low birth, but I admire him. At first, judging by his low social status, I thought I could treat him anyway I liked. However, the way he focused on the sciences, and the way he treasured the people’s lives, not just in words but in action… his inner-strength… (She stops there, blushing.) Sorry, I’m talking too much…

I guess I’m just trying to justify myself, since you wouldn’t approve of my action. The type of people who can really help Shilla must be like him, regardless of his social status. And the person I can honestly keep in my heart must be like that gentleman also.

NEXT

Giroo tells his father that he changed his mind regarding the ‘massacre.’ His father agrees, saying that his mission’s not over yet, so he would be considered a failure if he kills the Hanuelchae people before finishing his task.

Giroo tells his father that he’ll make sure he becomes a scientist as soon as possible so that he could reveal himself to the princess and return home. He also knows that if the king finds out what the princess has been doing, she’ll be disgraced. So he decides to keep this a secret.  He tells himself to hurry up in becoming a scientist.  He only needs 9 more stars to get there!

NEXT

Sunhwa asks the priest if a person coming up with the worm-fertilization technique might be able to go up a social ladder. The priest tells her that a low class commoner could become of a higher rank through that type of inventions…

Sunhwa: What if he’s not a low class commoner? What if he’s a slave… or a fugitive slave from
China?

Priest: It depends. But if he’s useful for the country, he might become a citizen of Shilla. There are ID plaques that can be given to talented people from other nations that come to Shilla. (Really?) Yes, as long as they’re planning to reside in this country.

Sunhwa’s happy.

NEXT

Sunhwa decides to return to the Palace, and she orders Sochoong to investigate what happened 10 years ago, when the fugitive slaves were captured. She wants to know all the details, and of the reason some of them died.

NEXT

Heukjipyung tells General Sun that one of the assassins who went to kill prince Aja saw a second ‘stoned necklace.’

Sun: Another one? Are you telling me that Aja carried two, or it's from someone else?

Heukjipyung: The man died before explaining himself.

Sun: It doesn’t make sense for Aja to carry two. But if this belonged to someone else, that means that there’s another prince. That's nonsense.

NEXT

Wangoo: (To the prince) 3 years after that, I went looking everywhere for him. But we couldn’t find him.

Aja: Does this mean that Buyo-Sun found him first? That must be why the necklace was in the hands of the assassins. What was the name of the dancer?

Wangoo: Yungamo.

NEXT

Mokrasu: (Thinking to himself.) Why on earth would Yungamo tell Jang to earn my respect? What does this mean? What does this have to do with Jang finding his father?

Mojin: What are you thinking right now?

Giroo comes to them, saying that he wants to participate in the coloring research. He goes to the library and he finds Jang already researching about it.

Jang: I was looking for herbs that are good for the skin. Instead of looking everywhere, I felt I should find an herb that’s good for the skin with which we can dye cloth with. Here! (Putting the book down) I’m done. (He leaves.)

NEXT

Both Jang and Giroo are researching hard, cutting different plants and cooking them to use them as dyes.

Jang: Are you also working on the new dye project? (Yes.) I’ve been working on this too, but I could only come up with brown. There’re lots of cheaper herbs that can produce this color, so this is useless, right?

Giroo: Yes, you can’t use that.

Jang: But I must find it…

Giroo: That’s what I’d say…

Jang: Should we do it together?

Giroo: No. We must work separately to test more things.

They both keep trying separately, and they both fail. Then Giroo sees lady Gooksoo washing the cloths using color enhancer, and he gets an idea.

NEXT

Mojin: So, did anyone find a better dye?

Jang found one. He tells them he used ‘chok’ which is good for the body, but it must be done right away, because otherwise, the color will change. Mojin feels it’s impractical.

Then Giroo tells them they can use that same material ‘chok,’ mixed with the color enhancer. He shows them how to do it for the color to remain, and everyone’s amazed. He gets awarded for this new finding with one more star.

Jang is looking at all the stars that Giroo has, feeling he himself has a long way to go.

Giroo’s voice: Jang! Let’s get this over with!

NEXT

Giroo tells Mokrasu that now, he wants to do research on rice. He wants to go around the different rice farms and do a survey. Mokrasu tells him to take Jang along.

NEXT

Jang: Where should we go?

Giroo: I’m going North. You take the other road.

Jang: Can’t we go together?

Giroo: It’s better to research more farms so we can compare them later.

Jang: Yes. But… have you been upset at me lately?

Giroo: Not really.

NEXT

A guard tells Sochoong that he checked the records about the fugitive slaves, but he couldn’t find any information about the 4 young slaves who died. Sochoong learns that Kim Saheum was in charge of the interrogation back then.

Sunhwa decides to go see Kim Saheum.

NEXT

While Jang was researching the different rice farms, he meets the old lady he helped recently. So other farmers come to him, insisting that he must receive a reward for building brick-stoves. But then, they ask him for his ID plaque, and they find out that it is false. So they arrest him.

Kim Saheum watches Jang being arrested, and he recognizes him.

Saheum: (To the officer in charge) That boy you just arrested, I know him. I’ll be responsible for him so release him.

Officer: But his ID plaque…

Saheum: The king knows about this, so do not worry.

Officer: His Majesty knows?

Saheum: Yes. Thus, release him at once.

NEXT

Sunhwa learns that Jang was arrested for carrying fake ID, but that he was set free by Kim Saheum.

Sunhwa: Did you release the man carrying fake ID?

Saheum: I’m not sure… Are you talking about the guy who developed the brick-stove?

Sunhwa: Yes.

Saheum: I just released him because I felt he did a good thing.

Sunhwa: You really don’t know him?

Saheum: Well… I don’t think so.

Sunhwa: Do you remember interrogating fugitive slaves from
China ten years ago?

Saheum: I’m not sure. 10 years is a long time to remember…

NEXT

Sunhwa: (To herself.) Why would Kim Saheum release him? Why would he let a fugitive slave from
China get away? Why?

Sochoong walks in, telling him that all the fugitive slaves were captured and returned to
China. The 4 teenagers who died were not Chinese slaves. The real problem is that there are no records concerning them.

NEXT

Jang informs Mokrasu of what just happened, apologizing for the trouble. The master’s relieved that Jang was released without further incident. He tells Jang to be careful until they make him a new ID plaque.

NEXT

Jang: Why did you come here again? Didn’t you say you wouldn’t come here anymore?

Sunhwa: I’ve good news, so I came running to tell you.

Jang: Good news? What news?

Sunhwa: Finally, the king listened to my request.

Jang: Request?

Sunhwa: I don’t know the reason, but since I feel you wouldn’t leave your people behind, I’ve petitioned the king for you. I got the king’s approval to set your people free from slavery, and to work at the Palace. You’ll be in relatively high positions. The soldiers will come in the morning to escort you. We’ll go to Surabol together! Aren’t you happy?

Jang: You can’t do that! Take it back!

Sunhwa: I don’t want to. I can’t. You must come with me to the Palace.

Jang: We can’t. If that happens… Then… all of us will die!

Sunhwa: …?

Jang: I’m not… a Chinese slave. I’m… I’m… a Baekjae man!
