A music beginner's review on Penny Tai's newest album : Crazy Love 爱疯了
(btw..it sure takes time to digest and accept the different kinds of music in the album, and now i love it to bits)

u get the gist of the song :) it starts with an announcer annoucing ''and now, please welcome the nominee of the top album of the year.." and then a crowd cheering. and then typical drum beat of a typical penny-style song, and a typical opening, and of coz, typical penny song. easy to sing along. a gentle start i'd say.
It's You 就是你
yep, another typical beginning - from soft to loud the vocals get, and lots of guitar :) :yo: a catchy song, and sweet lyrics abt girl meets boy, abt jodoh. i love the accompanying vocals..so sweet and harmonious and rich in melody!
爱疯了 Crazy Love
a melancholic mood sets in. with some strange instrument as the intro, dunno wat is it. lots of piano here. in the middle, she gives a laugh, u know a tired type of laugh, like wen u r fed up of everything, and u give a very hopeless kind of laugh. urm....this song...not really my preference.
试探 Have a Try
yes, guitar, piano, drums, can't hear strings here. a slow song. urm, boleh tahan. not much to be said.
It's alright
cool drum beat for the start, and there's the saxophone. a lil bit of jazz flavour here. urm, fusion jazz according to the remarks on the cd. cool lyrics though. very good arrangment with the bass n saxophone.
Amen
dunno how this song title fits in the song. but i sure like the atmosphere and tone of the song!!!!! it's so MINOR, and the piano is so good. it's a song that pulls certain chords of the heart. it's quiet with the piano and occasional beats of the drum, and some bass accompanied by the flute in the middle of the song. mixed and arranged well. her vocals suit the song well. it ends with a strong piano solo.
之间 Between
i suka betul this song, though it's another song with a minor and melancholic tone. accompanied with a male vocal, suits the theme of the song very well. it has a good climax. impressed that penny can write such a soulful piece.
好好地过 Live Well
this is jazzy. not bad. a simple jazz but a good try. starts with the drummer and his drum sticks - 1,2; 1,2 ...and lovely piano! :) mm..... bassy.... clean electric guitar sound. ooo...the arrangement is wonderful!
好想 Eager To
a sweet love song. nice one. easy to hum along too. and sweet lyrics.
okie, a typical love song.

starts off with the voices of kids playing in the background. talking abt the innocence of childhood days that r so far away now. so-so. guitar as the lead, with percussions. a bit similar to her song, 1999.
往前飞 Flying Ahead
ada harmonica kat sini. one of my favs. i used to dislike harmonica in songs, coz just doesn't seem to reali fit, and makes the song quite...urm, less modern. it's ok to be old-fashioned, but too much of it kills the song. the harmonica for this song instead brings out the theme of the song, not irritating, and a good electric guitar solo. muahaha..ada piano kat sini jugak. and not too bad the lyrics. real.
花盼 Long for "blossom"
penny's try on writing poem-like lyrics. and yep, there's a string ensemble for this song. arranged by Terence Teo (u can see many of his arrangements in YZ's songs too). hmm..was there some classical chinese instrument there? Seems like the zither or pipa. sounds more like pipa though. can't reali differentiate btw those two. urm, a bit too strong on the vocal side though. nice effort for trying to blend chinese n modern :)
玩疯了Gone Bad
it's 6 minutes of jamming on the drums and guitars and ... :rock and roll: :yo: haven't really took time to seriously listen to it yet ^_^
overall, one remarkable thing noted is that more piano is used for this album. and a good try on different styles on music.
done :applause: worth buying original ^_^
there's so much to learn abt music and how a song is produced. given a chance, i'd love to learn more! |
