The Answer To Life, The Universe, And Everything

Here ya go, Tiller!  Figure this one out!

"A clear conscience is usually a sign of a bad memory." Steven Wright

I grew up with this game called "42" then, later on, I bought a tin of double-six dominoes and read about the games in th little instruction packet, and I found that they really call this game "Texas 42" or "Texas four-hand dominoes". It is a lot like spades or rook, only with dominoes. Any of you who know how to play can feel free to join my blog ring called Texas 42 players. My parents dated through this game. They played with their parents! A great game of strategy. Should any of you want to know how to play, go out and buy some double-six dominoes, and read the instructions. If the tin don't come with them, ask me!

This poem attempts to mirror a bit of the strategy of the game. At first glance, the game might seem easy or hard, fun, or boring to play, much like the reading of this poem, but the more you study it, the more the strategy pops out. Read it again and see what you can see.

The poem has 42 lines, and if you read the first letters starting at the bottom of the poem, it spells out FORTY TWO 42, and it has a rhyme scheme (even if it is not a very well done one.  it is a poem still in progress)

Texas Style Dominoes

One game I often play

With a few other friends of mine

To pass along a longer day

Yes, it steals away the time!

Texas Forty-two, it's called

Rules are simple too

Only play a hand or two, that's all

For me to teach you Forty-two!

2 people may the partner claim

42 is the name of the game!

One first rule every man should know:

With a hand, grab three, and a hand grab four

To give you seven dominoes

You won't need less, you won't need more.

To quote my Daddy, and his before

Right down to the last hand of tricks

"Only idiots bid a score:

Fives without the double and six!"

2 people may the partner claim

42 is the name of the game!

On the perk is a coffee pot

With some blackness, bad and strong.

To sharpen the mind a little (or a lot)

Yes, to encourage fun and laughter long!

To start the rules, there's seven tricks

Rate them by numbers in a suit and count, then call,

On the dominoes you picked

Forty-two points in all

2 people may the partner claim

42 is the name of the game!

On the shaker's left , the first bidding falls

With thirty being the least to begin,

The highest bidder wins trumps to call.

Yet only the bidder must end with the win

To follow suit (the heaviest side)

Really is how the game is done

Only remember, you're on your partner's side

For when All is spelled, that team has won

2 people may the partner claim

42 is the name of the game!

That sounds like quite a game, I'm guessing that the name is a reference to The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.

@TheUnmaskedAvenger -

no, 42 is actually the name of the game, or Texas 42, or "Texas four-hand" as it is called in most instructions that come with the double six dominoes.

I think Iwrote that wrong or you misunderstood

What I meant was write a list of charactaristics of your christain walk and pray about the things that are not so good and ask God to help you correct them
And i meant that by doing that it might really be beneficial in improving your walk with God

Does that clarify things or am i still not understanding?

@ashay24w - Ah, I see, adjectives like weak or strong or hypocritical (sp?)?  but I would still put those other two in there as well.  thanks for clarifying.

Thank You!

You know, I've never really played dominoes...only stacked them in patterns and watched them knock each other over.  Thank you for your comment about my brother.  It's hard when it's unexpected like that, but the shock is wearing off now and I know where he's at!

Hope you and Mrs. Cowboy have a great Valentine's Day!

Actually ,I meant the name of the post, but it never occurs to me to specify such things.

I immediately recongnized the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy by the title, but its obviously a game of dominoes. I didn't quite get the message the first time I read it, I'll read it over a few more times.

@TheUnmaskedAvenger -

yes, in that case, it is a reference to Hitchiker's guide to the Galaxy.  I still think that the game of 42 answers all questions to life the universe and everything, no matter what those questions are...:)

Never heard of Texas 42, but I sure played my share of Rook!!! In the mountains they have fund raisers for the fire departments and they have Rook tournaments. Hard core!!!

Gene does not know how to play but next time we go up to see our friends we are going to teach him!!! I will need a refresher its been a lot of years since I have played too!!!

@firefighterswife - believe it or not, I have never played Rook!  My friends tell me it is much like 42, therefore I used it.  the rules, I'm told, are slightly different, but I think they are mainly alike.

I have to say that no matter how hard I try, 42 is a mystery to me. My folks played it a lot and tried to teach me, but I just couldn't get it! Maybe it's time to try learning again...

Great poem!
