YO YO,
Starting on the bottom of page 34 "In brickworld, the focus often becomes getting people to believe the right things so they can be "in." Knowledge is a great thing but it is only half of the puzzle. Just like faith without actions is dead (look that up in your bible). I have heard a lot of people say I want more deep teaching - I love teachings that get me thinking or where i learn something new. Do you think the problem with American churches is that we don't know enough about our faith or we aren't living what we do know and what Jesus was about???
Here is a quote to chew on: "We (christians) have done a great job of making converts (or people that believe the same things we do) but we have done a terrible job of making DISCIPLES of Christ (people that follow Jesus)." How does that sit with you? How can we improve on this problem?
Bottom of page 35 - define JOY - what is it? What isn't it?
define PEACE - what is it? What isn't it
Page 42-43 talks about something i call "SELECTIVITY" Rob says, "..sometimes when i hear people quote the Bible, I just want to throw up." Me too Rob me too. "SELECTIVITY" i define as: when someone pulls a verse out of context to prove a point that they have. For instance, those that say you can't have a tattoo because the bible says so in the O.T. the only thing is that right before that verse in LEV 19 it says don't cut the hair on the sides of your head or trim the corners of your beard....so why don't we still follow that. They select the verses they want to prove a point they have. We can't just select certain verses we like and diregard the ones we don't like. Plenty of christians and denominations are built on selectivity. Trust me, there are plenty of verses that i don't understand that i wish i could just white out - it would be a lot easier. So what do you think of SELECTIVITY - what are other examples like the tattoo verse that you have heard? What do we do with the tough verses that rob talks about (like jericho)????
page 44 "somebody recently told me, "as long as you teach the Bible, i have no problem with you." What the person is really saying is as long as you teach the version of the Bible, I'll have no problem with you."
So should we decipher the Bible alone if it is such a tough but important book to understand? What would it look like to read it alone, talk about it in community, research together, pray together about the text. The bible is like a meal, everyone at the table is eating the same meal but it taste different to each one of us because we have different past and different experiences. LET'S EAT TOGETHER.

p.s. Superbowl party this sunday invite friends $2 and feb 19th we are going to the David Crowder concert tickets are $26....much love

Hey Group,
The reading is on pgs 20-35. Comment on anthing you are thinking through, learning, wrestling with. Here are some of my observations and you can feed off those as well.

Recap on what you think about the bricks vs. springs

How does this phrase sit with you: God is bigger than any religion. God is bigger than the christian fatih. What does that mean? (on pg 27)

We talk a lot about defending the christian faith. I don' t know about you but if i am talking with someone that believes the oppossite of me that person usually doesn't change there whole belief system because i am a good debator. I heard a qoute the other day "maybe if protestants (christians) protested less and followed Jesus more the world would be different." I am not saying we shouldn't stand up for things but has christianity something we defend or something we live?

Jesus didn't get into too many debates with the pharisees even though they wanted to; he showed them a new way of living outside of there man made laws and religion. What does it look like for us to live out our faith instead of defending it? or just being known as someone who avoids certain things?

pg 28 "jesus invites everyone to jump" We should be inviting people to experience the fullest life and let them get a taste of jesus. What is the good news? How can we invite people into this life?

MORE TO COME ON pages 30 -35
