| CRISIS
James and I went out to dinner tonight and before driving home went to aide a fellow Mac user with his new equiptment (I was going to stay out of the way, not to help).
This friend was in a frienzy, sweating drops the size of Texas mosquitos and his hair was completely gone when we got there. Ahh, someone else that can't deal with too many computer problems....I felt releived that I'm not the only person that gets frustrated with the damn things.
Several hours passed and there were 3 guys hovering around the big Mac and the other equiptment, working on the problem and when we left it still wasn't resolved. Although they did get a carrot on a string, it was fixed and got unfixed in a hurry! Hey, maybe the frustration with "not knowing" or not "being able to make it" isn't something I invented. Maybe I'm not the Lone Ranger! It was good for me to see that other people get to the end of their ropes and feel like crying, cussing or smashing something. Nothing gets me there faster than computers! That's a good time to go kill snails. grin
| BEAT THE CLOCK
I had a stressful evening trying to purchase airline tickets to Reno, Nevada. They've been running at $144. for months now so I've been lulling around waiting for a "deal". I decided I had better just pay the price and seal the deal tonight.
I checked with all of my usual online haunts and as usual, the first was the best rate. I noticed the prices creeping up as I moved from one site to the next. As the clock was ticking so were the prices! By the time I got back to the first site the fare had gone up to $196. All of the sale seats were sold out.
I went ahead and paid the extra to fly out of our local airport on a commuter. James won't have the 4 hour drop off and pick up time to take me to San Diego. He never complains when I do leave out of San Diego but the fact that he started James' World Airlines and speaks in plane language(pun) gives me reason to be a little concerned about the time he spends at airports.
| GOOD CONNECTIONS
What a week! I got a new computer, new laptop and a PalmPilot all in less than seven days. I'm so well connected that I'm considering wearing an aluminium foil hat to protect my head.
Just before all of my recent acqusitions I thought "Post-Its" were high tech. I haven't lost my facination with them but they have moved down a notch on my current list of "noteworthy inventions".
I was feeling so with the times today that I bought some phyto-nutrients (aka green foods). They're capsules filled with a very fine dust of what tastes and smells like horse food. Packed with more than all the essential vitamins and minerals necessary to support an active body. They're for us folks that couldn't possibly eat all the green leafies recommended in the food pyramid. I felt if I was ever going to be able to learn how to use all the wonderful equiptment I now possess I had better get some brain food in me.
I'm still struggling with programming my cell phone, setting an alarm clock, which remote control controls what and learning how to use an electric toothbrush, I need brain food and some chocolate.
| Positive v/s Negative
I was thinking about negative input today and had the thought that there are people who are driven by it. The more negative the input the more motivated they become. From "you're an idiot, you'll never learn to do ____, you're a failure" comes "oh yeah? watch me....I'll be the best!".It works for some people but I typically go the other way, "Ok, you're the expert, I'll find something else to do". And all that I get from their communication is that they are negative and destructive assholes.
In my experience as a student and a teacher, I find that positive reinforcement moves people to greater accomplishments....the old "you can do it!! Go girl!". Finding the good and praising it but not passing over the areas that could use more work and gently giving instruction and guidance is more my way of doing things. Probably because that is the best environment for me to learn something new.
I pictured a car battery needing both positive and negative to become fully charged.
| SONGSTRESS
Things became more complicated today. I received my new laptop. As though one new computer wasn't a big enough headache now I have another, double trouble. Fortunately, James took care of the laptop today so I didn't have to think about it. The Caped Crusader strikes again, saving the fair maiden in distress! MY HERO!! bats eyelashes
I get a brain cloud when it comes to these damn things. I tried to distract myself from all of the current problems with missing programs and files, etc. by keeping good music going while I was near the computer. It helped to keep a song in my heart while my head was spinning with computer problems. I think I'll just keep singing until it's all worked out. Hence the term song-stress. Smile.
