| Disney is killing rock musicAs asinine and droll as the local Top 40 station is, I’m finding the
Disney Channel to be the largest threat to rock music today. The
biggest hits among kids lately have been movies and series revolving
around music and musicians, starting with “High School Musical” and now
with “Jonas Brothers” and “Camp Rock.”
The biggest offender is “Camp Rock.” Imagine the movie “School of
Rock” except replace the musical influences of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and
Black Sabbath with Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. It’s not rock
music! It should be called “Pop Camp.” Or “Camp with Pop.” Or
“Incidental and background distorted electric guitars overshadowed by
pop vocals Camp.” Kids who watch “Camp Rock” will think this is rock
music! It’s not! Don’t believe the lies! click for examples |

| Male nudity in HollywoodThe LA Times ran an article about male nudity in Hollywood, prompted by the release of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which has about 3-4 instances of penis onscreen, each about 250ms in length (unfortunate word choice). Male nudity isn't necessarily new, but it does seem like it's getting to be more common.
When I saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" every time there was male nudity the entire theater erupted in groans of distress. Unlike female nudity, no one wants to see men's privates. Whereas female genitalia is almost exclusively used in films to titillate, male genitalia is used to convey an aspect of sex that is rarely touched upon in film: vulnerability.
I think the dichotomy of boobs=sex and penis=vulnerability is an indication of the stereotypical gender roles in our society - women being sex objects and men being strong and protectors. Of course, it's also an indication that men like to see women's boobs and women could care less about penises.
I should note there are exceptions to the rule for female nudity, like in "Babel," where it was used to show vulnerability and desperation.
I should also note that the best male nude scene is in "Eastern Promises" with Viggo Mortensen. Just awesome. |
