in fact, i spent most of the day playing poker. when i realized that the weekly big deal tourney ($300 buy-in) was at 2pm EST, i went errand-running for popo beforehand with enough time for me to enter. i told popo that i would be "using my computer" for the rest of the afternoon.
253 people entered; the prize pool was a guaranteed $80,000. it was definitely the most tedious tourney that i have ever played as people generally play better when the stakes are higher. after we reached 50+ players left (top 40 pay), i never left the top 10. i was chiplead going in to the final table, but did drop to 3rd at some point during 1.5+ hours of final table play. i actually don't have much to say about my play except to say that at 7 hours, it was quite the grind. the most important thing is that i've become very good about not making bad calls. lance watched the entire final table online (last time i reached final table, he told me to let him know the next time around). his only comment was that i am too meek in reraising heads up, which i totally agree with. otherwise, he said my heads up play was quite good--esp how patient i was in waiting to make moves. at our final break, i had 150k+ chips to the other guy's 400k+. the mistake that some people make here is feeling rushed to take the lead. in fact, i think that's what became of the other guy--as i recouped the chiplead, winning something like 4 hands in a row.
the hands that took them out: 3rd place it was my KK on the button against SB's AKo. head's up: i had QJo on the button. not sure if i've ever mentioned it, but QJ is my very favorite hand. i live and die by that hand (well, within reason). anyway, with my favorite hand, i made it 4xbb (40k) to go. other guy made it an additional 70k to see the flop. flop came 9J5; he pushed with AK and i called. he never improved (i made 2 pair at the river). we had gone head's up one time before (AK vs AJ) where i thought i had the game already, so my reaction to this one was "it's really over?"
every place in the top 10 paid out >$1k. top 5 reached $5k. 3rd was $8k, 2nd $13k and for 1st i won $20k. yes, it is the most money i have ever won at poker. i have to admit tho, by the time we got to $13k, i just wanted the title. i'll take the money too of course. |
