Name: Allison
Birthday: 9/21/1983
Gender: Female

Interests: I enjoy music (and sometimes I attempt to make it with piano, guitar or my voice), dancing (mostly ballet and modern dance, but sometimes other things--swing dancing is fun), having good discussions or just hanging out with friends, helping out at church, Habitat for Humanity, trying to be artistic and creative, reading a good book, road trips, things with stripes...
Expertise: I have a bachelor's in psychology and Spanish, and I'm currently studying linguistics (languages) (actually, I've started Greek at seminary now--yay!) and I'm tutoring--but look at the bottom of the page if you want to see something fun (my cute virtual hamster--she'll run in her wheel if you want)... My hair's curly now, but most of you probably already know that by now.

I'm engaged!!

Yep, it's true.  I know I've been bad about keeping in touch and haven't been on Xanga for forever, so if anyone actually still reads this and it catches you completely by surprise, I apologize.  Of course, I was pretty surprised, too, so I can't be too apologetic.  :)

Anyway, I'm engaged to a guy named Eric, and he's amazing, and if you want more details, you'll just have to ask me 'cause I really don't know if anyone's even going to read this.  :)

No, I don't know yet when we're getting married.  You're more than welcome to give your input, but it might just add to the stress of trying to get it all planned.  :)  Hehe.  Honestly, I'm excited about it.  It'll be fun.  Just don't have a date yet or any other plans really figured out.

I hope you're all doing well!!  I'll try to give more updates soon if anyone replies!  :)

a few summer highlights

(i.e. highlights of a few summers)

9 years ago today...

I had completed my first overseas experience, and at a much younger age than expected.  Following my freshman year of high school, I was able to go to Austria, where our ballet company had been invited to perform as part of a summer arts festival.  My family didn’t have money for things like going to other countries, and I was too young to travel that far away without my parents, so my parents had initially said that I couldn’t go.  I had accepted that without much surprise or argument.  However, somehow, it ended up working out, and they changed their minds later to say I could go, and then my grandma donated almost all of the money I needed for the trip (and she wasn’t a rich lady).

8 years ago today...

One of the stories I sent in had been selected and published in Reader’s Digest’s “Life in These United States”, and I was awarded $400 for the submission.  This allowed me to take the trip I had wanted to visit my best friend who lived in Ohio.  Somehow we managed to see each other about once a year, even though we hadn’t lived in the same state since 6th grade.  (A few years later, I would even be in her wedding.)

5 years ago today...

I had returned from my summer mission trips to Argentina and Mexico.  What great experiences!  It was the third (and final) consecutive year of building houses in Juarez, Mexico with a team from Ohio.  It was also my first time doing a missions/study experience farther away, with the trip to Argentina with a college group.  It’s amazing how God paves a way for me to do things when I for some reason don’t think He will.  I had also completed my freshman year of college and was, I hope, becoming slightly more responsible and mature.  I was double-majoring and was involved with multiple activities on campus and in the community.

2 years ago today...

I had just started classes at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics.  I had recently moved to Grand Prairie and taken up residence in my very own (well, rented) 1-bedroom apartment.  I had graduated from college and was learning for the first time what it was like to be responsible to pay multiple bills every month.  I was living off of money I had inherited following my grandma’s death a year earlier, along with some support from my parents, while I took classes full-time—and I mean full time.

Today...

I live in Dallas and am working two to three part-time jobs in an attempt to pay my tuition and bills as I go as a part-time seminary student.  I am gradually learning how to communicate better in my interactions with guys and with friends in general.  Somehow I’ve managed to keep up with Spanish well enough that I am now given labels like “bilingual” and “translator”.  How crazy is that??  Perhaps someday I’ll recognize how God always provides in my life, and I’ll learn not to worry about finances, future plans, and anything else.

And God said...

And God said, "You can't do it on your own.  Quit trying."

*Sigh.*  Quit stressing, Allison.  Calm down.  Ask for help when you need it.  Silly little Allison, stressing and running around like crazy to try to be "responsible" and take care of everything on her own.  ...and yet the efforts still fail.

We are made to depend on one another.

I don't have time to write more now 'cause I'm leaving for Mexico in less than 9 hours, and I still have so much to pack--eek!  It would be nice if I got to sleep a decent amount before I leave, too.

(Hooray for getting to go translate for a youth group in Mexico for a week!  That's a different story...  It's amazing how many things can fall into place at the last minute.  ...and yet I'm still stressing...)

A few pictures of spring

Since I couldn't keep the colorful photo for my background and still have legible text, I decided to post a few spring pics (and make one of my pics monotone for the background).

The following four pics are from campus a few weeks ago.

100_0271sm2

The next three are from the botanical gardens in Fort Worth a couple of weeks ago.

I call this one "Self-Portait".  This is the digital camera (or at least mirror-image of it) that I got for Christmas, enabling me to take all these pics!  :)

If I have time, I'm going to post on something different later...  (so all of you who are reading this the moment it's published and eagerly soaking up every word can wait in tension to see if I indeed follow through with that semi-promse)  :)

*Okay.  I was able to fix it so you really can see the pictures--and it was much easier than the old way.  :)

I feel famous!

Hey!  If you have a minute, go to this link soon: http://news.yahoo.com/you-witness-news

In the middle, on the part with pictures that says "You Witness Photos", click on "More Photos" and scroll through to look at the ones from Tuesday, March 20th.  Let me know if you see anything fun!  :)

By the way, let me know if this post is entirely too hard to read with the new background.

*Edit: I think you can actually click on this direct link instead of scrolling through the pictures: http://news.yahoo.com/photo/070320/photos_ywitness/1a66f33906e4c6a66b5d023ed8e42cf1

Let me know if the links don't work.
